A slick solution to the instrument compatibility conundrum photo

While the photo above was probably taken from inside of Nick Chester's house (photo actually from Shaun McInnis' blog), that collection of plastic instruments could be any of ours. Even if you only buy one music game a year, the peripherals start to add up and before you know it, boom, you have no space left to sleep in your apartment.

And then there's the issue of compatibility, which is always a pain to figure out. The folks at Harmonix know this, and they have a solution for us. The developer has put up a lovely compatibility chart for the various instrument types and platforms that appear on which you can view here.

Notice how Harmonix isn't afraid to specify its competitors' products on its Web site. We dig that attitude. Would the words "Rock Band" ever show up on the official Guitar Hero site? Probably not.

Actually, I think I saw a similar chart last Winter on a Guitar Hero site, specifically mentioning their superior Rock Band brethren.

Very nice, but nothing surprising here for 360 owners: pretty much everything works with everything except Rock Band guitars with Guitar Hero II/III. There's no support for Rock Revolution drums because I'm sure no one bought the game. For PS2, PS3, and Wii owners though, this should be really helpful.

Ha, what a pile of crap! Glad I hate rhythm games. Only add on I really need is a flight stick but that has been yrs ago. All the good flight sims have died or are on the same schedule of new consoles.

I'm so glad I don't play rythym games like Rock band anymore. Now I just play real instruments...which take up the same if not more amount of space lol.

GameStop is no longer taking guitars on trade starting Tuesday. It is only time before they stop taking the microphones too.

CWal37 - you were right. All I did was go to guitar hero's site and look. This pdf document has been around for a long time. seems it gets updated, not sure who made it, but it's a link on the main site. http://cdn.guitarhero.com/ghhub/GHWT_compatibility.pdf

Yeah I've seen these charts around for a while. I'm sure they're helpful to more than a few people.

Just for the record, that chart has been around for I think the better half of a year.

Wow. That Mike Portnoy edition drum set is WAY cooler than the Aly & AJ edition guitar at my Best Buy.

Activision did this months ago. Kinda late for Harmonix to do this now.

Something I never liked is that I can't use my RB2 or my GH3 guitars for GH2, which I no longer have the guitar for. GH2 is my favorite out of any of them, so I hope someone can figure out how to change this.

Fuck cross-game compatibility, why aren't all Rockband instruments compatible with all versions of Rockband? All four consoles it's been released for have USB ports, all of them have roughly the same button requirements, and yet the only ones that are the same are the PS2 and PS3 versions.

Probably 60& of the money you paid for the went to the cost of the instruments instead of the actual game.

Awesome. I was wondering if my Wii GHWT set would work with Beatles RB. Probably the most useful thing a game website has ever been used for.
