Killer is fed

Food is good. Videogames are good. Food inspired by videogames are doubleplusgood. It's simple science. Science and art. The third episode of Steven Hansen's À la cartridge is inspired by Killer is Dead. In my quest to become the Alton Brown of videogames, will I become videogames' Guy Fieri?

After last week's vegetarian reprieve, Pasta di Pikmin, we're taking a return to meat with the Killer is Dead-inspired Mondo Burger. Grasshopper's new game dropped yesterday and a lot of you are really interested in it, if yesterday's exploded comment section on my feature is any indication.

I invite you to take a break from that madness and, Killer Instead, cook yourself something nice. This is a simple, powerful burger with some teeth to it. The full recipe is below.

Killer is fed.

Mondo Burger

Ingredients:

  • ⅗ lb short rib

  • ⅗ lb brisket

  • ¾ lb chuck

  • salt, pepper
  • 1/2 cup ketchup

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon wasabi

  • 2 red bell peppers
  • 2 white onions

Makes about 6 burgers.

Instructions:

Prepare toppings. Roast bell peppers in the oven at 420 degrees Fahrenheit, flipping occasionally, until they're soft and charred. Peel away the burnt outside, get rid of stem and seeds, and slice up.

Slice onions to desired size. Throw in a heated pan with oil and let them start to brown a bit before moving them around. Cook them about 20-30 minutes, or until appropriately caramelized.

For the wasabi ketchup, just mix wasabi, ketchup, and soy sauce.

Heat your pan (cast iron if possible) and some oil on medium-high. When the pan is heated, shape your patties from the ground beef and season with salt and pepper. Don't handle the meat too much, just give it shape. Wet hands help.

Put your delicious meat on the pan. 4-5 minutes on one side, without touching or moving it. Don't press down on it and squeeze all the juices out or you're Killer is Dead to me. Flip it over and let cook 4-5 minutes on the other side. Take off the pan and let sit for 5 minutes.
