Activision plans to triple the amount of Guitar Hero games by 2010 photo

Activision, continuing its apparent plan to become the new Electronic Arts, has revealed its sordid scheme to provide twice the amount of Guitar Hero games currently on the market by 2010, effectively tripling the franchise's installments in two years.

It would appear that Activision plans to follow the example set by Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, so it's likely that the new games will be further band-specific titles. CEO Bobby Kotick claims that the The 'Smith has enjoyed more success off the back of Guitar Hero than from any of its albums.

"[Their] version of Guitar Hero generated far more in revenues than any Aerosmith album ever has," he explained. "Merchandising, concert sales, [and] their ability to sign a new contract [have] all been unbelievably influenced by their participation in Guitar Hero."

Well then, let the saturation commence!

Can you say "market over-saturation?" (I think that's what that means, correct me if I'm wrong)

Translation: Activision is tired of successful games and plans to destroy the Guitar Hero franchise within the next 2 years.

Guitar Hero...the new Madden.

Someone I know was telling me that it's ridiculous that Rock Band 2 has come out a year after the first one. I informed them that Guitar Hero is even worse, with the "base" 3, along with the 80's one, Aerosmith, the upcoming WT, the DS game, and the rumored Metallica game.

They said "yeah, but Guitar Hero was first and is allowed to do that".

Um...touché?

I'm surprised it's taken this long. Gamasutra's saying that Aerosmith have sold more units of their Guitar Hero edition, than they have their individual albums. The record companies are fucked and they're realising that music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band help drive sales. So like the music industry tends to do, they've found something that's successful and now they'll flog it to death.

Great. I understand why they want to make more money, but they should concentrate on one game at a time. Rock Band is able to release a ton of DLC and while Guitar Hero is looking to rip off the consumer by having us spending more money on a game than it's worth, they should just try to focus on their main titles and release content for them.

$15 album downloads for Rock Band > $60 game showcasing 20 songs of one artist.

Do not want.

^ Yeah, seriously. Activision has already shown a propensitiy for ripping off good ideas from Harmonix, why not follow their already-established DLC model as well?

There are some bands I would like to see a GH game devoted to, but I would rather spend 15 dollars and be able to choose the songs that I want, rather than shell out 60 bucks for a new game and only end up playing about a third of the songs regularly.

@zombiekiller:

Did you tell him that the people that made Rock Band actually made the original Guitar Hero?

If the Aerosmith game, and subsequent artist driven games were only $30 out of the gate, I'd buy them. But I'm not paying $60 for the exact same game with half the songs.

Wow, way to try killing the genre single-handedly, Activision.

So my fantasy of having one end all GH game every generation and everything else being DLC is impossible?

They need a band specific version of GH for Radiohead. I would buy that up!
