Acid rain of the Capital Wasteland doesn't deter Fallout 3 launch crowd

Standing outside in the rain and cold at Best Buy on Monday night, the crowd of close to 300 was cheery, despite the conditions. The event was the midnight release of Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3, and this particular Rockville, MD location -- the hometown of the game's developer -- was "home base" to similar launches going on around the United States.

The Bethesda development team was out in full force for the event, including lead designer Emil Pagliarulo and executive producer Todd Howard who were signing copies of the game for fans. Fallout 3 posters and other swag was handed out at the event, and those in attendance had a chance to board the now-famous Fallout 3-converted Airstream camper that made its debut at this year's Penny Arcade Expo.

But fans weren't just here for the freebies, with some traveling from as far as New York to pick up their copy of the game and be a part of Fallout history.

"I've been a huge fan of the Fallout series for over ten years," David Fowler, a 34-year-old Washington D.C. attorney who stood in line for three hours told us. "This has been a long time coming, and I have no doubt it's going to be worth the wait."

Check back later this week for our full review of Fallout 3.

I wanted to head out there last night, but the combination of lots of work and gross weather detered me. I'm glad to see it went well.

I will play this after i am done with Fable 2 and GoW2 i never played the other fallout's in the series so i wasn't quick to jump on this one. It does look like it might be fun though that is for sure.

It is kinda cool to actually have a game developer in Maryland. Most of them are on the west coast cause they are weird

@elsteveo

Hey, you've got Bethesda and Firaxis, while we've got Epic and Red Storm here in NC. I'm not entirely sure who wins.

I've already played the game and it's fantastic. It's totally a SciFi-Oblivion version, but I liked this one more because it's SciFi (I got enough of Medieval RPG games).

Man there are just too many good games coming out right now, its hard to keep up (playing Fable II, Saints Row 2Dead Space and Farcry 2 at the moment). Next week I gotta go grab Gears 2, Fallout 3 and then I got Banjo Kazooie 3 to pick up... ergh sooo many games.

It's a good time to be a gamer right now.

I just got the game too (for free. a local radio station was giving out prizes at the midnight launch and my buddy and I won a 200 dollar gift card).

most fun I've had in quite some time.

Yeah... I didn't really feel the need to spend a couple of hours trying to drive to MD then stand around in cold rainy weather, sounds like it was mildly fun anyway. I'll admit that you, Hito, and whoever else went are more hardcore than I.

@Evil Cheese:

I've had the game for two weeks; I went for reporting purposes only! It was fun, though.
