We've already established that Activision has been acting like a bit of a cockmuncher lately, but if recent news concerning the publisher's Brütal Legend temper tantrum holds water, it's a bigger arsehole than we gave it credit for. The company is apparently threatening to sue EA over publishing rights to Double Fine's Brütal Legend, even though Activision has NO intention of publishing the game itself.
Activision Blizzard was said to be refusing to cooperate with Double Fine over getting the game released prior to EA's acquisition. ActiBlizz doesn't think the game could become a ten-year-old exploited franchise, so it doesn't want to publish it. However, Activision is a jealous God, and just because it won't publish the game, that doesn't mean it won't try and hoard the rights.
EA is rather confident about the whole thing, especially with Double Fine claiming it alone has rights to the game since Vivendi's execution at the hands of ActiBlizz. Brütal Legend's new publisher only had this to say over the matter:
We doubt that Activision would try to sue. That would be like a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy.
Oh sh*t, son, it's on!
I'm naturally against Activision in any fight, and it's just because of things like this. The publisher abandoned a number of excellent looking titles just because it couldn't milk them the same way it's milked Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. Frankly, Activision should suck it up. Double Fine deserves to have this game published, so here's hoping that the "ex-husband" doesn't have his own way.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I will only buy Modern Warfare 2 because of Infinity Ward...
I NEED this game.
So the only thing I can say is that Tim Schafer is lord, and any attempt to block, hinder, or completely ruin his works in any way is heresy. Activision should burn in hell, and EA should publish Psychonauts 2 yesterday. If that is not possible, now or the near future will suffice.
INTERESTING ANECDOTE: When I saw the cover of EGM that debuted this game, I thought it was another Guitar Hero.
And the fact that recently it was announced the Blizzard is apparently required or obligated (whatever) to release at least one game a year due to ActiBlizzard's financial situation further verifies this theory.
However, this is all still just conjecture on my part and those of you who actually play WoW may or may not agree with me in regards to my thoughts on the latest expansion's lack of polish (i.e. patches that render the game unplayable for days) but the fact of the matter is that with Activision at the helm it seems to me that if the product isn't as easily exploitable in terms of annual releases like "Guitar Hero" the future does not seem all that bright when it comes to our games of choice.

**NOTE: By the way, for those of you that still hate WoW or any other titles released by Blizzard please continue to do so. IZ OK XD. **
That said, fuck Activision. They became EA, and deserve the negative feedback they are getting. The only reason I'm buying COD: MW2 is because it's being developed by Infinity Ward. I'll leave buying Guitar Hero to my brother, who loves that series. But other than that, they aren't getting money from me (Singularity looks good, though).

Yes, my mistake. You were correct Splaa. No need to be a douchebag about it.
It sucks seeing Blizzards good name tarnished when spoken in the same sentence as these terrible happenings

Okay now that I've calmed down; What the Fuck A-B this is one of the backward-ass piles of crap I've ever heard of. Since the merger I ahve been relativly okay with A-B, since most of the problems they caused resolved themselves, but this finishes off any remaining respect I have for Activison.
This kind of underhanded bullshit and the company admittedly looking to exploit their franchises annually has really made me lose interest and faith in Activision products as a whole. Almost the same way I lost faith in EA years ago, but then again EA has made earnest strides in recent years to release fresh IPs with broader appeal and I now openly play (and enjoy) their games such as Mirror's Edge, Army of Two, amongst others.
Unfortunately, if Activision isn't careful they will be doomed to repeat EA's mistakes. At this point, though, I wouldn't even care. Serves them right.
This man is a walking (yet profitable i WILL admit that) shitstorm. Every object that passes within his realm becomes soaked in a layer of shit and underhandedness that it makes it untouchable to me.
I'm sad that we'll have to see all id products pass under his gaze
I also second Mxyzptlk's suggestion... but I will change it to bisexual ladies instead... just in case.
I know I'm sure as hell buying it
BRUTAL LEGEND WILL BE SUPREME!
