This past weekend, over 150 students of Parsons New School of Design broke up in to 19 teams for the LittleBigPlanet Design Jam. The goal? Design and build an original playable level for Media Molecule's upcoming PlayStation 3 title LittleBigPlanet using the in-game creation tools provided. The catch? Do it in 24 hours.

The students worked from noon Saturday to noon Sunday, functioning on nothing but soda, Red Bull, pizza, and their own creativity. The results were revealed at an awards ceremony that was held yesterday at Parsons, with the winner -- Team Good Sportsmanship for their Shadow of the Colossus-inspired design -- taking home $1,000.

Speaking with some of the students, they were all impressed with the built-in design tools Media Molecule is offering for LBP. While some remarked that they had to get pretty creative in their use of things like textures (they were also able to import their own by way of the PlayStation Eye), everyone enjoyed the amount of freedom it offered. Nearly all of the students I spoke with wanted to get their hands on the game when it's released this October ... but most didn't have PS3s.

It was also announced during the awards ceremony that all of the levels designed by the students would be shared at the game's launch, in a "Parsons City" area of the game. For you wannabe LBP designers, that means one thing: the bar's already been set high. Time to get creative.

All of those levels looked really cool especially the washing machine one, the last level reminded me of a 3D version of Line Rider.

@Justice:

Yeah, all of them were a blast to play. In such a short amount of time, they did some really great things. From a gameplay perspective, some were really difficult to play, but with some tweaking (and more than 24 hours) I can only imagine the stuff people are going to come up with.

Sweet jesus, I must have a PS3...I don't think I ever recognized the creative potential of this game until now.

Shit son.

Am i the only one who thinks this game doesn't look like much fun? I mean the viduals are really cool and all and the level designer looks cool. But for me it reminds me of spore....good creation, poor gameplay.

With that in mind...i'm all about gameplay.

This footage isn't really indicative of how it plays, really. Not everyone knew what they were doing. Hands-on, though, it feels really tight. Trust me. I haven't played any of "story" levels designed by Media Molecule, but there's something like 10 hours of gameplay including "bosses." The gameplay is NOT poor from what I could tell. If you like platformers, you're going to be really happy, I think.

I believe i have seen story gameplay. And it didn't particularly facinate me. I might be the minority here though.

Good to hear Nick! From this footage everyone seemed pretty terrible at jumping anywhere. Less than a month away!

I tried to watch it but a stonking great advert scrolled up the picture and blocked it, then took me to a competition site when I tried to get rid of it :( It keeps happening.

Nah, I was basing my comment on all of the gameplay vids I've seen. It all just looks like a frustrating multiplayer platformer. Lots of awkward moments waiting for your uncoordinated friend to finally jump over the electric spikes or deadly giant peach or ... whatever the fuck.

So, what great ideas am I suppose to be seeing here? Looks like the same stuff they've been showing since the beginning. Looks about as tedious to make as it is to play. Couldn't tell what levels were which... it was that impersonal.

And wow at the Shadow of the Colossus one winning. I saw a video of that on another game site and it was depressingly boring, tedious, and uninspiring. Same physics junk, same floatiness, same puzzles, same obstacles, etc etc etc.
