Activision promising better, original Wii games. Yeah, right photo

Activision CEO and drinker of virgin blood Bobby Kotick has promised that evil publisher Activision will be looking to provide better content on the Wii, instead of the cheap ports and endless Guitar Hero sequels that the company will actually provide.

"In the past we approached the Wii as an extension of what we were doing on PlayStation and the Xbox and I think we can do a better job of creating original content for the Wii," claimed Kotick as he bathed in the quivering entrails of children and lambs. "And I think you'll see more of that this year."

Kotick also believes that the games industry will survive this tough economic climate, due to the fact that "there's probably more opportunity for our industry than just about any other industry I can think of other than maybe bankruptcy lawyers." Of course, that's all dependent on whether or not publishers alienate their consumers with a saturation of sequels and sub-par games that could ultimately cause another game market crash. Not that Activision is responsible for that or anything.

Evil Bobby Kotick's other main point is that console prices are still not suitable for the mass market and that cheaper machinery is the way forward. He also believes that he will achieve ascension on the night of the red moon when four score oxen are slain and a brazen calf weeps beyond the shaded curtain. You know, because he's infernal n' sh*t.

Dear Activision:

As someone who has loved your games from the days of the Atari 2600, these are your Wii requirements from this point on!

1. NO WAGGLEWARE! The next company that thinks that the fucking waggle is so-o-o-o cool gets a bunker-buster in the front door.

2. NO ZOMBIES! Enough! The zombie fad is over!

3. NO SENSELESS SEQUELS! One "Sonic Team" is enough.

4. NO PARTY GAMES! Self-explanatory.

5. YOU WILL ACTUALLY ADVERTISE THE GAME! We've seen too many awesome games languish on the shelves because of no advertising. (See Okami, Zack and Wiki, and No More Heroes.)

6. THE WII ACTUALLY HAS INTERNET CONNECTIVITY! Use it as long as it's appropriate to the game and not a cheap add-on just to add marketing points.

7. CORNER CALIBRATION REQUIRED FOR ANY GAME THAT REQUIRES DIRECT AIMING. Different sized TVs that are played from different distances need proper calibration to identify the correct locations of the corners of the screen.

8. NO FRIEND CODES! They're pointless and insulting.

I'm sure there will be others.

Violation of any of these will result in lots of bamboo under the fingernails and the slow removal of toenails of management and developers who thought that violation of any of these was a good thing.

As long as crap sells on the Wii, that's what you'll get.

I find it ironic that Activision was one of the companies trying to prevent the crash in 1983 while these days they are about to cause one along with Ubisoft.

Companies will make more worthwhile games for the Wii. It just won't be Activision.

Activision:Hmm, what should we do? Make original games or make tons of money? Games or money...games or money....yeah, I propose we make tons of money.

@Chronic Logic:

Your "chronic logic" is apparently out of sync. There is absolutely no reason why they have to be mutually exclusive. Case-in-point: Portal.

Activision was one of the three best game companies in the early 1980s. Just about every game they made was gold. Same thing with (ironically) Electronic Arts. They came out with incredibly creative games that were fun to play. Lately, they've been coming out with formulaic games that are not a lot of fun.

They need to get back to games that are creative, fun, and not priced like we all have massive bank accounts. (And, of course, follow the rules that I set above.) Making and original games and making a ton of money are not mutually exclusive, as you are implying, as long as the developers can find the right balance. Unfortunately, most developers have no idea that there can even be a balance. That's the wall that Activision needs to learn to break down.

So if they are no longer going to treat the Wii as "as an extension of what we were doing on PlayStation and the Xbox", this means that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to get the same crap? Am I understanding this correctly?

Wait a minute isn't this the same company that got rid of perfectly good games because they couldn't milk them every year?

The thing is, only a small fraction of shovelware actually sells - and we all point to that as an example of the Wii's problem. PS3 and 360 aren't the problem, either. World at War and GH:WT on Nintendo are both credible, if lesser, versions of next-gen staples. And they've sold much, much more than 99% of shovelware releases. Hopefully Activision notices that, too.

If true, then I have two things to say: "It's about damn time." and "What took so long?"

I don't think it's true though. I won't believe it until I see it, anyway.
