A recording of the fatal Wii Wee contest

6:33 PM on 01.22.2007, Niero 44 comments

     Podcasts

You know the story -- a radio station's Wee for a Wii water drinking contest left Jennifer Strange dead from water poisioning.
The contestant's possible deaths were discussed by both the hosts and callers and shrugged off with chuckles about waivers.  Click the YouTube video above to listen to the most important segments of the show. Disgusting. At the very least they were fired. We can only hope a band of pirates kidnaps them and drowns them at sea: The only fitting end for this collective of Wiitards.

Sad fucks, some woman calls to tell that it's dangerous, they answer something like, it's ok they can just throw up when it's to much. At least it going to court kinda obvious that that would happen.

I gotta say I agree with Johnny Wadd here. If I give you 10 bucks to jump off of a bridge, am I held accountable? No. So why is this any different?

I feel bad for everyone involved, family and the radio station, everyones life is pretty much ruined for quite some time. But man that DJ is retarded "If the body gets to the point where they are gonna throw up then they will throw up before they die" If that was true how has anyone ever died of water intoxication? Thats like saying someone won't die of Alcohol poisoning because they will always throw up first, well sometimes people don't throw up, thats why people have died of alcohol poisoning

10 people were fired along with the DJs, so it's a group fault thing. Nintendo is reportedly also named in the suit; who knows how many people thought this was a good idea

It's NOT the same as paying someone to jump off a bridge because most people don't know that drinking too much water can be fatal. If I didn't know better I would believe their claims that I would just throw up if it got too bad.

Notice that assisted suicide still counts as murder even if the person dying signs a waver. They are responsible to provide a reasonable measure of safety even if they're making the person sign a waver.

Johnny: I would have agreed with you if didn't hear the audio. But the DJ's admitted that they should have researched it more and one of them even referenced another case where something like this happened and they just brushed it off. So any sympathy I had for the DJ's is gone now. Both the Station and DJ's should be held accountable for what happened.

I do agree that the contestants are at fault as well. But they weren't the ones running this contest...

Agreed with the few up there. ABOVE ALL it's the idiot contestant's fault for even signing up for the moronic fuckbag contest that did ensue. The DJs are merely getting what they want: idiot people that they can feed off their their ratings. Don't sign up, and they won't get it. Sucks that she's dead, but, but she should have had more common sense. *shrug*

@Johnny Wadd:

Water intoxication has nothing to do with not going to the bathroom. Drinking too much water causes your body's electrolytes to become diluted. That's why sports drinks and Pedialyte include sodium and potassium.

The people holding this contest had a responsibility to make sure their contestants were not placed in physical danger. Saying it's all the woman's fault is just ignorant. The radio station didn't do their research, gave the participants the impression this stunt wouldn't be dangerous, and as a result this woman died. They deserve to be sued. Putting Nintendo into the lawsuit is probably just a case of the lawyers trying to go after the deepest pockets.

I think the case really boils down to what the waiver said, and until then, I can't really assign to much blame. I still maintain that, ultimately, the woman signed up, of her own volition. She is as responsible for her own safety (and that includes water poisoning) as anyone else.

As far as this tape is concerned, it's their job to be funny, to be irreverant, to be entertaining. Yes, they're retarded and aren't taking themselves seriously -- and that's exactly what they're being paid to do.

It's all fun and games until someone dies of water intoxication, I guess.

Everyone involved in this was flat out retarded. If Nintendo and/or Justin Timberlake's people knowingly endorsed this crap (which I personally kind of doubt, but wouldn't bet against it), then yes, they should indeed be a part of any lawsuit as well.

But, on the other hand, like Orcist said, it depends on what the waiver said. If it explicitly said something along the lines of "BEWARE AND FEAR FOR THY LIFE, FOR YEA VERILY, WHILST THOU MAYEST WIN YON NINTENDO WII, THOU MAYEST ALSO CERTAINLY DIE LIKE A STUPID FUCKING RETARD BECAUSE, HONESTLY, DRINKING AN ASS-TON OF WATER IS AN INCREDIBLY BAD IDEA" and they still went along with it anyway, then what can you do? However, after listening to that audio, and the DJs talking about how they should have done more research first, and such bullshit, I'll go out on a limb and guess that the waiver probably wasn't all that detailed.

Those DJ, deserve to be whipped and beaten I am sorry. When jen mentions somebody said this is dangerous, they laugh it off and respond, "who said that? The intern?". In other words don't listen to him keep amusing us with your pain. Next did they even offer to take them to a medical facility? Or did they say just throwing up in the back is cool?

Legally, and morally in my opinion, the DJ's and everybody else running the contest are to be held accountable, even with the shoddy waivers they probably had out.

