A Wii complaint log photo

Like it or not, the Wii has problems. Whether you want to admit it or continue to live in a state of denial, it does and we should, as gamers, demand these sorts of issues be addressed and discussed. Thankfully, 1UP has put together a nice little rundown of just some of these issues. Agree, disagree, got anything to add?

  • VC Games Tied to Individual Wiis: Want to play a little Bomberman at your friend's house? He's going to have to buy it, or you're going to have to lug your Wii over.
  • Getting Online: If you won't join the wireless age then Nintendo just doesn't want you playing their online games. You know, if they had any.
  • Being Online: Where the PS3 has a lousy, all-over-the-place online scheme with a handful of games trying to make it work, Nintendo seems to have a potentially great online setup with absolutely no games whatsoever taking advantage of it.
  • 20 Hour Battery Life: ... it's the only one this generation that you can't just plug in to a USB port to recharge. You're either going to have to buy a battery charger, or stockpile an assload of AAs.
  • Classic Controller: ... you have to plug the bastard into your Wiimote, further contributing to the flood of AAs going to battery heaven.
  • No Pack-in Component Cables: At this point we're still just relieved that Wii even supports it, but it's yet another expense on top of an already big pile of stuff.
  • Not Region Free: Once upon a time this might have been a lot to ask, but after the DS, PSP, PS3 and to some extent the 360 all let us play imports it's something we've come to expect.
  • Weak Wrist Strap: ... you'd think they'd have made one that wouldn't break if you stare at it too hard.
  • Short Sensor Bar Cord: It's just a shame that there isn't a longer cord, a wireless option, or hell, if the thing isn't actually communicating with the Wii why can't we just plug it into the wall?
  • Mii Shortcomings: They don't have ears! How the hell are we supposed to make unflattering caricatures of the president?

If we gonna compare the PS2 and Cube I just gonna count the games I've have for both systems....It's a close call be the cube is the winner here, the Dreamcast is the real winner. I had more ps2 games but sold a bunch because I lost interest in them after 3 hours of playing. Talk about waste of money.

Let's not start worrying too much about the number/quality of titles for EITHER system for the first six months to a year. It's launch people. The games are coming, and most of the ones we've seen so far were probably rushed a bit. (Barring maybe Twilight Princes & Resistance: Fall of Man) Remember how PS1 had crap at launch, and N64 had arguably the best platformer ever made? Things change, and it's WAY to early to start with the "ZOMG PS3/Wii DOOMED!!! I TOLD YOU ALL ALONG!!!" stuff.

Wait... wait... so when there are articles about the PS3 and all the problems it has, it's all "Give them time. It's unfair to bash a console that has just been released. It has potential to be cool. Just wait and see."

But when there's an article about the Wii and all the problems it has, it's all "See? The Wii does suck, after all!"

It's not the fact that both the Wii and PS3 obviously have problems that bothers me. It's the hypocrisy in the coverage of the one over the other that has always bothered me. Again, why is it okay to point out the problems of the Wii in a straight-forward manner, as was done in this post (despite the usual and unnecessary Summa dig at Nintendo fans at the beginning of it), yet when someone does the same for the PS3, it's time to bring out the pitchforks and lynch the so-called "idiot"?

I've got three Wii titles I'm enjoying right now. Trauma Center, RedSteel, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I perfer the Wii control scheme for UA, and RedSteel is a fun little game. I'm not calling it god or the devil, just a fun title I can play for an hour or two. Trauma Center is just ridiculously good.
I'm pretty comfortable with buying my Wii at launch. It's probably going to be the last system race all over again. Playstation will be mostly weaksauce for 8 months to a year, but then it will have triple A titles available nowhere else. I bought my Wii first because it has what I want to play on it right now. I'll get a PS3 when Sony convinces me it's worth it. I was let down by Metal Gear Solid 4 trailers as well as the previews for Devil May Cry 4, but there's still plenty of time to turn things around.
Side note about the Wii = First Party only stuff floating around, bandai/namco is slated for thirty Wii titles, and EA recently portioned a studio tasked with creating Wii titles. With the high cost of doing business with Sony, I wouldn' be surprised at all if we saw much more third party support for the Wii this time around.
Well, enough rambling.
Although I've gotta say, what self respecting geek doesn't have rechargable double A batteries at this point?

Are you serious? Normally the double standard is AGAINST Sony. Unless you're being seriously insecure and having the constant need to ensure others that the Wii is a perfect console. It's not. Neither is the PS3, and lots of people are bashing it too. Maybe you need to get out into the sunshine more. ;)

For the Wii, how did that "strong lineup" become this mess of games? Remember guys, see how Ubisoft's "Full support" turned out to be releasing letdown after letdown- the most enjoyable being Red Steel, which was IMO above average only?

I do not trust the third parties. They seem to be having the mentality of liking the Wii just because you can release crap on it and others will still buy it-ENOUGH to make a profit, even it isn't big- like the portable turd-ish games.

I sure hope more and more studios would be efficient yet churning great games. Gears of War currently tenfolds its development budget- testament of hype+quality (which often leads to hype) goes. We'll see if a non-Nintendo party manages to sell the highest number off Wii games- that'd be an accomplishment. I say it would be almost impossible- till this date, polish and refinement of third-party games on the Wii is still largely an afterthought, and I doubt it will change.

Ouch:
As I said, I freely acknowledge that both the Wii and the PS3 have problems. Neither are perfect consoles. But, no, I guess I'm just a rabid, mindless Nintendo fanboy.

