Activision announced earlier today a newSpider-Man game coming out for EVERY platform. The new game is called Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and is set in the Ultimate Universe ... universe. The game will also have the talents of Gabrielle Dell'Otto who has done art work in the Secret Wars saga.
The premise is that New York city has been invaded by some kind of alien forces that seem to use the Venom Symbiote. I'm just taking a wild guess on the Venom Symbiote bit based on the teaser trailer above from IGN. Anyway, other Marvel heroes have come to New York to help fight this threat and even the villains are lending a hand.
New to the series is the ability to fight anywhere. You can start a fight on the streets and take the battle into the air. You'll also have a choice when it comes to how you play the game. You could help protect citizens and gain their respect or you could just totally ignore them causing citizens to make your job harder. This new Spider-Man game is again going to allow players to freely roam about New York City. How you play the game will determine which super hero or super villain will fight along side you as you try and fight off this alien invasion.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is going to be giving a lot back to the community. Tipster Liqideos informed us that people will be able to vote for what comes in the Premium version of the game when it comes out. The options will consist of a T-shirt, figurine, or a poster made by Gabrielle Dell'Otto. The official Web site for the game is also going to give a lot of control to the community. The community will be able to vote for what goes into the game and what new details are released about the game too.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows will be at the New York Comic-Con this weekend. Nick Chester will be at the Con and should be getting himself an interview with the executive producer and get some details on this new Spider-Man game (The pressure is on Chester!). FYI, a few Dtoiderswill be attending the event as well.
I am totally excited for a new Spider-Man game. He is one of my favorite super heroes so it's a given that I'd be excited. How about you?
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

Meet the rest of the team
When I watched the trailer earlier today, it really felt more encapsulated with taking Spidey farther. Its almost like that moment when you're playing Snake vs Metal Gear. Everything leads up to a huge fight, and you're not sure what to do. And that's how I felt when I watched the trailer, I'm not sure what other ways I could describe that feeling.
Even better, the team that has put together Marvel Ultimate Alliance; is also working on this. I have grown a soft spot for MUA, its just a fun game you'll want to explore with each & every character.
In some ways, being Spidey (like the comic) is just that, exploration to unknown territory. And its both exciting, and frightening at the same time. But Web, has a more "so I'm the hero.. I'm alone what do I do now?" And finding out you're not alone, makes it more worthwhile to be in his shoes.
I'm hoping this is more like Spider-Man 2 or Ultimate Spider-Man rather than the last two games they released. I want another awesome free-roaming game please.
So, for a plotline they painstaikingly came up with something original, rather than just reading last month's Mighty Avengers and cribbing a plotline from that then.
Hopefully the web-swinging mechanics will be like Spider-Man 2, where you actually fire web lines at buildings and get to execute stunts in the air. I never played 3 but from what I gather I didn't miss much.
Even though NY is under alien attack or whatever, it would be good if they made it more alive that 2, which would only have a handful of people and the odd car wherever you looked in what should be one of the world's busiest cities.
theres potential here. i've been a spidey fan before i could even read and that classic tv theme will always be the real spidey theme, i bought nearly all of em besides that friend or foe game. this looks like a return to greatness for spidey because theres no movie license holding the story back. it can be as long ( i hope) as it wants or needs to be.
i'm just wondering what they'll do for voice talent.
The fact that there are going to be other super-heroes in the game makes me dream of a mix of ultimate alliance and spider-man 2, where you can explore the city with every hero and his own unique set of ablities or maybe even a team of heroes.... that would be AMAZING!
I think the Spiderman 2 game was great but these games are starting to lose their shine. I really used to love how you could press "R" to shoot a web from the right hand and "L" to shoot webbing from the left hand. They took that out when Ultimate Spiderman came out and that's when I lost hope. Developers need to stop simplifying stuff. I hope this doesn't suck.
o hey i saw this months ago...i saw this game right in the middle of production.it was pretty awesome then, i cant wait to get my hands on a finished product.
Hopefully this game accomplishes what no other superhero game has been able to do yet - actually make you feel like you have importance in the world. I'm really interested at the concept of civilians reacting to your actions, that fits perfectly with the Spider-Man character who jumps back and forth between being liked and trashed by the public in the Marvel universe. Hopefully they play up the importance of Peter Parker himself - frankly I think being able to play as the character in photo-missions for the Bugle would be awesome or something.
The only thing that concerns me is the "evil" that is infecting the city. That looks a lot like a symbiote element. Dear God, please let it be something else. Come on, this is based in the comics universe - let's make use of some new villains in a freakin' Spider-Man game! If this is a city-wide threat, we need some AIM or Hydra involvement!
Wow, I had actually just been thinking about picking up Spider-Man 2 the other day. Now I'll hold out, please let this be the one game to rule them all!
Oh too bad I already know what happens but it is a cool story!
I read the comics around this a year or two ago and yeah, it has to do with Venom and his symbiote planet that he escaped. They want him dead and they need a new planet for new life... eh spoilers

(however, i played Spidey 3 and it's going to take a miracle to wash the taste outta my mouth from that one)
Oh, actually...

...Still have high hopes for this game, though...

lets hope this game takes the good from that and adds to it, and weve got something to work.
