Actual good games are coming to the Wii Virtual Console photo

One of the best Super Nintendo games ever, Super Mario Kart, will be hitting the Virtual Console this Monday. The classic racing game will cost you 800 Wii points.

Later this holiday season, we can expect a couple of more classics to hit the Virtual Console store. First up will be Pilotwings for the SNES and towards the end of the year, Super Smash Bros 64 will also finally be available.

So yeah, good games! Not to say that everything as of late has been crap, but it's annoying that Nintendo takes their sweet time to release the games people are dying for. Anyone excited for any of these upcoming re-releases?

I appreciate what the VC is doing, but I really wish it wasn't so archaic, and Wii Online didn't suck shit.

Seriously, Smash Brothers 64 ONLINE? ONLINE?! I would die with a Wii-mote in my hand. The PSN is just as guilty however, releasing "PSOne Classics" with zero multiplayer support: I'm looking at you, SF Alpha games.

I agree with magnalon, these games on VC or PSN at least need to have some extra content instead of paying again for the same product that we bought already and it's much more worth it.

So anyone else remember Chad's list of games that needed to come out this year? He was right on the money with that. Cept for Uniracers.

Ya online play would be nice. I can only play street fighter against the computer so many times.

Mario Kart really hasn't aged well. Especially after Mario Kart 64.

There are no extra features because I suspect these companies would MUCH rather love to charge you for the same game again with extra content(ie simply network play that most is standard in most emulators these days) next gen.

VC is amazing. Needs Pilotwings 64 though. That'll probably come just before Pilotwings Wii though.

This is too little too late I'm afraid. I feel like most have lost interest in the VC at this point.

@Magnalon

The thing is that with these services, they're not meant to provide any enhancements to the games -- Just let you get them if you didn't before. Xbox Originals were the same way -- If you downloaded Halo to your 360, it didn't magically give you online play. It's all emulation, to let you play the games EXACTLY as they were originally released.

For new, online stuff, we have WiiWare, PSN Games, and the Xbox Live Arcade. All the older game downloads are actually supposed to be like this.

The original Smash Bros was never really a good game, it was just a great concept that was never done before. If you play it now, you can see how much it pales in comparison to Melee and Brawl. It was staggering how much better the game got after a simple 2 years.

I just want some good Capcom and SNK fighters released on Virtual Arcade. I mean, Japan already got a Virtua Fighter or two. Game like Waku Waku 7, SF Alpha 2, Red Earth, Last Blade 2, Matrimelee, Garou, etc. would be perfect to put on there.

My SNES copy of Mario Kart no longer works. That does not mean I am going to buy it again however.

It took them this long to JUST release SMK on the virtual console?

come on nintendo. Virtual console has so much more potential than this.

good to see.

but sadly (depending on viewpoint) i've the heck w/VC and using HBC.

i would have paid for it 3 years ago but i'm sick of waiting. duckhunt w/wii mote = pureawesomness :)

i really don't understand why companies think they need to hold out on releasing these VC/PSOne classics. what, don't think we'll buy it? wouldn't it be better to have them available for when us gamers are reminiscing we can go...

"Hey! i can go and buy and download it since Nintendo published their WHOLE NES library on the VC.."

in a perfect world perhaps...

So it took them this long to bring the original Smash on the VC? I was expecting it to come out sometime before Brawl to help further promote and hype the game. I get they may not want to release all their good games right away so we don't get stuck with only not-so good games after awhile, but just how long will they hold back on all the good games?

Just letting you all know that.

Super Mario Kart! <3 Oh how I love(d) that game... Koopa Troopa.
I agree with both sides here. Some of these titles should have been available from the start. I realize that most of us have previously owned or played these games, but not everyone, nor has everyone saved their systems to still play these games. So, for that, the Virtual Console is pretty sweet. However, VC games should, at the very least, come with bonus content of sorts, especially for those of us buying the game for the second time. Bonus content could range from a brief history of the game, remixed soundtrack or some other cool nugget(s)...
Also, not to float my own boat here, but damn I still own at the original Super Mario Kart! Back in the day, my friend and I would play serious marathon sessions of battle mode, I'm talking upwards of 75 or so matches! Too bad Nintendo couldn't somehow, someway implement online play for VC titles. I would have loved to challenge some of you loyal robots in battle mode!

Am I excited? Not in the least.

Why? Because I won't be excited until EVERY game that ever was becomes available.

Sure PSN, I loved Tekken 2, but I'd rather be playing Poy Poy or X-Com UFO Defense.

I know XBLA, that I should love seeing that Sonic 2 is dropping in price this month. Unfortunately, I'd rather be playing Star Control or Return Fire.

VC, I know you are three years late to the party with some of these games, but I'd still rather play Yoshi's Island or Ouf of this World.

While I like the mainstream memories of games like Mario Kart, there are so many other games being swept under the wake of time.

Oh well, maybe Apple will sign a deal with Digital Elcipse to emulate every game that I really want to play because the three major console companies don't seem to get it :(

it's posts like this that keep me from being a tried and true dtoid fan. nintendo beats the other consoles hands down in the digital distribution realm. with the amazing titles already out on vc and wiiware, you're going to have a hard time defending the title to this post. do appreciate your backpedalling in paragraph 3, however. won't be buying any vc titles for a few months, wiiware has my full attention at present.

Fucking yes! The original Super Mario Kart is perhaps the best in the entire series, in my opinion. The control is such that utter mastery can be achieved, and shaving seconds off time-trials was an absolute delightful challange back in the day. Also, the battle mode is WIN. Hooray!

It seems like they should have released Super Mario Kart and Smash Bros. 64 around the time Mario Kart Wii and Brawl were being released. I don't know why they didn't. They probably would have gotten a whole lot of more downloads by capitalizing on the hype for those games.

The games I really want are Yoshi's Island, Diddy Kong Racing, and Donkey Kong 64.
