Mass Effect 2 had a sort of Online Pass with the Cerberus Network, where you got a number of early DLC packs for free if you had purchased the game new. Otherwise, they were $10. I think that this news could actually be pointing to something more along those lines.
Of course, there could also be the much-rumored multiplayer, but I personally hope it's the former. The former I believe is how online passes should be done. You get a few extra, mostly superflous DLC bits.

So, now there IS multiplayer, even though Bioware originally said Mass Effect 3 would be a "single-player" game? Well, that definitely gives me high hopes for a not-tacked-on multiplayer experience.
I really doubt that ME3 is going to have any sort of multiplayer... I'm assuming this online pass is going to lock off DLC for the game for those without the code.
I hope to god that online pass is something like the Cerberus Network. If there is one game coming out that doesn't need multiplayer of any kind its Mass Effect 3

C'mon, we all know ME3 is just gonna be a re-skinned Gears of War 3. It's all about cover-based third person shooters and 'gritty' 'realistic' first person shooters now, no one wants to play RPGs where you can't go online and own some noobs while calling them various childish names....

For those too lazy to look at the source. It clearly says online MULTIPLAYER pass. It's right there at the bottom.
I'm definitely not gonna say that it's not multiplayer, but it is from an ad in a South African magazine. It could have been a misunderstanding of whoever was drafting the ad copy, and they may have misunderstood what the"online pass" was gonna be for, and assumed it was for Multiplayer.
I mean, it's already a mistake that the add even ran with this bit of info prior to any official announcement, so it's not unlikely that the copy itself isn't fully accurate.

Enough with the multiplayer! Mass effect 1 and 2 were great without it, is it really necessary? At least skyrim hasn't jumped on this bandwagon. Shit, me3 could possibly already be in our consoles if not for this online mode..not that these next few months need any more great games, just sayin..
I had the collector's edition preordered, but I'm thinking about cancelling and just buying the game used instead. I'm never going to want to play multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, so what am I supposed to do with a online pass code that I have no intention of redeeming?

Unlikely since Bioware have said they were looking at multiplayer and they are currently working on an MMO. Makes sense to that there will be multiplayer.

Agreed with @MyCoolWhiteLies. Mass Effect 2 already had this, so this isn't a big surprise, and also not representative of possible multiplayer.

Not sure what you mean by this. You get a free server with a new game purchase, or something? Even if you hate online passes with all your heart, this argument doesn't hold water. It's like yelling at the phone company because you bought a phone and it doesn't come with phone service. What you BOUGHT is in that package, not the stuff on the other end.

Meh. Honestly, chances are I'll pirate it now because of the whole Origin thing, and then buy it later when I get an Xbox 360.
Mass Effect 2 was like a western Kingdom Hearts for me.
Nice story, but the gameplay was totally absent, just a duck and cover shooter with chocolate/vanilla choice and relationship sprinkles.
Feels incredibly shallow next to Elder Scrolls and Deus Ex, really.
I played it only for story and the characters weren't even up to par with other Bioware efforts, none of the charm KOTOR or even DA:O had.
And naturally, ME3 comes with some kind of loyalty tax.
Oh well, no more of this. Bioware seems intent on continuing down this path and as a result, they've lost a fan. Well, they lost me well before this, I just checked in to see if their newer stuff was up to snuff.
Its not. I'll just keep warm memories of when Bioware games were good, which ironically was when their games were licensed products. I usually hate that.

I've read this is the last article. It's not about having to take time to put in a code, it's about content being locked because someone doesn't feel like buying the game new on first day.
But that doesn't matter because people are going to complain regardless but still buy the games these publishers put out with these passes. If these things actually bothered people then they shouldn't buy the games at all.

This is bad for 2 obvious reason.
1: the obvious continuing trend of punishing people for buying a legal product in a legal way.
2: a dedicated online multiplayer pass? They're making the game more shooter centric? Fuck. I want my RPG back bioware. If I wanted to go play a shooter I'd go play a real one.

I'm probably one of the biggest Mass Effect fans out there, and this doesn't surprise me in the least. I think we all knew well and good that EA was going to do this. I had only hoped it would be cheaper than the Cerberus Network pass.

Mass Effect 2 already did the silly used games hate with the Cerberus pack, so unless this turns out to really be a tacked on multiplayer mode it's probably going to be the same thing.
On another note, its funny how many people cry out for a multiplayer mode when there's no need for one (Skyrim forums), and then a larger number of people express hate when there is a multiplayer mode, as with this. I personally don't want others screwing with my RPG experience.

I'm sure someone said it before me but the online pass is probably to lock the DLC when a person buys a used copy of the game. It's EA. They've been a pile of shit for the longest time. So has Activision and Sony doing the same should be no surprise. When the Sega's and Konami's and the Capco...oh fuck me...scratch that last one...
