Activision's Kotick: 'We might have to stop supporting Sony' photo

Activision boss Bobby Kotick has dropped a huge bomb on Sony today with a few statements concerning their support for the PlayStation 3 and PSP. In short, the world's largest third-party games developer doesn't like their attach rates for Sony's consles and is threatening to withdraw support.

“I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,” he says.

What Kotick is pushing for, like many others, is a PlayStation 3 price cut.

“They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony,” Kotick tells Times Online. “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.”

While Kotick may sound a bit cocky here, I don't think Sony wants to sit on statements like these. And no one is going to argue about the PS3 needing a price cut either.

Do you think Sony could live without Activision?

I love how the man that charges $200 for a cheap piece of plastic for peripherals calls the PS3 expensive. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

But Activision would lose money if they boycott the PS3. Call of Duty 4 sold very well on it. I think Bobby wants some attention, and threatening to take away games from PS3 in an attempt of lots PS3 owners buying a lot of crappy Activision games.
To be honest, it's not big loss if Activision boycott, they haven't released a worthwhile game in years.
Luckily I'm a 360 owner, so I can still buy Guitar Heros and Tony Hawks. :D

Well to be fair sony does need a real price drop and not one of those clearance sale an older ps3 model to be replace with a newer one with less features.

Damn right! Hadn't even considered it, but Guitar Hero instruments are a rip off, although, so are Rock Band's.

also, it's not really expensive the PS3, it's just what a WORKING, RELIABLE, EVERYTHING INCLUDED console costs.

When you get a 360, WiFi adapter, Controller charge packs, extortionate HDD, Live subscription, not to mention if HD-DVD drives had stuck around you'll be paying WAY MORE than you would for a PS3. And it would still RRoD or E74 in a year anyway!!!

He's bluffing/jawboning. They won't stop developing for the PS3 or PSP console so long as they are getting some kind of return that's positive, net of borrowing costs. Granted the ROIC might be better on the other consoles, but as long as what they're getting back from investing in Sony is higher than their cost of capital, it doesn't make economic sense for them to stop developing for their platforms.

-----------------------

You mean like MS? Release an "Arcade" version, or perhaps remove anything that could be considered an "extra" from the main SKU and start charging EXTRA for them on top of the console? Then start charging for PSN membership and paying millions to have "available on PS3" on the end of every multiplat game advert?

Wank. Me. Off.

Sony's PS3 sales are hitting their targets. Activision should have known in advance what these targets were and should have said something sooner had they had a problem with them.

PS3 is not the "everyman-console" it's the elite, for those who want more than an Xbox offers. For those who want a console that will still be alive in 5 years and one that uses media and hardware that will still be cutting edge in 10. Not a glorified PC with millions of... wait for it, wait for it.... 12 year olds with parents on welfare shouting racist profanities on their headsets and a million generic FPS games.

The fact that when all is said and done, and you're sitting down to wank over some online Halo via WiFi, with a controller that doesn't go through batteries like a fucking rampant rabbit on speed - you've paid as much as a PS3 costs anyway?

The thing that might make this more than saber rattling is the fact that the majority of ATVI's titles have significant plastic tied to them.

Cancelling a PS3 SKU of a normal game really only buys back development time, but cancelling a PS3 SKU of a game with controllers means you have tens of millions of dollars that you don't have to spend ahead of time building millions of platform-specific guitars/drums/skateboards/turntables for a launch, or finding warehouses to store them in before they get to retail, or finding ships to sail them over from China.

Spoken like a true douche Kotick. "They don't make me as much money as I want them too and it's too expensive to develop games on a system which I've already got an engine for, so I'm just going to drop them"

That's basically what Kotick just said. There's absolutely no reason to stop development for the PS3 when almost every game they release has an already made engine. CoD? Check. Guitar Hero? Check. See a pattern?

How's THIS Mr. Kotick? YOU drop the prices of your older games, ($40 for CoD4 on PC is ridiculous), THEN you can ask Sony to drop THEIR prices.

I think this is the way it will play out:

1. The cheap to produce Slim PS3 released in fall with a $100 price cut.
2. Is the most basic PS3 package yet, but it looks so sweet so...
3...it sells like crazy.
4. Attach rate goes up.
5. Sony turns a profit
6. 3rd parties shut up.

Short of EA dropping Madden for PS3, this is pretty much the biggest blow that could be dealt to Sony. Uncharted and Metal Gear are great and all, but the Saturn had some kick ass first party games too...

Not to mention, why the hell would Sony be worried about a Publisher pulling from their platform if it is not selling ;) Seems like an idle threat for me and they make it sound like their games are the only ones played in the world.

Sexualchocolate...PS3 is the the Elite?? FUCK OFF. I've got news for you. PS3 has a large casual user-base. How else can you explain such low attach rates?

Now, I'm perfectly happy to accept that it ticks all the right boxes for the hardcore fan, indeed it has excellent games that appeal to the hardcore. But a lot of people bought PS3s because they were buying into the 'Sony is best' spiel, and they now sit around waiting for games like Fifa, or Tomb raider to come to their system. Hence LOW ATTACH RATES.

