Adam Sessler weighs in on the Left 4 Dead 2 whiners photo

First off, thanks to Adam Sessler for giving us props in regards to dropping the rumortoid bomb that Left 4 Dead 2 was going to be announced at E3. Funny how almost no one believed us. Everyone must have thought we were crazy. So crazy.

Anyway, on the latest Sessler's Soapbox, Adam had a few things to say about all the people enraged over how Valve has "betrayed" them by making Left 4 Dead 2. The original Left 4 Dead did great in terms of sales, so it was a no-brainer that Valve would want to make a sequel. And as we know, the sequel is going to add a lot of new features that should really set it apart from the original.

We've expressed the same feelings as Adam has on the issue and agree with everything he had to say here. Valve -- like all the other game companies -- is a business, and they don't owe us anything. Check out what The Sess had to say after the break.

Seriously. All you whiners could be doing better things with your time ... like making nude patches for Left 4 Dead!

I think the basis of the argument is this:

We want it for free because we don't want to pay for something that's just like what we've got already.

God forbid the Madden crowd ever wakes up and starts throwing a bitchfit like this...

I can't explain why I feel so perturbed about LFD2. There's no rationality to it, really; the only one I can think of is that long-time Valve patrons are accustomed to getting their games really slowly. Since we're getting a sequel one year later from the original release, it makes us nervous, because it's different.

I guess it's because we assume a correlation between the inherent quality of Valve's productions and time it takes to produce them. This is, of course, nonsense.

Anyway, we're really nervous that Valve's fucking up. We really love our Valve. It's kind of like how a bad parent reacts to a rebellious child. We want our little Valve to be perfect, because in all seriousness, to people who've played Valve's games since half-life (IMO the greatest single-player game EVER, even still) Valve is sacred. We worship it.

We just don't want our hearts broken. So, please Valve, don't use us.

Both sides are a little too heated when it comes to this issue. Most people who voice their concern over L4D2 do it quite aggressively, making demands and whatnot, instead of simply stating a concise point.

Then you have the crowd that hates on the people complaining, offering up other pointless arguments such as "they owe you nothing." That's just something you picked up off some other forum and decided it was a "mature" thing to say. It doesn't add anything to the proceedings. Furthermore, I'll bet at least half of those same people will turn around, and complain about EA releasing a new sports game every year. Oh, and there's the "just decide with your dollar" crowd. Well, no shit.

We are fans, we've been supporting Valve a long time now, and if that doesn't mean they "owe" us, then maybe at the very least it's in their best interest to keep the fans happy?

The best way would be to meet somewhere in the middle. You can say what you will about the content of the game, but a while ago, when a developer released a game soon after the original, with a new campaign, a couple new modes of play and weapon/unit class, they called it an expansion. They felt it wouldn't be right to charge full price for a game that only took half, if not a third of the amount of time the original did.

So we have one crowd that wants Valve/EA to realize that they don't think what they're doing is right. The other believes that as long as the released product is of equal quality to other Valve releases, the length of the development cycle isn't a factor. I see where both sides are coming from. I just wish they'd do it more civilly.

I don't get either side of this argument...
I think the point is left 4 dead 2 with all the new things bringing to the table is fantastic and people want to buy it but also they want DLC and support to the first game which valve said they would provide and will still provide.
SO WHY IS ANYONE EVEN COMPLAINING! Were getting both! Valve are infallible anyway.

@ too many to mention, those of you who are anti-anti L4D2

Most of us wouldn't have purchased the game in the first place if we knew there was going to be a new and improved version one YEAR later. The lot of that purchased L4D were unsatisfied with the multiplayer (and the campaigns are not enough to justify that). The multiplayer issues are still prevalent.

In any case, we do feel entitled because anyone who followed the L4D blog, way back when to where they released the character re-design (that also pissed off most of its fanbase), we were promised more DLC. Out of all the work on L4D we got one new map. One half-assed survival map. The rest were just "unlocked".

I'm still so torn up about Valve, on one hand they have TF2 which continues to make me proud to be a gamer. Then this L4D issue comes along, then they become the Army's bitch by releasing AA3.
Needless to say, I'm glad Impulse is around now.

I stand on the line for this one. I hate the attitude of the whiny anti-sequel, but I see the justifications behind it. On the other side I think we will all have to wait at what the game is actually going to contain before judging its worth and right to be a sequel.

Best of lucks to Valve on this one.
