Activision treats its devs well, pays them millions photo

Just when you thought this sh*t might be dying down Activision steps in and fires back. This firing/lawsuit controversy is like the biggest industry smack talking competition ever. EA is clearly winning at the moment, with Infinity Ward employees in a close second, but Activision is back with its own defense.

Activision COO Thomas Tippl is defending his company's treatment of game developers. "We treat our developers extremely well," he said this week. "We have an independent studio model that provides them a lot of creative freedom while we take care of the back office stuff so they can focus on making games.

"If their games are successful, they are compensated better here than anywhere else. We've been paying our talent millions of dollars for their work. Our setup provides a win-win opportunity. We ensure your work will reach a wide audience. Therefore, we have attracted, and we will continue to attract, the top talent in this industry."

Oh, snap!? Still in third I think.

All of Wal-Marts products are American made, and Detroit is actually a lovely place to live and great for retiring elderly.

Creative freedom while franchise whoring? Of course they have that freedom.

Yeah, the developers get a few million while Activision takes the rest of the BILLIONS! Doesn't sounds very fair to me.

The more i read this the more i feels like an edited video, this would be the uncut version

"If their games are successful, they are compensated better here than anywhere else (in China). We've been paying our talent millions of dollars for their work (and even then compared to what we've earned and how we treat them it's clearly a rip-off). Our setup provides a win-win opportunity (for us). We ensure your work will reach a wide audience (but scam devs out of their royalties). Therefore, we have attracted, and we will continue to attract, the top talent in this industry (until more bailing IW devs tell their story, which should be shortly)."

CoD may have been the biggest cash cow franchise in Activision's arsenal, but they still have Guitar Hero and Blizzard's games up it's sleeves.

"We've been paying our talent millions of dollars for their work."

What does this sentence even mean? Either that they pay each individual "talent" millions, unlikely. Or they collectively pay their thousands of employees millions of dollars in total, unsurprising.

Is that really the best defense they have? I'm sure McDonald's pays their "talent" millions of dollars, in total.

So those guys who invented Guitar Hero must really be loving it, since that's one if the most successful franchises ever, right? Oh wait...

Ok...business perspective. Nearly every one of the developers they employ have contracts that dictate how much they are paid on top of merit pay. Merit pay means, if the game sells a sick amount of copies......you get more. MW2 sold a sick amount of copies. I would be willing to bet that the majority of the devs on the game made nearly or over a mil due to the success. That ain't bad my friends.

Right, that's why your crown jewel team is bailing out like crazy? Almost every single lead from each category has left you and all you have left are grunts. "if the game is successful" means it has to do MW2 level of successful. Apparently EA pays better even if they don't do as successful.

yeah whatever, thats why there holdings IW's bonus pay and forcing them to stay with them to pay them in increments.

Sure, they may compensate well. But they'll take a franchise your studio created, hand it to another developer, and have them make 10 crappy spinoffs and sequels. They will milk a franchise till it's no longer a viable money maker anymore.

Guitar Hero = Drained
Call of Duty = Drained
Tony Hawk = Drained
Spiderman = Drained
Brutal Legend = Wait, didn't they drop that cause they couldn't make 10 spinoffs?
Warcraft = Coming soon - World Of Warcraft: World at War; Developed by Obsidian.

Sometimes problems run deeper than just money.

Ofcourse Activision allows for a lot of creative freedom... so long as that freedom is used to whore out the really profitable franchises and don't steer to far away from a working formula...

Ya, you need only ask that if a IW came over and said "we want to try making something original and not another call of duty game" how would Activision respond... if the answer is an obvious hell no, then you're not allowing creative freedom

oh and good job giving IW that 30 million bucks they earned for making one of the hottest selling games ever... they really appreciate it

Nothing More, Nothing less.
They should know that treating well its devs involves a lot more that a paying check. No wonder this IW x Activision is happening

Money is nice but that only goes so far, there has to be another reason that you stay at that job. I'm sure they do pay well but I'm guessing it's not crazy good. A developer could go elsewhere and make around the same money I'm guessing. So if Activision pays it's developers well why do they leave? Because they're sick of all it's crap.

If you treat your devs better than everyone else why make the accusation that West and Zampella were talking to EA before you kicked them out? If you're so great why would anyone want to leave or get embroilled in countless lawsuits with you? This is possibly the weakest defense I've ever seen a company dish out.
the7k's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/18/2010 17:17

If I remember correctly, treating your employees well means more than just paying them billions. It also means giving the autonomy and variety.

Activision has failed on both counts. Every team at Activision works on one franchise and one franchise alone (all of which have run their course), and Activision gives them absolutely no freedom to go in a new direction. Hell, they fought the whole idea of Modern Warfare tooth and nail, and that was from their most successful studio.

Once again, this is a case of suits running a business that requires at least SOME creative thinking - and the suits being completely incapable on comprehending that.

You can tell now that Activision is getting desperate considering how weak a response this is.

Creative freedom? Creative freedom?! You've made your employees work on the same game over six times over, I wouldn't call that creative freedom, more like milking.

Can't wait to see the conclusion to this legal battle.
