Activision apathetic to Modern Warfare 2 PC concerns photo

Infinity Ward has been shielding itself from a torrent of hatred courtesy of upset PC gamers. The decision to not to support dedicated servers, along with a mass of other issues, has meant that Modern Warfare 2 is unwelcome in the home of many a computer game fan. Activision has largely kept quiet on the whole situation, but recently confirmed that it's not really bothered by the situation.

"We're, of course, watching this very carefully and paying attention to it," explains Activision's Mike Griffiths. "But we're not overly concerned about it. One of the problems with our PC SKUs in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be.

"Our solution here improves that consumer experience overall by a significant margin. And so we we think that the benefits we will see are going to far outweigh any negatives that seem to be surfacing."

Infinity Ward and Activision are convinced that the lack of dedicated servers is for the consumer's own benefit, but the reaction of those very same consumers seem to indicate otherwise. With id Software also claiming that dedicated servers are unlikely for RAGE, it looks like this is a situation that may crop up more and more regularly.

Nice pic. A great game made by a dying publisher (Borderlands) vs. a shit game made by a mammoth company. Funny how that works.

Jim, if you drew that header pic, I am in complete and utter awe at your MSPaint skills.
Seriously, that picture is BRILLIANT.
Also, MW2 can suck it.

Surprised the whole "no private/party chat" rules aren't coming up more in the shit-canning of MW2. Me and my brother usually sit in a private channel and "just talk", nothing tactical, no cheating, just talk as we live on opposite ends of the country. I wonder how long it will take for us to get some form of abuse doing that in the game channel

@Infneon That would be because that is an issue specific to the XBox 360. Most of the anger is coming from the PC customers, or, in my opinion, the players that WOULD be customers if IW didn't stir up a beehive with this.

MW2 is a console rental. I have no interest in a downgraded console port that should have been much more. All I ever heard on CoD:MW 360 version was a bunch of 12 year olds cursing and the game, while fun, wasn't anything impressive or groundbreaking.

If games like Doom and Rise of the Triad can easily outbeat a game in features then I hope sales will reflect that.

Integrating a more 'streamlined' service like Live or the PSN to the PC is just the next logical step to monitoring peoples play styles, spending habits etc. and utilizing that knowledge to gain more money from ya'll.

It's going to happen.. here it is.

amazing. activision act as if they really don't see a difference between PC players and console players. i didn't painstakingly build a PC from scratch because i want a "friendly consumer experience". i want options and customizations and control.

Looks like the PC gaming library will be divided into 2 main groups:
Indie / Idealistic / Valve developers
Shit developers

So yeah, IW can go suck a penis popsickle!

BULLSHIT.

they dont need to disable dedicated servers and mods to offer a console like experience. both things can coexist.

Don't worry, PC gamers, even though there are no dedicated servers, there are still plenty of features that are exclusive to your wonderful machines! For example, there is mouse support, in-game text chat, and adjustable graphics!

They don't need to worry because the PC audience is incredibly small compared to the consoles. MW2 is going to bring in a ton of money regardless of any controversies on the PC.

That's not their concern any more. They know the game is going to sell like hot cakes.. it's guaranteed. Now they want to make sure they can monitor all of us suckers so that they can better find out how to make money off of us again and again.

I just can't believe that the PC gamers are such whiny little bitches, IW has carefully plotted out the best way to deliver the best multi-player experience. So all I have to say to the PC gamers is if you don't like it don't buy it and stop bitching. and you may want to get some hand on experience or at least check out a full review after the game releases because it would be a damn shame to call it a "shit game" and make yourself look like an idiot

Gaming sites are divided into 2 people:
PC gamers who like their old traditional gaming methods
Console gamers who like their new gaming methods

And in most cases, the console gamers have a severe case of inferiority complexes which result in them saying LOL PC MASTER RACE FINALLY GETS WHAT IT DESERVES XDDD!!!!!!

Seriously just back off console gamers.

Yeah, nothing like that experience on Xbox Live where you have no control over what game you actually join, and get to listen to insufferable racist, homophobic 12 year olds and the other dregs of filth that populate the majority of Xbox Live. New flash activision, real gamers want control over the games they play, we don't need you to hold our hands and find our matches for us.

Taking away a smoker's little box o' cancer isn't going to cure their habit. It's just going to piss them off. Likewise, Activision and Infinity Ward may think it's for the better, but let's just see what the sales say when nobody buys MW2 for the computer.

Evil publisher Activision always toyed around with their PC market in the Call of Duty franchise, what with CoD3 not even being released on the franchise's biggest platform. Well guess what? "Casual" gamers don't play computer games. Nobody goes out and builds an expensive gaming rig by accident. PC gamers know what they're getting into, and they are more than capable of understanding a simple server list.

I'll be picking up MW2 for the PS3, thank you very much.

I think everyone missed my point before, A person can not judge whether the will like a game and everything it offers (or limits) or not until they have first hand experience. So I am calling all the PC gamers whiny bitches because it is only the PC gamers doing the whining and the bitching before they know what their experience with the game will be. and a few reactions to my last post just makes the whiny bitch statement seem all to true.

We may not know how MW2 and IWNet will be until we can play it but based on experience with previous games that have used matchmaking there's cause for concern and skepticism. Add in the list of features we know are getting removed and things we are hearing about game performance and it doesn't paint a pretty picture.

•some random coder is gonna make a dedicated server that doesn't require serial number
there u gonna have it... 64 players in a server.

"I just can't believe that the PC gamers are such whiny little bitches, IW has carefully plotted out the best way to deliver the best multi-player experience"

Oh my stars. That comment is pure silliness.

Listen:

IF. YOU. WANT. TO. PLAY. IT. AS. THE. DEVELOPERS. INTENDED. IT. YOU. CAN. REGARDLESS. OF. MODS. AND. DEDICATED. SERVERS.

You ALWAYS could play COD4 the way the developers intended it! THAT IS WHAT FILTERS ARE FOR! I assume you have probably never played a good multiplayer PC game, probably due to a lack of money, but I have, and I can tell you that "delivering the best experience" is not IW or Activision's goal here. Having the ability to alter the game or play on 18+ servers, or you know, play against people who aren't lagging like hell, does not prevent anyone from playing "as it is originally intended".

The only reason why they are doing this is due to sheer laziness. They can't be assed making it different. I can respect that, I'm a lazy bastard myself, and who knows the game might not suffer too much from it. It could still be fun. Plus, this is IW's game and they have a right to do whatever the hell they want with it. They aren't making you buy it you know.

But I don't like lies. If IW came out and said "due to laziness, we have just ported over the console version to the PC and have done has little work on it as possible due to the fact that consoles are our primary focus", I would have shrugged my shoulders and said okay. If they had told us IN ADVANCE about the 18+ player thing, I would have shrugged my shoulders and bought it when the price came down. If they hadn't been sneaky and tried to slip this under the radar and make up bad excuses for their laziness when it came to the PC version (again, nothing wrong with that, it's their game and their money, and I'm a lazy bastard myself), then I wouldn't mind so much.

But they are being sneaky, releasing this bad news close to the release date, when many have already pre-ordered/pre-purchased it. They also jacked up the price, despite including LESS CONTENT (again, there's nothing morally or legally wrong with that, it's their game they get to decide what to put into it). And they are lying. Their goal is not to "provide the best experience". How could taking stuff out possibly provide the best experience? They are just being lazy. They can't be bothered putting in dedicated servers, or allowing for mods or console use or the rest of the stuff because they are being lazy.
