Added idol may indicate new Day of the Tentacle release(s) photo

Get ready to be really excited Day of the Tentacle fans.

Take a close look at the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition snapshot in the header image. The Tentacle idol featured in the center shouldn’t exist. It wasn’t included in the original PC release of the title (something anyone can easily check by fiddling with the visual toggle). Interestingly, the Tentacle idol -- which we can only assume is the dreaded Purple Tentacle -- is replacing two other LucasArts characters: Sam and Max.

What does this mean? There’s a couple of likely avenues to explore: LucasArts is hinting at a new release of either Maniac Mansion or Day of the Tentacle or Telltale Games (creators of the episodic Sam & Max series) is indeed working on an episodic series revolving around Day of the Tentacle.

During E3 2009, Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors told VideoGamer that a Day of the Tentacle series was feasible: “I would say feasible is a good word,” he said before adding, “To me I always think of the big three as, and maybe it’s just because of when I was playing and when I was first starting at LucasArts, I always think of Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island as the big three franchises. Having access to Steve and access to Dave Grossman and everything else … I really love Day of the Tentacle.”

I asked LucasArts about my curious find last night. A representative told me this morning via e-mail, “I think we’d like to keep some easter eggs and their meanings mysterious for now.”

Mysterious indeed. Either way, it seems almost inevitable that we’ll get another Day of the Tentacle release. Now, if that’s an HD update or an episodic series is something that neither TellTale nor LucasArts is willing to tell us about just yet.

But we’ll remember the little guy up top and poke around a bit more.

[Update: Telltale is telling us this has nothing to do with a Day of the Tentacle episodic series.]

What about copyright issues? Does LucasArts retain any rights over Sam & Max?

Careful eyes will find the addition of a certain Sr. Calavera as well.

Er, I should probably have mentioned not in this picture, but he's in the game.

@AllHailShake
I think Steve Purcell wouldn't care if he handed it off to Lucas again: it just means more money for him. Either way, they still "owe him" that canceled game. I wouldn't count it out, if Adventure games are making as big a comeback as they are now.

@Valter

Day of the Tentacle has nothing to do with TellTale games fyi.

DoubleFine or bust, LucasArts!

I think that Lucasarts simply no longer has the rights for Sam & Max...

There was also a Manny Calavera face hidden in the game and there is NO way we'll ever get a Grim Fandango 2!

Man LucasArts has seen the light...

Stop releasing shitty New IPs and start remastering the Back Catalogue that made them a beloved developer in the Early 90s.

Lucasarts doesn't have the rights to Sam & Max anymore, BUT they have dealings with Telltale, to the point where Telltale is making the new Monkey Island games. I'd expect a Hit the Road remake in HD to arrive round about the same time as Sam and Max Season Three.

I noticed the idol has changed and thought about whether there might be a Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle remake in the pipeline, but hasn't it been stated pretty clearly that any future remakes depend on Monkey Island sales? Also, if another something was in the works it would make sense that Maniac Mansion would be first, so one would assume they'd have used a tentacle without hands (probably).

It's possible that the idol was replaced simply because they no longer own the Sam and Max property. I don't think, given the cross marketing and communication between Telltale and Lucasarts that there would have been a problem, but maybe some legal guy suggested it be replaced.

Oh and I wouldn't like Telltale to get this property. More power to them for putting the genre back in the spotlight but things are feeling a little samey by now and I would like to see someone else get a crack at these games.

I would love to see a remake of Maniac Mansion or Day Of The Tentacle as they are two games that I somehow missed out on back in the day and I have always regretted doing so.

@Monodi Nah, that's how it looked like before! Manny is right outside LeChuck's ship!

Maniac Mansion first! Then DOTT! Re-do the originals before you bore me to death with the episodic content.

Im very excited. TellTale is doing some very interesting stuff. I loved the new Monkey Island.

I would love to see a new Grim Fandango, but Grim Fandango ended like it should and I would be ok with a Grim Fandango release on STEAM (it has a lot of compatibility problems with the new O.S.).

Theres also Manny's face hidden in the background of LeChuck's volcano hideout. I doubt it means they put these easter eggs in as a way of saying they are working on new games, it's possible of course but it seems a bit like jumping the gun.

Calm down, it's just probably an easter eggs.
