Activision is pulling its Apache franchise out of the vaults, announcing that a new title, Apache: Air Assault, will ship for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.
Developed by Gaijin Entertainment, the game will focus on helicopter combat, with players controlling Apache attack choppers to prevent terrorist attacks. The game will feature 16 missions, including air and combat ops spanning the globe from Africa to the Middle East, created using high resolution satellite data.
While the Apache series has traditionally focused on realism and simulation, Air Assault will feature various modes to cater to different player types. Just wanna blow crap up? Try the "Arcade Mode." Wanna twiddle with some knobs and really feel like you're raining death upon a Central American jungle? "Realistic Mode" is for you. The game will also feature cooperative modes (one player pilots the chopper, the other the co-pilot), as well as online modes (Team Deathmatch, Ground Attack, Capture the LZ, and Ground Strike).
Admittedly, my experience with the Apache series is seeing it in GameStop's used game bargain bin and wondering why it had so many copies of it lying around. Any of you thinking about picking this one up when it ships this fall?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Oh well, hope it turns out to be good. I like games where you fly around and blow crap up.
I bet budgie the little helicopter has regenerative health.
Of course it does.
Helicopters are made of the same thing as humans. They push bullets out of "wounds" and heal over. Like people.
*googles "budgie the little helicopter", breaks down due to repressed chilhood memories*
There there fella, it'll be alright.
Desert Strike was a bloody difficult game.
It will be cool to have a new Apache game.. I also liked the Comanche games, but I'm no sure if they're related.
God forbid a simulator actually simulate anything realistic.
And isn't this the developer of X-Blades? No thanks.
What, is this meant to take on Ubisoft's Hawx series or something? I like flying choppers/jets in Battlefield as much as the next guy but I didn't know we were in need of a dedicated game... Leave it to Activision to know better than the consumer and tell us what we need!
Your kidding right? That series was not even remotely realistic and nowhere near simulation quality. Go play DCS: BlackShark and then you will have an idea of what a realistic simulation is suppose to look like. Apache series was fun...but realistic simulation it was not.
@Hel105 I thought I was the only one that remembered those!
