Quantcast

The above video should inspire women all around the world. This bizarre "game" uses a webcam and special boxes, a process known as Augmented Reality, to simulate a virtual girlfriend for you. A girlfriend which is heavily advertised as susceptible to all kinds of physical and mental abuse.

Can you believe it's from Japan? I would NEVER have guessed from hearing the concept.

The "Cyber Figure Alice" doesn't exactly portray women in a, shall we say, progressive light? In fact, the message of this commercial seems to be that if you consistently beat your woman and mess with her head until she's a hopeless, despair-ridden wretch, all it takes is one material gift and she'll instantly forgive you.

So, a pretty realistic portrayal of all women.

[Thanks, Miami Nights]

We, the good people of Japanator, have OBVIOUSLY already covered this months ago.

It's stuff like this that makes me think japanese males must be very lonely.

@Xhumation: Not only are they very lonely, they're extremely desocialized and homebound. This is specifically the market this kind of "game" was made for. It's kinda disgusting, actually...

Wow, not only disgusting, but actually pretty scary. So all you can do with this girl is dress her up, abuse her until she crys and then give her a present so you can start the process all over? If any of these guys ever got their grubby little paws on a real girl I think you can imagine how that will turn out.

Of course they'd have to leave the house for that, so I think we are all reasonably safe.

I don't understand all these "LOL JAPAN I'M SURE THIS WILL LEAD TO RAEP" comments. We facepalm and cynically laugh when someone worries about violence in games and assume the worst about people that believe in the stereotype of adult gamers as lonely neckbearded basement-dwellers, and then react in exactly the same fashion when someone releases something that's little more than a webcam-based PETZ.

I think it's something of a marvel, really. It reacts when you twist it around, commenting about its master's room, moves about when you present it with a virtual present, and yelps when you poke it with a virtual hand. A little creepy, but about as harmless as a window-sitter or those pictures that follow the mouse cursor with its eyes.

Grow up, people.

It's like this whole sex-vs-violence hypocrisy that seems to suffuse the American culture wars. Someone's head getting blown off or a cable show about a serial killer who power-saws people's limbs off, but a boob?! OH NOES.

Not really.

Finding one thing creepy and finding something unrelated not creepy is nothing like hypocrisy.

@unangbankay: I think it is only because you can't really decapitate someone in real life, whereas sex on the other hand is a different thing and something you can get without getting convicted of murder, and also for most people hentai is something that's always going to be *facepalm since if you're going to look at porn you might as well look at something that ain't drawn out of human proportions, but then again i have nothing against whatever fetishes someone has.

Sure enough, finding something creepy as opposed to finding virtual violence normal, but the assumptions being implied by some so far, that the people who thought this up (or those who'd buy it) are as disturbed as real sex offenders or hold the same attitudes towards real women as they might act against a toy are a lot like the attitudes being held by some non-gamers that people play violent video games are school-shooting time-bombs.

@benjaxez

What? Are you reading what you just wrote? You're implying that because sex is legal and obtainable without prosecution, it's more correct to be disturbed by someone's fetish, than it is to be disturbed by a person enjoying virtual murder, since you "can't" attempt to murder people in real life. You also "can't" poke, undress and otherwise harass women.

Our most common argument against video game violence concerns goes along the lines of "the fact that we CAN doesn't mean we WILL". I'd like to think that the same holds true for virtual sex and sex appeal.

Just so you're aware, the logic you're using is the same logic that Jack Thompson & Friends use. "If they do this in video games, then you can bet they'll do it in real life." I'm not defending this game, but I'm just saying, this is something to think about. Is someone who plays this game that much worse or socially reprehensible than someone who enjoys playing bloody, violent games?
