A new Dreamcast game, Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles photo

The newest and quite possibly the last Dreamcast game Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is slated for release in late August or early September this year. According to the game’s official website, W&W is a puzzle game with a “balance of strategy and action” that will satisfy the hardcore and casual enthusiast alike.

The packaging for the title has recently been finished, and will include a manual in both Japanese and English. The basic premise of the title is to match up similar colored blocks in the largest increments as possible. Players will rove around on a world map completing various levels and fulfilling story parameters along the way. It’s like Puzzle Quest, minus riding worms and fighting castles. There are also several different mini-games to experience along the way to break up the monotony of puzzle missions.

Below, we provided a bunch of screenshots from the developer Yuan Works that are available on their page. If you’re intrigued and still have a Dreamcast lying around, you can even download a demo before you buy. Seeing all this really reminds me of how much I miss playing my Dreamcast. What do you guys think?

I forgot to say, that character looks a lot like Link from Wind Waker.

Is this like a neverending joke? "Feet of Fury: Last dreamcast game ever!" "Wind and Water: Last dreamcast game ever!" Is there some random company that just releases games every year on the dreamcast to gain recognition?

Oh, so I'm not the first person whose first thought was "Isn't that Wind Waker Link?" And then the title is W&W. Erase that W, and what do you get? A CONSPIRACY!

I want to play this badly. My dreamcast needs a new game already, damnet.

So is this coming on an actual GD-ROM, or a CD? I thought Sega halted GD-ROM production within the last year or two.

So Dreamcast is considered retro now?

It's nice to see developers that are confident enough in their game to release a demo. I'll give it a shot.

I know I'm going to get blasted for this but, what's the point really? I mean I could understand if the game was coming out on loads of platforms and they just threw in a dreamcast port for the few hundred sales, but really this is just a waste of time and energy for a games developer.

Well, it is out for another platform - GP2X. :P

I don't know much about it, but if it was made for the NAOMI hardware then it's supposedly a really simple task to port it to DC, so a minimal amount of work for a margin of more money.

Also, Isn't DUX supposed to some out after this? So it really dosen't have much of a chance for the coveted "Last Dreamcast Game" crown...

I'm not aroused by the screenshots at all. I don't like the idea of this being a send-off for a great console. It spear-headed online gaming! Yeesh.

I flap my gums about it in my latest blog post. Shameless plug: http://fuzzypickles.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/last-great-am/

Yeah DUX is coming out at the end of August. I should know; I wrote about it.

I think games on older systems can be successful as long as they are marketed properly. There are plenty of good Atari 2600 homebrews out there; why can't independent publishers make good games for DC? The fan base is there and the cost of production is significantly less.

I play my Dreamcast about once every 2 months. I do miss it. But this game isn't doing it for me. Maybe I need to get a new eye exam, but this publisher's graphics appear 16-bit, maybe 32-bit. "Soul Caliber" was proof that the DC could handle some impressive graphics.

I like it. It would be cool if Sega released the SDK for the dreamcast for free. It would turn a system long past into the ultimate homebrew machine. They have nothing to lose on it.

Not like it isn't already a thriving homebrew machine...

If you want to play it and you happen to be on the Games Convention in Leipzig, come to the Redspotgames Booth (Hall 2 Booth H22). They are the Publisher.

@heyricochet: Yes there is. Redspotgames. They also released Last Hope, a r-type like shooter in 2007, for the Dreamcast.

@A New Challenger: It's on CD, since the Dreamcast can read those without any problems.

And for all who care, it was originally released for the GP2x and the Dreamcast version is a port of that, with extra content, like a new character.

Hi, thank you for the news! I'm Yuan-Hsi Chiang, one of the developers of the game. First of all I'd like to say that there is no (intended) connection with Zelda. The original name of the game is in Japanese/Chinese, and "Feng Shui" literally means Wind and Water. And we have not stated that this will be the "last Dreamcast game", or that we plan to make the Dreamcast swan song.

As for choosing this release, the market is very different in Asia, especially Japan, where a late Dreamcast release like "Karasu" in 2007 outsold many DS and PS2 games in several stores. The game however, has also been very well received on this side of the world as well (not the target market), and was nominated at this year's GDC 2008 (Game Developer's Conference) as an IGF Award finalist.

I hope that clears some things up! Again, thanks for the post! Hope some of you here have a chance to try the game if you're interested!
