Activision announces plans to revive the Bond franchise photo

The CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, recently announced that the company is fully committed to reviving the James Bond brand. Little does Bobby know that as he uttered these words, thousands of gamers were instantly warped back to a rose-colored era in their lives when they were glued to Golden Eye 24 hours a day. Kotick is more than aware of its legacy though, as reflected in the quotes below:

"Bond is one of the great videogame franchises of all time and that really was a result of Golden Eye," Kotick said at a recent BMO Capital Markets conference.

"I think the key to re-energising the Bond franchise is going to be ultimately the highest possible game quality."

Amen. Kotick expressed that he didn't feel the brand had gotten the focus it deserved in the past from Electronic Arts. Activision secured the rights to the title in 2006, after EA ended its deal with MGM Interactive to make titles based on the films. He says that they have their best development studios working on the project currently.

No matter what words I try to come up with, I feel I can't sum up how exciting this news could potentially be. With the technology at hand today, this could be an absolutely fantastic thing ... or the game could blend into the woodwork. What would it take for you to love a new Bond game as much as you loved Golden Eye?

That's be cool if they were able to bring it back. With ragdoll and the same bloody effect, that'd be too good.

A tank full of man eating sharks* with laser beams on their heads

*mutated sea bass will suffice

I really have high hopes for this game. After playing so much of the glory that is CoD4 since last night and seeing how fun a gritty realistic shooting game can be, I think the new direction the Bond movies have been going would be a great fit for a more realistic shooter but with awesome gadgets.

I feel as though it is VERY James Bond to shoot some poor sap through a wall and that it would make complete sense to include that type of technology and interaction in a new Bond game. The crazy upgrades to weaponry could be carried over to gadgets like wrist watch lasers and stuff. It'd be too cool for school.

Throw in a couple awesome free running-esque chase levels and I'm all over this.

This is exciting news

but honestly

Goldeneye on XBL Arcade please. I'll pay anything and probably give up playing every other game just to play this game online.

There's potential for some great games there, but Goldeneye: Rouge Agent was not the way to go.

Hopefully they can make some more great games out of it.

ZOMG, ZOMG, ZOMG, ZOMG

What would it take for me to love this installment? Remove the Klobb, you couldn't hit a Ricki Lake circa 1986 from 6 feet away with that damn gun.

I don't think I could love anything as much as Goldeneye. Mylor's right, Goldeneye on XBLA would be the best ever.

First of all, get any rights from Rare they need to, so they can make a multiplatform enhanced remake of Goldeneye. Even the DS would work, since it apparently has a better draw distance than the N64.

Take Goldeneye, beef up framerate, perfect controls, maybe tweak the graphics a little bit, add online capabilities, enhance the music, and you have the most perfect multiplayer game around!

Honestly I think goldeneye was more of a right time right place thing than any specific thing that made it 'perfect,' a console multiplayer shooter had simply not been done in any reasonable way at that point. In terms of weapons, levels, execution, it definitely follows the Keep it Simple, Stupid rule. I think for a new game to be loved as much as GoldenEye (and not just for nostalgia's sake) it would have to have some new mechanic, and not just a gimmick, that would put it head and shoulders above the Halo/Call of Duty/Battlefield crowd. A degree of stealth or even 'charm' mechanics, to pull of stylish or inspiring kills would be awesome. Also Wii shooter controls on the level of Metroid Prime 3 would make this a buy for me. I know online multiplayer hasn't been done on a Wii shooter yet, but there's no real good reason it *can't.* Besides, the GoldenEye experience wouldn't be complete if you couldn't screenwatch to see where the other guy is putting his proxy mines.

That hits the nail on the head. Screenwatching mechanics are a must.

Thank god Activion got the license over EA at least. Far more likely to do SOME good with it.

Frickin A. Goldeneye was the best shooter for the N64, and Nightfire was the best shooter for the Gamecube. Here's hoping they make the best shooter for the Wii.

I agree with Twiggy: Charm mechanics would be awesome. It should be more than just another Goldeneye shooter.

Twiggy's post sums it all up very well. The nostalgia factor never lasts long at all, and just a simple derivative of Goldeneye wouldn't be enough to get anyone's attention for more than a week or two.

i have hopes. are they high? nay. i agree with some of the earlier comments - no new Bond game will ever live up to the "right place, right time, right team" Goldeneye 64. it was something NEW that nobody had done right on consoles before. what "NEW" thing can be brought to the console FPS table now? nothing, that's what.

There's an echo in this thread.

And it sounds good, I would be very happy if Infinity Ward worked on it.
