Activision denies that the music game genre is shrinking photo

The NPD group recently revealed figures that indicate a shrinking market for music games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero. The genre's biggest saturater, (evil) Activision, has naturally come out of the (evil) woodwork to (evilly) deny any such issues, claiming that it believes there is still plenty of room for growth in the realm of plastic toy guitars.

"It has been a difficult economic year for everybody. Videogames are down, music videogames in terms of overall are down, but most people don’t understand that the music videogame category is actually the second largest selling gaming category period," boasts Guitar Hero boss Dan Rosenweig. "So after Call Of Duty … the entire music genre and Guitar Hero franchise will actually be the number two selling game franchise, so that’s a position we actually consider to be enviable.

"We’re focused on providing value to the consumer, so I don’t think [the market for music games] is saturated. If you actually look at the number of consoles that are out there on a global basis, less than 20 per cent actually have a music game. So there’s the next 80 per cent that we have the opportunity to go after. So there are more consoles, those consoles are getting more connected and we have the opportunity to sell more into that audience. So we're not particularly concerned about that."

That's some impressive number spinning, but come on. You can't tell me you're releasing five Guitar Hero games in one year and that you're not saturating the market. That's just from one franchise, too.

I think people are getting sick of buying new Guitar Hero games every year that offers only a little extra innovation over the previous editions. Most people will be happy with just buying the weekly songs dlc.

It has to be getting saturated, I mean how many insane versions are there 10+ with each not that much better than the next.

Ehh, aside from my free copy of Van Halen, I'm pretty much done getting new rhythm games 'til Rock Band 3 shows up, unless DJ Hero surprises the shit out of me when it comes out.

I must add though, there is nothing wrong with the music/rhythm game genre itself at all. People do enjoy it as its a great party game. This saturation is purely the fault of Activision.
If it was HMX releasing the games, i'm all for it, because everyone loves HMX. Their music games are the best.

80 percent of consoles might not have a music game, but that doesn't mean the owners want one. I'm pretty confident that everybody who wants to own one already has one, and that's why sales are so poor.

If you chart innovation in music games to sales I think you'll have your answer. Change it up already! It's like the DDR crash all over again.

RB: Beatles and RB Lego are pretty innovative.
One has the Beatles and the other has Lego. I mean who doesn't love Legos?!

So they can say they want to make you pay more for shit because they feel like it and they want to get rid of any game that doesn't have potenial to be made into a never ending series but when that goes wrong it isn't their fault? Fucking morons.

I think DJ Hero will be a temporary fix for this. Especially because it's NOT developed by Neversoft which might explain why it looks, ya know, good. I think Acti picking it up and tacking the word Hero at the end is a bummer because now it'll get shit for no reason.

But that's a whole 'nother thing. Anyway I think the marketing will shrink back to a niche market but it will never be as small as it was before. It'll probably be more comparable to football game.

I need to go just as bad as you.
What I had this morning
I don't even wanna say to you.
Kick! Punch! Turn and chop the door
Or, I will fall to the floor.
Kick! Punch! Turn and chop the door
Or, I will fall to the floor.

Ribet, ribet
I can't hold it
Last toilet I had, I already sold it.
In the rain or in the snow
I've got the funky flow
But, now I really gotta go.
The toilet over there
Will bring you luck
So give, I've got no time to spare.

@Gene Eric:

Actually, I'ma have to go with Xzyliac and say DJ Hero's looking really good so far, and me being a DJ myself I have a soft spot for any game that attempts to tackle that kind of music, Activision or otherwise. However, I appreciate your by-now-expected brand of pessimism and biased hatred towards certain companies.

I will agree with you on the Harmonix thing though. They're great.

it seems amazing to me that any market still exists for this crap. upwards of $200 for a bunch of plastic, that is just going to end up in a landfill. and the only reason to stick with the plastic guitar genre is that you can download new songs? this is a scam propagated by both activision and the music industry, and it's the long time gamer that will suffer when the bubble bursts and the backlash begins. i'll never buy another activision game again. they're added to the list of shite devs with ea, ubisoft, and hvs.

I appreciate the article if only for finding a way to put such a beautiful head image that ties in with it. Consider me one of the shrinking parties, I own the first three GH, and original RB, but I pretty much refuse to buy another one until they get their shit together and make them worth buying again.
