Activision won't let you cover and share other artists' songs in new Guitar Hero photo

It looks like my dream of flooding Guitar Hero World Tour's "GH Tunes" online sharing service with Christina Aguilera covers has been crushed. According to Neversoft's Brian Bright, if an infringing cover track appears online, it's Activision's duty to pull the content immediately.

"We'll be actively monitoring the site," he tells 1UP, "and, obviously, if the copyright holder complains, Activision will pull it down immediately. We can't condone people putting up covers of music. It's really there for original content."

But even if someone doesn't complain, the songs are getting the old yankeroonie anyhow, Bright clarifies. Like trolling YouTube for offending video content, I'd imagine there are going to be a lot of busy interns hitting up the "GH Tunes" store looking for my cover of Aguilera's "Fighter."

Guitar Hero World Tour offers a pretty impressive suite of music creation software, which -- as Bright points out -- should be great for musicians (and gamers) looking to create their own music. But many gamers had seen the Guitar Hero studio as a way to circumvent downloadable content; why buy Metallica's "Master of Puppets" when you can make your own? How does this, if at all, change the way you look at the service and the tools Neversoft are offering?

this is a huge blow to GHWT in my opinion. I might still buy it, but this changes everything.

With the 1200 note and 3 minute length limit that has been put into place on the song creator, You could not make a Master of Puppets in GH:WT anyway. Hopefully this inspires people to make original content.

sure, there will be some good original content.
but I'm sure that thing is going to have a ton of crap by kids who think they are l33t and just throw a bunch of random notes down to make it worse than Jordan Solo C.

If you're clever and have $12, you can circumvent any content monitoring scheme.

I'll be your genie in a bottle, Nick.

I don't see how anyone could possibly NOT expect this. Obviously, if you put up covers of songs not legally available within the game, they're going to be taken down. Duh.

Oh? So it's meant to be fucking useless?

Sounds like Beethoven might have fun with the "Custom" content, all the normals like us though might find this a bit un-nerving.

I wonder what they will do with Megaman/Mario/Contra remixes... I hope they leave it there.

What happens if you download them before the World Tour police can take them down? Can you then a) keep it and b) upload it again? If so, it will be pretty easy to perpetuate covers...

I just watched the E3 videos on making songs, and I'm blown away...mainly since I haven't been following GHWT in any way shape or form. This will 'force' creativity and originality, which I think is cool.

If you want to cover songs, mod your ps2 and play custom songs from scorehero...that's what I do :)

I wonder if this covers video game songs...

If not, expect some badass F-Zero covers from me once this is released. :D

Well that's too bad...I was really hoping to make songs for myself because I don't dig the pop industry...Does it still let you make them at home without publishing online? I'd love to put some Opeth songs in my GH...12 minutes of cracked out chords... :)

1200 notes and no covers as policy? Welp, there goes the neighborhood. Music creator moves from promising and interesting feature to maligned aftertought.

The fact that they only want custom content doesn't bother me at all. The 1200 note, 3 minute limit pisses me off though. It almost makes the game useless to me, except that the track list is more interesting than RB2.

I mean, seriously, THREE MINUTES!? You can't make a decent metal song THREE FUCKING MINUTES LONG!

I thought this would've been the big decider in the GH/RB duke out and uh...it's not so much anymore.

granted, there's so many songs I can use rockwise anyway, I'd figure I'd sneak in some of those awesome remix game music if still possible.

and yes...what about Jpop/Jrock? that doesn't count no?

This was expected. I still wish we could put vocals in. And since they have told us they'll be pulling covers, then why not? I guess it'd make the files a lot bigger?

shame. something with alot of potential is now stupidly gimped. 3 minutes a good song does not make.

Its true that you could make songs that are dlc, but thats totally missing the point; you could make songs that ARENT dlc. There are already tons of songs id kill to have on Rockband or Guitar Hero that show no signs of coming to either. Thats the main reason i gave Frets on Fire a try... although that didnt last long.