ANYONE who says that the DJ's and radio station shouldn't be held accountable for this is a horrible person (I've written waaaay too much on one of the wired blogs about this regard).

The fact the contestant willingly chose to drink that water is irrelevant; the radio station provided both the water AND the incentive to drink it. It wasn't the victims choice alone, it was very much also the individuals at the radio station's choice as well.

I read that the waivers had nothing to do with health risks and that it was more of a "we're allowed to put you on the air and use your image" type of thing. The same crap in the fine print when you enter contests at McDonalds or wherever the popular spot to win stuff is nowadays.

I'm on the waiver bandwagon. If the waiver said something to the effect of "Danger of death due to water poisoning" then I think the station is responsible.

Some people gotta show a teeny bit of sympathy sometimes. Shit, this was just some young mom that wanted to win a Wii for her kids. Now she's gone. That's fucking sad, and the lack of humility of those douche dj's and tons of peeps and the internet sucks ass.

Here's a list of people you should trust ahead of DJs.

-- Circus clown
-- Pro wrestler
-- Starbucks barista
-- Crackhead
-- Senile person
-- Senile person on crack
-- Bill O'Reilly
-- Used car salesman
-- Telemarketer
-- Meth dealer
-- Sandwich artist
-- Any person who tells you he is Jesus, Napoleon, or Elvis
-- Courtney Love
-- Lawyer
-- Pimp
-- Ho
-- Person in fast food restaurant mascot costume
-- Concessionaire at local cineplex
-- That guy at the intersection wearing the sandwich board sign that says "all mattresses 50% off"

If you rely on any of the above people for safety, health, career, education, or any advice of any substantive nature, you are officially stupid.

Do you need someone to offer you a waiver that says don't swallow a boat oar?

Don't skateboard with a butcher's knife in your coat pocket?

Don't play hacky-sack with a hedge clipper?

Ride on the inside of the bus and not underneath?

Don't kiss a feral dog with bacon in your mouth?

WHAT?!

Lezbro, take it easy. I know you are perfect. You never make mistakes, never had a drink and drove your car, never smoked pot, never had unprotected sex. I know, you probably never did ANYTHING that involved any type of negative consequence.

Like in the America bashing, 1000 post topic, you're taking it too far. Do you go outside your fucking house? Do you live your life? People, every day, do far worse things than drink too much water. And live. This woman drank water and died.

I'm sure you could tell us exactly what the limit is for water intake for a human right Lezbro? What is the water to body weight threshold? Sure if you intake too much of anything, you could die. But unless someone told me, I probably wouldn't believe that I could die from drinking the amount of water they were giving me. I'd probably suspect that I would have to drink ten times that amount before I died.

I mean, you keep coming off like such a know it all. "Don't listen to these people....." Who the fuck are you? Why should we listen to anything you have to say? Christ man, not everyone in this world is as knowledgeable and perfect a human as you. They make mistakes, they enter contests to drink water. God forbid someone I love dies of cancer. Would I say to myself "Well, they deserved it because they chose to eat all those processed foods when they were a teen , and that eventually formed the nucleus of the cancer that killed them." No.

A person made a choice to enter this contest. Did she know the dangers of water poisoning? Probably not. Should they have warned her? Yes.

It's people like Lezbro who are so far out of touch with reality they make me want to cry.

The bottom line is that the most important thing in life/society/love/etc. ISN'T being responsible for yourself; it's about being responsible for others.

The radio station is and should be responsible for it's guests. The fact the victim willingly participated is irrelevent; the radio station handed her a lethal amount of water and told her to drink it if her kids wanted that Wii so damn badly.

They (the radio station, to make it clear to Lezbro) failed in their responsibility. They (still the radio station Lezbro) should be punished for this.

Lezbro..Orcist..they have pretty much summed up my opinion here.

I'm sorry for the family, and I'm sorry the lady passed away. But you trust radio DJ's to be experts in anything other than the job they do? And yes...that waiver should , I would think, obsolve any responsibility of anyone other than the party that chose to drink herselve into a watery oblivion. that alone should set off a personal alarm saying.."gee..this could be risky". then again...shouldn't the idea of holding your urine in your body until you possibly cant kinda, oh, i don't know, say something about the risks of such a contest?

and hell...she was feeling ill, thought enough to call and tell people, but didn't seek treatment?

seriously, where has personal responsibility gone?

tactless behaviour of the DJ's? probably. but as Orcist said, it's their job. they're not doctors, they're not scientists, their job is to ham up the contest and draw attention to it. they're not there to think for your own personal safety...that's YOUR JOB.

it's just a shame for all parties involved.

Anything in large amounts is dangerous to the human body no matter what it is.They really really should have put research into this, and to be honest the radio people getting fired is the least that could happen to them,
Really heartbreaking hearing them joke about it as it went on as well.
