Well its safe to say that this was bound to happen. Besides we all know Activision is like a tumor sucking the life out of everything until it dies.
I don't get how its cost would be over the profit...it's same formula with little tweaks with everygame....well they can SAVE some cost by stop releasing peripherals with new game everytime!
If they hadn't spent all that money during the height of the phase (i.e. when licensing is likely to be most expensive) to make enough games to cause its value to plummet rapidly, maybe it could've been sustained for longer.
Is new Guitar Hero DLC dead as well? I've read conflicting reports, but it looks like new Guitar Hero DLC is dead as well.
Finally! Guitar Hero collapses under its own weight. Happens when you saturate the market with too much generic crap. Only a matter of time when Call of Duty finally dies out and we see an emergence of better First-person shooters like Bulletstorm, Brink, Duke Nukem, and RAGE. It's a good day.

Look, I'm a big fan of the music/rhythm genre, but as mentioned you can't keep releasing yearly/multi-yearly in this genre. Music/Rhythm games just don't have the fan base to support that, and you just can't make any dramatic changes to a series year after year.
Well, it's only a matter of time till Activision makes their newest cash cow stale as well and moves on to their next popular IP.

Does anyone else think its funny how Activision keeps saying "demand for music games is declining" or "this genre is officially over" when it's just Guitar Hero that's dying? Pro-Tip: Guitar Hero is NOT the entire music industry, guys.
So you're telling me 3 guitar hero games, plus one rock band game, plus one dj hero game, plus various other rhythm games in one year saturated the genre to the point that no one on earth can possible care about this many music games? I am shocked.

just look at the DDR franchise, almost no innovation at all (with the periferics) but tons of variety among songs

Guitar Hero sells significantly more than all other music games. Rock Band has NEVER been near GH. Dance Central is the only great selling music game.

I'm really surprised to hear that it's so expensive to make. Apart from the music licensing I can't think of much that costs big money.

In other words,its not the development cost that is the problem, its that nobody is buying it because they are FRIGGIN SICK OF THE FRANCHISE..it has been beat to death because these greedy publishers are shortsighted and are strictly thinking that more and more equals better.

I really think this was planned. How would they kill the survival chances of a superior product? By flooding the market with an almost identical, yet inferior one. Bravo.

They made a horrible choice to oversaturate the market and now screw all the people who are just trying to put food on the table. However there is also a bigger issue at hand and that is the costs of licensing music. Most of that money isn't even going to the artists and going to the fat, lazy CEOs of record companies. I think rougly 30% of that money actually goes to the artists. Maybe if the music industry actually did something to change maybe more money would go to the artists and less of a licensing fee could be charged. Then maybe people wouldn't pirate music as much and the music industry wouldn't be in so much trouble, but I digress. Point is as much as Activision are assholes, the music industry as a whole are assholes too. RockBand isn't immune to this part of the issue either.
This is what happens when you saturate the market. I hope Activision learns from these mistakes and doesn't repeat them with future titles. More than one sequel a year is all too much to reach the sales they desire.
@naia-the-gamer; I'm all for change..but in order for that to happen the very same people in charge and making all the money would have to approve..and we all know that's not going to happen..kinda like the united stated government...nothing short of a revolution will cause significant change

2010 had 7 -Hero games. 7. WHO WANTS TO BUY 7 RHYTHM GAMES IN ONE FUCKING YEAR, even disregarding the fact that some of them came with whole new instruments? Fuck you Activision, all you did was force them to come out with the same fucking game with slight improvements so many times in such a small period that the only person who ruined the GH franchise was YOU. Halo comes out with a game once every 3 years or so. They are successful. CoD used to do that until you got 3 developer teams that make 3 separate ones. Now you plan to run CoD into the ground. Bobby Kotick didn't hold a gun to your heads and forced you to buy every game while he violated your family. it's not like this wasn't inevitable. music games have been on the decline and the american market isn't the only market as well folks. I am glad the music craze is gone as I hated it and Harmonix was the ones to start it...and they can die in a fire.
@Corbanski they do have a strong catalog just because they're not the games you choose to buy doesn't mean they don't sell. that's what it's based on mostly.

This is really satisfying news... until I consider that this means many developers are likely out of a job. Many of these greedy-ass publishers are churning out worse and smaller products at our expense, literally. I'm really getting disgusted by so many of their strategies.
I was really looking forward to the next True Crime. The first was one of my favorites and the second, while lacking the bizarro charm of the original, was still a lot of fun.
I'm upset about the loss of DJ Hero. Really? That series is underrated like hell. I agree with infernoman. Why is evrybody so upset. I mean I don't like activisioons way either, but ppl act as if they are the only "evil" company. They have made good games throughout the years, they just milked them too much. But it didn't matter if they released a GH game 5x in 1 year or every 2 years. How long do you expect ppl to stay interested. They just chose to milk it while ppl still gave a damn.
