I clearly just don’t get RuneScape. Some time ago, at the insistence of a younger cousin (who played the free MMO religiously), I gave the game a shot, and was subsequently unimpressed. Maybe my standards were just set too high, used to the level of quality in higher-profile MMOs that come attached with a monthly fee.
Well, despite whatever kept me from getting into it, there seem to be a lot of people that did. The Guinness Book of World Records has determined RuneScape to be the world’s largest free-to-play MMORPG.
Player numbers released by developer Jagex show that there are over one million paying subscribers, and another five million playing for free. In addition, they also claim that over 138 million people have tried the game since launch. Damn, those are some pretty impressive numbers!
Have you ever tried RuneScape before? If so, what did or did not keep you coming back for more?

I don't play it any more, though, since I don't have enough time (partly because I play Maple Story instead. Wonder Boy pwns, and a Wonder Boy MMO pwns more.)
And maybe it's just me but if 138,000,000 people tried my game and less than 5% stuck I'd be disappointed with myself.
In that order.
I just wish the idiots would get out of Guild Wars. Can't go into one of the main trade districts without finding someone offering their crap level XX runescape account for a guildwars account
I love you and agree deeply, I would even go as far to say that deserves at least 11 records. (That's ridiculous. It's not even funny.)
I liked Runescape... Until I tried downloadable MMOs. The thing about Runescape is it too userfriendly, at times I wondered how the community could breath and click the mouse at the same time?
So i stopped playing but return every so often a mine 20 coal then go play a real game.
