Activision: Bond games are just as important as the films photo

With the next Bond film dead in the water until MGM gets its act together, the world isn't going to be getting any new Bond action for quite some time (even Jeffery Deaver penned book is a good ways off). Except in the form of a videogame; Blood Stone and GoldenEye 007 are all we're going to get. With that fact in mind, I wondered how important the games were becoming to not only the mythos of Bond, but the franchise as a whole.

Julian Widdow, Executive Producer at Activison Blizzard UK, gave me an answer when I got a chance to talk with him about the upcoming Bond games:

Yes, I do, and I know the producers at EON feel the same way. Although cinematic releases are the lifeblood of the property, games are becoming increasingly important, and the level of involvement we’ve had with the production team over at EON is unprecedented in the history of Bond games. This authenticity is clear when you play the games, and is important to maintain the integrity of the property.

It's interesting, and heartening, to hear that not just the guys working on the Bond games, but EON (the production company behind Bond) is as behind the games as they are the films. I think gaming is a great way to experience Bond, and having the same attention, care, and passion that are put into the films also put into the games can only lead to great things.

Somehow, I'm able to stomach Activisons shit when it's not coming out of the mouth of Satan himself. Rebel pilot my arse cheek. Still, having not actually played a bond game since... I can't even remember the name. It had a blue cover, and Pierce Brosnan, and maybe Everything in the title. Anyway, having not played one since then, and the good stuff I heard about the QoS game, I might have to pick up Blood Stone. Especially since we aren't getting any films for a while.

Side note, I still mini-vomit whenever I see Activions name dirtying Blizzards. *shudder*

Until the new golden eye the only bind game that matters (to me) is the original golden eye.

Also

Yeah, because Blizzard didn't want all the extra money and a larger name attached to their releases. Dirty bastards.

I was actually so impressed by Everything or Nothing; got the original cast (i.e. Judi Dench, Pierce Brosnan) back, and got Willem Dafoe to lend his unmistakable voice.

It had all the production values of a film.

... yeah I want Blood Stone like, now.

This game is looking damn good. Still going to have to give it a rent first though.

I'll remain skeptical. Not that all Bond films are shining example of excellence, but it's an established movie franchise based on a history of quality films. Until games bearing the Bond name have a similar standard in quality, the statement doesn't hold much weight. I can't think of a single Bond game aside from Goldeneye that is celebrated for drawing fans into the Bond franchise like the movies have.

They've been behind the games for awhile now. Everything or Nothing had an all star cast featuring Pierce Brosnan, Heidi Klum, Shannon Elizabeth and Willem Dafore. I don't think it gets any more high profile than that.

I agree with them.
For Some reason I dislike the films but I love playing the games.
That's for all of the 007 franchise

Oh yeah, the same attention, care, and passion that went into that terrible Pierce Brosnan film with the invisible car is really going to help the games out a lot. Or even the same attention, care, and passion that went into Quantum of Solace. Oh yeah. Based on those 2 movies, seems to me that they've got the right idea!

The games are not as important as the films. I would love it if they were, but anyone who really believes this is deluding themselves.

Well, Nightfire had a story at least as half of Brosnan's Bond films. Goldeneye it was not, but it shat all over Die Another Day.

@theswitcher - Any other real Bond, even Timothy Dalton would be better. Hell, go the distance like EA did and get Sean fucking Connery!

Seriously though, [i]Goldeneye[i] was groundbreaking, [i]Nightfire[i], [i]Everything or Nothing[i] and [i]From Russia With Love[i] were very good as well, although no [i]Goldeneye[i]. Hell even when Activision decides to go back to [i]Goldeneye[i], they fuck THAT up to by cramming Mr. Blonde in it.
