Activision says Modern Warfare 2 not banned in Russia photo

The official word from Activision is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has not been “banned” from store shelves in Russia, but whether or not the game has been pulled as reported because of the kinda-controversial “No Russian” airport massacre might still be up in the air.

In a statement given to VG247, the publisher of the latest Infinity Ward-developed title said, “Reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia are erroneous. Activision only released a PC version of the game in Russia which went on sale on Tuesday, November 10.”

Pulling copies effectively bans the title, but we’re going to be a bit cautious with the publisher’s wording here. We’ve contacted an Activision representative for clarification and shall bring you that when we can. If, by chance, you’re in Russia this afternoon and spot a copy of the game, feel free to drop us an e-mail.

[Update: In a statement given to Edge, Activision said they blocked the scene -- we're assuming the No Russian level -- after being advised by legal counsel. It's unclear if this happened pre or post release.]

Is the US the only country left with a functional, non censored, No Russian level?

See: obscured sarcasm. My point being, this level is already blocked and/or censored in at least 3 countries now.

195 countries in the world. Blocked and/or censored in about 3 countries. No the US is not the only country with a functional, non censored version.

How can a scene be blocked post release?

I give up trying to be sarcastic. You win, I'll be serious from now on.

How can content be blocked on disc... Ask the creators of LittleBigPlanet. It's called a Day-0 Patch.

Can't you make sure your game isn't updated? At least that way you could play the scene until you want to play online or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if the game was released with it blocked, but the censors heard about the airport level and want it banned anyway, even though its not in their version of the game.

Jim obviously didn't read the comments in the last article, where russian version users, like me, told him about the situation
PC version was not banned or pulled of the shelves, you just have to: a) play with steam language in Russian and the game set to russian (it installs only 4gb otherwise and doesn't work) b) just dream about playing No Russian level which skips (it is included in the game files and was translated, but you can't choose if you wish to include it in the gameplay or not. the answer is forced to No.
console versions were pulled, yes.
And the game was censored after being translated but before the release.

Btw, other post-soviet countries will actually be getting the PS3 version anyway.
