Activision strikes back with 'Tony Hawk Innovation Plan', whatever that is photo

GamePro has put up a short blurb with an update on the sequel to Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground. The story focuses on a few lines from a USA Today feature on Tony Hawk — the man, the myth, the legend. The story discussed Hawk’s storied career in skateboarding and his widespread influence, which has been helped immensely by Activision’s Tony Hawk games, of course.

Part of the USA Today story listed Hawk’s varied business pursuits, the first of which was his eponymous videogame series. Apparently, Hawk still has a hand in the franchise, as he’s helping Activision to “reinvent and bring new thrills” to future entries in the long-running series.

It seems that the overwhelming success of EA’s skate. — it sold twice as many copies as Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground — has also invigorated Neversoft’s competitive drive. The article quoted Will Kassoy, Activision’s Senior Vice President, who introduced the “Tony Hawk Innovation Plan” by name only; no further details were given.

Destructoid’s readers already expressed their opinion exactly three months ago in a Game Debate to the Death, but does this four-word statement leave you guys with any hope for the future of the Birdman’s games? If not, well, good luck trying to pull off The 900 in skate.

[via GamePro & USA Today — thanks, Justin!]

Yeah Skate was much better as far as realism, but I think that Tony Hawk has its place... it just needs to get back to its roots. No more goofyness, or openworld nonsense. Timed runs, really tough objectives. Thats when it was fun

You know, I used to be a huge Tony Hawk fan. But it just got old. I used to play THPS 3 and 4, like, all fucking day. I was obsessed with perfecting my skills and scoring millions of points. But it got stale. I bought Tony Hawk's Underground and it just didn't do it for me. The whole attitude of the series changed, and the gameplay, well, it didn't.

I have yet to play skate though, and I keep hearing great things about it. Either way, I hope they do something special with the Hawk series. I would love to see something new from them.

I'll wait for Tony Hawk: The Good Game Edition.

They've milked this series so much, powdered milk is being produced. Enough..let the series ride into the sunset with some dignity.

the ps1 and n64 graphics are mostly horrible, but that era had some of the greatest innovation ever. Sadly I don't think the industry will ever get as creative as the early 3d games. Everything just gets more shiny and brow, or more wagllier(you know what I mean)

Same as EternalDeathSlayer, except that I enjoyed the 2 THUG games. After that, it just went downhill, or at least farther down the slope.

Just let the Tony Hawk franchise have some bench time. I haven't really had much fun with TH since Pro Skater 3.

Uh huh,, yup, sure, oh yeah...

Just shut up, cut the BS, and admit that skate evicted your asses to the curb.

Skate completely blew me away in every aspect. Shifting from your only skating game being all the Tony Hawks to the masterpiece that is Skate. was a tough at first transition, not because I didn't like it, but because it was tough, but amazing.

Honestly, Tony Hawk can never recover unless they completely copy Skate.

I think they need to give Tony some time off because in order to make a comeback don't you usually have to go away for a while? I'm getting a bit sick of all this skate infinitely better than Tony Hawk talk. Don't get me wrong Skate is better but it's kind of like comparing Ridge Racer to Gran Turismo they are different styles of games. I fucking love THPS3 and 4 and Neversoft need to go back and remember what made them great and stop trying to be the best by adding too many goofy features.

Somehow I think TH will not be able to top Skate in terms of gameplay, TH1 rocked but since the second one it all went downhill imho, Skate was/is fucking brilliant, it totally reminds me of what it feels like to be skateboarding ( used to do it untill I broke my ankle so badly that my toes were touching my shin... )

Tony Hawk 1-3 were amazing. THAW showed promise, and then THP8 was incredible. I had high hopes for THPG, but it was horrid.

Also, 900's are easy to do in Skate if you are at the mega ramp. On a regular half pipe, I got 720 once.

Maybe Neversoft will release for this one, releasing it on a annual basis might not be the best of ideas. Taking an extra year with it opens up for more time to brainstorm, polish, etc.

Being a fan of the Tony Hawk games ever since its release back when I was in the 6th grade (1st year Uni now), I think back to how awesome the franchise use to be. THPS1-THUG were all excellent games in my book. However, after THUG2, things did start to fall apart, and all that was being added to the series was useless mechanics and toilet humor.

THP8 and THPG were decent attempts to return to what the Hawk games use to be, but they were just getting old. skate., as everyone has already said was a fresh experience. It wasn't goofy, it was just skating... a well needed change from what was currently on the market.

You just need to change it up Neversoft, make things fresh again, dare I say... make it more about the skating? No need to check people a thousand feet, or race RC cars. Just... skate.

I hope they make it awesome. I love the tony hawk series and have all the games, but to this day 4 is still my favorite.

It's pretty depressing that they couldn't be bothered to make a better game until a legit competitor came along.

The best Neversoft can hope for is winning back the gamers that want to do silly flatground combos and pretend skateboarding ended with Rodney Mullen.
Everyone who actually skateboards got behind Skate, and with good reason. It finished exposing the Tony Hawk series for the joke that it is.

"Tony Hawk Innovation Plan"
see: copying skate.

I was a huge fan of Tony Hawk 1,2,3,4,THUG, THUG2. I even liked Project 8, but like I've said on Destructoid once before - when I'm doing a 720 Method backflip off of a dragon into a darkslide onto a rollercoaster...and I'm bored, then the game has stopped being fun or innovative. Skate brought back the innovative feel. Tony Hawk began to feel like just a game, skate feels like you're skateboarding.

The king is dead. All hail skate.

lame, they claimed "revolution" from the rooftops when releasing THAW, THUG and P8.

Wait a second....

change?

900? hell i can do a 720 in a pool. get some skate skills.
seriously though, i don't think i can go back to a Hawk game unless they indeed copy the control scheme of skate; at least somewhat.

TH had it's day, I got bored of the series after THPS4, but for the time they were fun, they just haven't innovated since the early days.

But who didn't walk along the street after playing too much THPS and look for the lines, railslide along the chainlink fence, up onto the gutter, 1080 kickflip back flip off the top of the house. Yeah, it got all the same pretty quickly.

I bought the last two Tony Hawk games for 360 and I still haven't even unwrapped the plastic. I don't care how innovative this is; I'm not spending another dime on that franchise.

The last one sucked big time, back in the days of THUG or THPS3 I used to LOVE the series.

i love skateboarding games in general, thps went stale after thps3, project 8 was a step in the right direction, but sktate. took that mechanic and made it obsolete.

i agree with king3vbo, thps has its place, as the tedios button masher with just ass rapingly hard challenges. thats what its best at.

skate. is my go to game whenever i can't figure out what to play, i can just tool around for hours.