Now I want to make it clear, I'm not dissing the PS3, I personally think it is an ace system (but an awkward one), but for you to think that the PS3 is the choice of the Elite gamer is delusional. Sure there will be a lot of Elite gamers on it, but nowhere near as many as on the 360.

ok , so i'm a ps3 only guy (not a fanboy). let's see if ican determine why there games aren't selling...

a quick look at there list of games:

yearly raping of the call of duty franchise ( not interested, sorry)
yearly raping of the tony hawk franchise ( not interested, not with a plastic skate board either )
multi-yearly raping of the guitar hero franchise (not interesetd )
movie games... not interested
then there's prototype ... (good job, but i'm going to rent it)

so what's left?
marvel ultimate alliance 2, i'm excited about this, but idoubt it's going make any kind of impact saleswise...

so the real problem here is that actision keeps slinging out more of the same, and ps3 owners have better things to play... i mean they release their one original game ( prototype ) 2 weeks after infamous...

From what I've read in a few other places the PS3 still makes Activision money, again for emphasis Activision's games on the PS3 does turn a profit for the company. Yea maybe not as much as a Wii shovelware title, or a 360 game, but its still a profit none the less. Also yea wastedyears response is the best. If they dump something that does actually make money I'm sure the shareholders won't be upset at all right? I think its just all corporate bullshit. While he may have somewhat of a point from his point of view, he should consider what would happen if he did do this. No money from PS3 software sales...less income for the company...stockholders get pissed...he resigns for fear of getting booted out...new CEO appointed...announces new partnership with Sony. All because he didn't want to do something that was a little challenging and maybe a pain in the ass to make his company money. Gee where has this guy been living the past forever years. Everyday at work most people do something hard or challenging that might not even be their job in order to keep their job and make their company money. Yea I'll give him a big middle finger as well.

Wow I don't even have a PS3 and this guy's pissing me off. I understand the PS3 is hard to develop for but to actually say something like this is really dumb considering people alreadly complain how high the prices for their crap is. If this was some indie developer I wouldn't have a problem but they have the time and the money to sell better games for slightly less. Maybe his games would sell better if he didn't try to less the same games with better graphics every two seconds! At least Nintendo let's me miss them.

There is no causal relationship that an increase of attachment rate will lead to an increase of game being sold. But I will say that there are other factors in involve. Some prefer to play the game on Live as it is more robust than PSN.

Activision Blizzard is a games company, not a game charity. If their margins are relatively good on the PS3 and PSP, then they should make PS3 games. If their margins aren't relatively good on the PS3 and PSP, then they shouldn't.

It is not about emotion or making certain gamers happy or unhappy or how it "plays" on Destructoid. It's about carefully managing billions of dollars of other people's money.

Activision's pretty bold to say something like this and it's kinda uncalled for, but this isn't all on Activision. Sony's created this situation fro themselves through brutal mismanagement of the PS3 since it's initial design stages. Disregarding the consumers completely to push some pointless proprietary chip and their new high-def format no matter how much it cost the slobbering Sony early adopters, who Sony have already claimed will buy anything from them no matter the price (Said this with the PSP Go too), and you've got their current situation. Sony's been a huge dick this whole generation, and while they've made it up to me with great software, I do think they need a kick in the pants so they realize that the way they've exploited their fanbase continually is unacceptable. They were only able to do it because they're Playstation, I don't think anyone can imagine the 360 or Wii launching with all the problems the PS3 had and coming out alright. If PS4 is anything like PS3 I really hope they do fail because competition is one thing, but I'm not interested in maintaining an abusive platform for the sake of competition, Playstation or not.

I bought 2 60GB PS3s at launch....and given the amount of exclusive games I've purchased (All multiplatform purchases goto my 360...sorry its been this way since XBOX vs PS2...XBOX Live is just better)......

I have to say...I have not gotten my 1200$ worth......Sony had better wakeup...their arrogance reeks of the same arrogance that SEGA had with the SATURN when the PS1 debuted.

Listen to your fans, listen to the developers, get exclusives = You get loyal customers.....pretty simple equation.

There's no way they'd do this. While I agree that more people usually buy their multiplatform games on 360, there has to be a large amount of PS3 users who would end up pissed that they couldn't play major Activision titles/money-grabs. Would Activision really cut out such a large potential audience? I think not.

Business POV: This could be huge. Activision is a cash cow. If they cut off that steady cash supply, It could be huge losses on both ends. So chances of this actually happening are very slim.

My POV: I don't like Activision and I don't have a PS3 (yet) so I could care less.

As long as returns on the PS3 games are higher than the investment to create them (which I'm shure by now they are, I mean, when the system just came out I'm shure it cost them more money then they made but now they have to be making money of the PS3, thy already have the people and the software) they won't drop support and saying they will is just a lame attempt to sound all badass and try to get a rise out of sony.

Besides, except for Call of Duty I can't think of a single think I'm actually interested in that is published by Activision, and sine I really only play COD single player (yes I'm know I'm weird) then it's just as easy to download the 360 version a week before it drops and play it there - cheaper too.

Developers need to quit bitching about how hard the PS3 is, there committed to the cell now if they want any form of backwards compatibility with PS3 games (which I'm going to guess they will have, at least on the launch consoles), I mean the next system should easily emulate a PS1 and PS2 but the PS3 cell will need some serious power to fake, enough that I doubt there going to be able to put it in the PS4 without charging as much as the death star.
