A port of GoldenEye 007 still doesn't seem likely photo

The chance of a GoldenEye 007 revival via Xbox LIVE Arcade or Virtual Console appears no more feasible now than it was around a year ago. Speaking in response to a fan question about a port coming to either of those two downloadable platforms, a representative of Rare responded, largely, in the negative.

That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we're long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere … probably.

Licensing issues, naturally, have played a huge part in the still unfolding GoldenEye 007-to-downloadable-platforms drama. In August 2008, Rare’s Nick Burton said the problems weren’t on his studio’s end, rather, it was all Activision -- the license holder. "The ball's not in anybody at Rare's court, really," he said. “It's squarely in the license holders' court. It's a shame. It's kind of locked in this no man's land. There's nothing on LIVE Arcade, there's nothing on Wii."

At least Perfect Dark is coming, right?

You could play the N64 version. Or Goldeneye Source for free.

Anyway Goldeneye wasn't that great of a game.

But it was made. I know it. Someone I know from the internet told me about it. That it was on a thing that rhymes with "FARTNER GET."

And MILLER BRIN KINK TREE is also coming out.

Well I heard Perfect Dark manged to age better than GoldenEye 007. Yes, its a great game, but with what we got now, it is not THAT enjoyable. comparing with halfLife 2 would be overkill tho. But what I love is the way you go through misions, more games should have that.

Perfect Dark should be fine, as I vaguely remember it being Goldeneye 1.5 anways. Besides, who'd want to play Goldeneye now? Time has not been kind to it...

@Sasserman

So are you still playing it today?

well.. I am pretty shure if Nintendo let Perfect Dark slide onto 360, I am shure that 007 is not going to be on the 360.

It will however be on the Wii's VC cause they have been working things out for the last 3 years to get 007 on the wii.

Plus nintendo owns all the rights to 007 64, exsept a James Bond Licence.

thats right RARE has no right to 007 what so ever cause nintendo Developed + Published it Bitches

I had a pile of old and new systems hooked up while throwing a Labor Day barbecue, and Goldeneye was the game of choice. I personally never liked the MP aspect of the game, but to my friends it's an absolute blast.

I always loved Perfect Dark, but I tried to play campaign a few weeks ago, and the framerate absolutely made me cringe. Happily waiting on the XBLA release.

Is polishing that position still available? What's this, 2002?

@Clarke

Not in the last couple of months, but I mean, I have had it for about 10 years.

Did a full playthrough in like April or something...

*slaps you in the face* BLASPHEMY!

Respect your elders! Before you were T-Bagging, calling each other n-bombs and whatever the hell else you halo kiddies do nowadays there was GoldenEye, which singlehandedly PAVED THE WAY for your Mister Chef guy.

And yes, I am fully aware of Wolfenstein 3D, but GoldenEye was a console revolution.

On topic: He didn't say an outright "NO!" *still holds hope that Big-N and Big-M will get their shit straightened out with WarnerBros*

Goldeneye actually has very little to do with the movie. It's more like a generic version of the movie blended up with random madness (Baron Samedi out of nowhere!).

Here's what I suggest, Rare; change the names of all the characters and levels, and alter the plot so the whole thing is like a parody of Bond movies. Keep the weaponry, maps, and basic flow, but go nuts with it, No One Lives Forever style.

Best of both worlds. We get the game, you don't have to deal with the copyright issues.

I'd really like a Downloadable version of Goldeneye for Wii or Xbox 360. This is sad news for me.

You Halo-humping Call of Duty-sucking twelve year olds are probably too young to know this, but Goldeneye was THE console multiplayer shooter back in its day. I'd love to see a remade version with HD graphics come to the 360, but of course, that probably won't happen anytime soon due to fucking Activision.

I'm fairly impressed by the PSN digital download store. Plus if your PS3 is backwards compatible (I'm betting it is, since you said its long-neglected) then just hit up web-based online merchants for super great deals on old used PS1&2 games.

Your drive tray face looks like it's been melted. Also, gamestop/eb, doesn't look for hardcore gamers who love video games more than their family. They look for people who are going to do their job right, and not steal from the company. In my interview with GS they didn't ask me if I played games until after they told me I could manage the store.

Dude, seriously? Why can't we move on from 007? It wasn't that good of a shooter. Well, except for the story. And the weapons. And the multiplayer maps. Oh man, this one time I was playing Slaps Only....ok, point taken.

I played Goldeneye for the first time a year ago with a bunch of my cousins who had discovered a cartridge at a garage sale. They too had started playing it a few months earlier for the first time and swore to me it was the greatest thing ever.

It wasn't even close.

A shame, really. The game could benefit from a rock solid framerate and dual-analog (or Wiimote-driven) controls. As it is, the game is a bit of a nostalgic mess.

Goldeneye was the game your rich friend who had an N64 bought. Perfect Dark was the game your poor friend rented. Nostalgia has rendered both these games enjoyable which they were...years ago.

None of this matters as they still have not released Earthbound on the Virtual Console.
