Activision hearts sequels, announces Guitar Hero 5, Modern Warfare 2, and more photo

During an event for in-game advertisers held by Massive Inc. earlier today, Activision Blizzard announced a boatload of games, most of which are sequels you knew were coming eventually.

MTV Multiplayer was on the scene, and reported that Guitar Hero 5, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, an untitled Tony Hawk project, and a Bizarre Creations-developed James Bond game are currently being worked on.

Few details were given at the event, other than the following info: Modern Warfare 2 is dated for this fall; the James Bond game is not a movie tie-in and is described as "Mario Kart meets Forza"; and the next Tony Hawk title will be hands-free.

Excluding the James Bond driving game (who could have predicted that?), it was obvious we'd see sequels to these huge properties down the road. What are you guys most interested in hearing more about?

I'm all for another Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty, myself.

I'm intrigued by the new Tony Hawk. Hopefully Neversoft can produce something that can match up with skate.

...doubt it though.

Man, it's like they're exploiting these things or something. Oh wait...

LOL @ the new James Bond game. I mean what the hell? We already have that one crappy 007 Racing game.

Bizarre Creation (the guys who did PGR and Geometry Wars, right?) are making a Forza-Mario Kart James Bond game? daba-you-tee-eff!!! definitely going to check that game out, as for everything else, yeah... whatever.

Hopefully CoD: Modern Warfare 2 is the next Infinity Ward Call of Duty. The other options scare me:

1) CoD has been handed off to a 3rd developer.
2) Treyarch is pumping it out with just a year of development..

So, can someone explain the point of releasing additional Guitar Hero games instead of just patching the current Guitar Hero game and adding additional downloadable songs? Seriously, WTF?

Hands free Tony Hawk! I hope it includes a really expensive plastic skateboard! What happened to those games? God they used to be fun..

Modern Warfare 2 is the only one that interests me.

I wish they would take up the rock band business model and just start releasing DLC on the regular basis instead of pumping out a massive amount of sequels.

I used to love the Tony Hawk franchise..until I realized I was playing the same game every year. some innovation wouldn't hurt.

Wii exclusive Tony Hawk confirmed! So another spin off then? OK, I'll stay patient for the real sequel.

And another 007 racing game? Why? Was there some kind of demand for this I didn't know about?

Modern Warfare 2? I'll get it. I guess we're done with the CoD: (number) series for good? Of course, once sequels get past four or five they don't want to advertise how many of them there have been, it seems.

Not really surprised by another Guitar Hero. Let's not go too easy on Rock Band, Xhumation- they did release Rock Band 2 very soon after the first Rock Band, and make no mistake about it, we'll have Rock Band 3 in 2009.

If Modern Warfare 2 gets the love it deserves I'm in. I'm still liking the change of scenery, it hasn't gotten old yet.

Yes, RB2 came out soon after RB1, but World Tour was released less than a month ago. Seriously, I bet GH5 and 6 come out next year.

I'm trying to figure out if: At the meeting, Activision Blizzard showcased new games that would make sense for in-game ads, including the vaguely titled “Guitar Hero 5,” which included a screen shot of gameplay with a Burger King ad to the right of the note highway.

Is a joke.

I'd really not be surprised if they're serious about that.

I hope to hell Modern Warefare 2 is just a cash in outsourced game. Then someone might actually make a good original game.

You can't blame them for sticking with what works because people keep buying it. The same people complaining about franchises getting exploited are the same people who will drop their $60.00 on the day it's released. So if you want publishers to try something new, vote with your wallets.

@Wedge: Even if MW2 is a cash-in outsourced game, people will still open their wallets to get it. Which will basically set the stage for Modern Warfare 3. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

Duh, that's fine by me. I'd just prefer another boring sequel doesn't tie up a decent developer. If they can make a good sci-fi FPS like has been rumoured, I might actually be interested.

I do vote with my wallets. I stopped buying Activision games after Call of Duty 4. I hadn't bought very many (I can't actually think of any post Tony Hawk 2 actually) prior to that, but now I'm actively telling people to not buy the cash-ins.

Quantum of Solace was a really good shooter, the mario kart thing just sounds weird for a bond game.

And yay more shitty CoD games, remove the infinite spawning enemies please or fuck you IW.

So Guitar Hero 5 either drops the rest of the band (hence no more world tour) or still has the rest of the band but in explicitly losses an additional descriptor in the title. Either way I'm already confused and all I've seen is the title... not a good start.

At first i was a tad worried about the whole "Modern Warfare 2" thing... but then I realized that it's a fairly new property in the first place, and would be great to play another sick single player campaign in that one.

Oh man, I can't get socially castrated by another modern warfare like the last one. It's not fair, I've lost too many friends and gained too many hours playing that game. It's like the crack of online video games, once you start, you don't look back. And another GH, damn Activision is seriously milking the series. It's been barely four years and there are like six games already. Slow down already and just give us DLC. And hasn't GH Metallica already been officialized? Oh well, I know I'll be purchasing "something" next year, anyways.

I don't think theres anything wrong with continuing with something that works. However when you start doing what EA does with Madden then it starts to matter. Such as the COD series. More than likely I will pick up Modern Warfare 2 because I STILL play it now. Honestly I'd prefer some real alternatives however, there are none. This happened with Ubisoft and Rainbow Six when they decided to cash in by using the exact same mechanics remove the maps we already had and put in new ones which were not as good.

As long as IW itself maintains a level of quality then they are good, if Activision starts making changes I'm sure we will know.

I think more companies need to follow EA's recent example and put out something original....and 007 racing games don't count.

Skate utterly destroyed the Tony Hawk franchise. EA has earned my unwavering loyalty on that one.

Guitar Hero 5 interests me not at all since GH4 was massively eclipsed by Rock Band 2 in terms of quality, polish, and just plain FUN.

Damn. I started the CoD series with MW. It took the release of WaW to peel me away from that. Now MW2? I'm as excited as I am nervous/anxious. It's going to be tough to live up to the quality of the online MW.

Wait, you got the details wrong Grim. From MTV Multiplayer:

"The former 'Project Gotham Racing' studio is also working on an original racing IP for the publisher, which they tagged as '"Mario Kart" meets "Forza."'

The Mario Kart stuff is a completely different game from the Bond game that will release in September. Now I can breathe slightly easier.

the only way that i can conceptualize a hands-free skateboarding game is if the user had to wear special shoes or sensors on the feet that can track wii-mote-style any feet movement as input. imagine imitating what pro skaters do (jumping and kicking both feet out, simulating a kick-push, etc)
a Ninty-style balance board won't work cause how are u really gonna simulate satisfactorily the feet aerobics that are involved in just a simple kickflip ?

still question the "hands-free" coz there are a lot of grab tricks in skateboarding.

i do hope that the Tony Hawk games can mount a serious challenge to black box's skate coz i'd really enjoy a nice old-fashioned gaming rivalry ala FIFA vs. PES (which is really getting stale; however that wii version of PES was interesting to look at, i gotta say)
