Activision announces Independent Game Competition photo

Activision has announced the first Activision Independent Game Competition, in which the publisher is putting a call out for submissions from indie game developers in the United States.

The contest will allow either individuals or teams to submit either completed or in-development games, the winners taking home cash towards development as prizes. Round one of the competition starts today, and goes through August 31; the first place winner will get $175,000 towards development of their title, with the second place getting $75,000 in assistance. Winners will be announced in October, with details on "round two" being announced at a later date.

The idea, says the publisher, is to "help foster creativity and innovation from rising talent in the independent game development community." Even though it has released some excellent titles over the years, I'm not entirely sure the words "creativity" and "innovation" to the minds of many gamers when thinking of Activision.

Any indie developers out there looking to jump on this opportunity? Think Activision can help make your game a reality?

I don't understand. Did you mean activision? Or did you mean some other company with that actually has values that strengthen the games industry?

You know, I was wondering to myself how Activision was going to find it's next franchise to milk; I guess this is it.

Why in the world would anybody give their ideas away to Activision just so they can hire them on, whore the fuck out of their game, and then fire them without pay and steal their IP? That is, if Activision is even willing to pay an indie developer in the first place. If anyone even does submit anything to this contest, you had better believe that the winner is going to be some stupid pile of shit with "sequel potential".

in the small print of that press release, it states that activision will not be paying any royalties to the developers after they are finished, since they will at that point hire a private security team to walk them off their own project.

This is just like all the art and photo contests. Don't enter unless you want to give up ownership of your work.

If you want a good laugh then read the contract. It basically says that by accepting the prize money you release Activision and every single person affiliated with them from any form of punitive actions should a failure or breach of contract happen on their side. You cannot take your claim as a class action lawsuit and instead must file it individually using the District Court of Michigan. You agree that Activision can force you into interviews and they have the rights to use your submission, name, city, state, and company for all advertisements or future projects now or forever in the future without any form of compensation whatsoever.

Surprisingly enough the project still remains under your control but the gray areas are A) your actual SUBMISSION is now Activision's forever more and B) if anything happens whatsoever in the 8-10 weeks it takes to deliver your $200k you can't do shit about it too bad so sad.

If Activision wants to better it's public image then so be it. Stop criticising the good things they do too.

What kind of crazy indie developer would go anywhere near Activision?

This is uncharacteristic of Activision.
But in a good way, it's encouraging to see they're promoting creativity of smaller developers that may not get funding otherwise.

Let's just hope said developers read the small print a few times.

This type of competition evilness (besides the appalling contract) is nothing more than Spec work. Spec work ruins industries. Say no to Spec work.

Activision has said that they get a first-look deal on the game that is created; they do not immediately own the IP, nor do they own anyone's soul.

I've quoted a recent interview about this here:

http://oneofswords.com/2010/06/independent-games-competition-its-on/

this is a good thing for indie developers. This is free money to make a game and maybe seen it published, through Activision or through any other publisher. I hope we see some good games come out of it.

entrants must "acknowledge" that Activision may make games "similar to the entrant's submission" and must give first right of refusal to Activision for the development or publishing of any submission. '

sounds suspiciously like stealing to me.

If you win, you get to sell your soul to activision, who will no only own the rights to your game, but then don't have to pay you :)

If it can happen to Modern Warfare 2 devs, it can happen toy you!

DO NOT GIVE ACTIVISION YOUR GAME!

They will own the rights to ALL submissions, not just the winners.

Why any indie developer would do that is beyond me. Do not give up your game to Activision for nothing!

@adeveloper: You're absolutely wrong about that. I corrected you on my site, and I'll correct you here too. The IP of the contest entry game remains the property of its creator unless the creator chooses to relinquish it as part of a publishing deal that may or may not take place after the contest concludes.

I explain this in full here, which I've just updated:
http://oneofswords.com/2010/06/independent-games-competition-its-on/

You have misinterpreted the rules of this contest and should stop spreading your mistakes as fact.