That was not my point at all. My point was that most of the time when there is bad news about the PS3, Summa tends to sweeten it up and make like it's not as bad as it is, pleading for moderation and the need to wait, because, gosh darn, the PS3 can be something if people would just give it a chance. And he calls the purveyors of such bad tidings "idiots" and compares them to journalistic frauds. But when there is bad news about the Wii, he holds it up and pounds it with his index finger, shouting to the world how he was right all along. When there's good news about the Wii, it's "fanboy" this or "masturbatory Nintendo" that. And just about any article that even mentions Nintendo contains some disparaging comment about people who *gasp* may happen to like Nintendo, either thinly veiled or blatant. But, no, I guess I'm just a rabid, mindless Nintendo fanboy.

I have no problem with bad things or good things being reported about either of the consoles. It's the smarmy fanboyish attitude that gripes my ass, especially when Summa is the one who's constantly and hypocritically complaining about Nintendo fanboys. This has been pointed out again and again by many, ad nauseam. But, no, I guess I'm just a rabid, mindless Nintendo fanboy.

I would be just as annoyed with it if it were the Wii he was splooging all over and the PS3 he was reaming with a cattle prod all the time. But, no, I guess I'm just a rabid, mindless Nintendo fanboy.

Fuck it. It's just not worth it. I'm just going to go back to my policy of not reading anything by Summa that happens to contain the words "Nintendo", "Wii", "fanboy", "Sony", or "PS3". Everyone involved would be better off. You'll all be spared my rants, and I'll be spared the asinine anti-fanboyism.

Also, this.

Why wasn't this posted right alongside the Nintendo article? The link was right there at the bottom of the Wii page.

The reason I said there wasn't going to be anything but franchise garbage on the PS3 is because companies will have to sell 500,000 copies at least to make a profit. Companies will go for sure things, which are FRANCHISES and LICENSED GAMES. Anything new will be a much bigger risk than on any other console making the PS3 a liability.

@ Im OK:

I've been saying that for a while. It's a question of journalistic integrity. Summa was the one who very publicly (on Kotaku) said,"The PS3 will be first again. Prove me fucking wrong," I did, and got nothing back. Then there was the Metro column. However, when Summa was sent his Wii, he couldn't help but gush - after all, gotta keep the free-sh*t trains coming into that station, eh? I'll bet that's the clipping that's sent to Golin Harris, not the 32,768 other ones. My wife's in the tech industry as well. The PR firms do keep track of what all journos say, and even what their preferences seem to be. Not to worry; I've seen the swag flow slow down to a trickle when someone starts ragging on a company. It's only a matter of time.

I was told that there's a filter coming that will allow you to ignore posts by certain authors.

I'm not ignorant and saying that the Wii doesn't have problems, in fact it is the most bug ridden Nintendo launch ever. I think it's good to keep in mind that the bugs can be worked out and Nintendo is working them out. A PS3 that overheats and is expensive to develop for can't be fixed with a patch. I would like to challenge one of your comments and that is about developer support. Trauma Center, Madden, Monkey Ball and Rayman are all very good launch titles, and none of these are made by Nintendo. In fact, Rayman is made by Ubisoft whom is being criticized by releasing nothing but crap for the Wii (I will, however, cut my own hand off before calling GT racing, 4x4 or Red Steel great games, though). The fact that these games are selling out fast (and I know this as I currently work at retail) is a good sign to developers to bring more games to the Wii, as it already is shedding some of it's previous developer issues.

And yes, the Wii does have more problems than you're suggesting. The fact that it can only connect to the internet completely on a wireless connection using channel 1 and 11 is inconvenient to say the least, and the controller configuration for the Wii controller on genesis games is piss poor. That's all I can think of right this second, but I know there's more. The Wii may not be the second coming of Jesus, but it's more than enough to give some optimism for the console's future.

Im OK: You can't post that PS3 garbage here! Haven't you heard the news?? Anyone who isn't fanatically critical of Nintendo has their head shoved so far up Reggie's ass, that they can't see the truth! Come on people... Quit fellating Sony and M$(The classics never die). Some of the issues raised by 1Up are legitimate. My big gripe is the fact that the VC downloads are tied to the console, not the person like MS does with Live. That is disappointing, but if something happens to your Wii, I'm sure Nintendo has a workaround for it. But no, sadly, anyone who is remotely positive on Nintendo must be an idiotic, manchild, Nintendo Fanboy.... What happened Rob?? Just a couple of weeks ago you were pretty high on Wii, now you're back to being the old "Wii is a gimmicky joke that no one wants to develop anything but Nick Jr games for" Robert Summa. I really hope Nintendo will iron out some of the issues they have right now, which I believe they will. If not, then the have only themselves to blame.... For the rest of you haters: while I'm enjoying some fun and immersive games, have fun with Riiiiiidge Raaaaceeerr!!! Oh, and make sure you get that massive damage in too! (You see what I did??)

Summa, anyone who reads your articles with anything regarding Wii or Nintendo can see obviously that you are biased. You obviously do not like this new movement and change in gaming that is definitely coming. Regardless of your disdain for Nintendo's philosopy and style, your articles are going to do little to change people's mind. People who like Nintendo's style of gaming are going to like the system and enjoy it, regardless of any of your writings. Also, your negative views on the Wii are actually in the minority as it is getting quite a buzz in the media. It is selling well, and in general many people think the Wii has a great launch lineup. Aside from that, all the critiques you have about not having 3rd party support are a little premature. There may be games coming up in the pipeline that could blow your socks off. Online games haven't even been revealed yet, as well as a number of channels. Why don't we wait for 6 months and see the lineups, and also see what Nintendo has in store online for us before we make any opinions about that. In any case, I realize you like writing these kind of articles, and it generates a lot of traffic, and arguments. But if Sony and PS3 is so great, why don't you spend more time enlightening us on what's so great about them, instead of always trying to prove to people why Nintendo sucks? It seems like the majority of your articles are doing just that, mostly in an indirect way.
