Activision reviving Apache series for PS3, 360 this fall photo

Activision is pulling its Apache franchise out of the vaults, announcing that a new title, Apache: Air Assault, will ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.

Developed by Gaijin Entertainment, the game will focus on helicopter combat, with players controlling Apache attack choppers to prevent terrorist attacks. The game will feature 16 missions, including air and combat ops spanning the globe from Africa to the Middle East, created using high resolution satellite data.

While the Apache series has traditionally focused on realism and simulation, Air Assault will feature various modes to cater to different player types. Just wanna blow crap up? Try the "Arcade Mode." Wanna twiddle with some knobs and really feel like you're raining death upon a Central American jungle? "Realistic Mode" is for you. The game will also feature cooperative modes (one player pilots the chopper, the other the co-pilot), as well as online modes (Team Deathmatch, Ground Attack, Capture the LZ, and Ground Strike).

Admittedly, my experience with the Apache series is seeing it in GameStop's used game bargain bin and wondering why it had so many copies of it lying around. Any of you thinking about picking this one up when it ships this fall?

The only helicopter games I think I've ever played were Jungle Strike, Desert Strike, etc. I don't even remember hearing about Apache???

Oh well, hope it turns out to be good. I like games where you fly around and blow crap up.

In before PC nerds start whining about yet another franchise that started on their favorite system and switched sides.

i hope it will be an realitic combat sim with an appropraitely high learning curve, with extremely high levels of detail and tactical dimensions like the the helicopter sims of old which ate up n00bs and spat them out. oh but wait this is 2010, nah expect 13 year old boy proof complexity ie. helicopters with regenerating health

@Bakewell

Of course it does.

Helicopters are made of the same thing as humans. They push bullets out of "wounds" and heal over. Like people.

I used to play the Commanche Chopper simulators on PC way back and ATTEMPTED to play the JANES series of Appache and Longbow simulators, but soon realized I wanted to actually ENJOY playing a video game, not be forced to actually LEARN how to fly the most difficult to control vehicle ever invented....at some point realisim and simulation goes a bit too far and is no longer a medium for entertainment.

Cool, I really like the flight sims on consoles this gen. I fly X-Plane on PC, but it's good to fire up an objective sim and the console graphics are nice.

@X3Ent3nte A little bit of useless info. Budgie the Little Helicopter was th creation of Ex-HRH Sarah "Back Hander" Ferguson.

Desert Strike was a bloody difficult game.

I love the Strike series.. loved the all three Genesis games and even enjoyed Soviet and Nuclear Strike on the Playstation. Recently bought Nuclear Strike on PSN and it's still awesome.

It will be cool to have a new Apache game.. I also liked the Comanche games, but I'm no sure if they're related.

God forbid a simulator actually simulate anything realistic.

Apache...wow that's a blast from the past. It was a really great game (took forever to get the hang of) but once you got it down, nothing was more satisfying than utilizing a full keyboard to strafe the hell out of a SAM site or convoy all while accounting for wind speed, fuel, front and tail rotor and managing ammo. I think we have had enough stupid "arcade" (or similar) modes on every freakin game for people who quit if they can't complete it in 3 hours. "heyyyy...I LIKE arcade mode, buster. If you don't like it you don't have to play it"~ Jim Gaffigan voice

I take it this is their budget value line like SoF: Payback, then?

And isn't this the developer of X-Blades? No thanks.

What is this I don't even

What, is this meant to take on Ubisoft's Hawx series or something? I like flying choppers/jets in Battlefield as much as the next guy but I didn't know we were in need of a dedicated game... Leave it to Activision to know better than the consumer and tell us what we need!
Mechman's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/15/2010 14:21

Yes, because hawx was the first flight sim EVER.

"While the Apache series has traditionally focused on realism and simulation"

Your kidding right? That series was not even remotely realistic and nowhere near simulation quality. Go play DCS: BlackShark and then you will have an idea of what a realistic simulation is suppose to look like. Apache series was fun...but realistic simulation it was not.
