A-Kon '08: Guinness videogame cosplay record demolished... probably photo

Sister site Japanator recently ran the story that Project A-Kon, America's oldest anime convention, set out to break the Guinness Book of World Records record for the "Most Video Game Costumes in One Place." We knew it wouldn't be a problem, as the previous record was set by 80 British Marios. But we showed up anyway to cover the Dallas, Texas event.

While final totals aren't in yet, I think it's pretty safe to say that A-Kon 19 demolished the previous record. The forms and entries are still being tallied by officials, but it is estimated that over 600 cosplayers contributed to this new record.

When we arrived at the designated meeting place for these record breakers, queues of cosplayers were already so backed up that even the elevators had lines. Three judges, including Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, were present to oversee the procession of videogame-costumed attendees.

The convention did not expect this big of a turnout. It was only a matter of time before fire marshalls were called in, as the meeting ballroom was well past capacity. Even then, more continued to file in. Eventually, the whole thing was moved to another room.

Check out the gallery below to see how it all went down, as well as several other cosplay pictures from A-Kon 19. The costumes ranged from incredibly sexy to terribly horrible. We were going to categorize them, but we'll let you be the judge. There are plenty of gems in the mix.

Special thanks goes out to Japanator's photograher, Chris Serani, for his outstanding work. For those interested in the rest of A-Kon 19, be sure to check out Japanator's coverage, which includes a super sexy Naruto and crotch shots!

Hit the jump for our scavenger hunt list!

Look for:

  1. stealth water sprinkler attack
  2. the most incredible sculpt of an obscure game character ever
  3. Malice, as in Man-Alice
  4. Yours truly, showing off his print work
  5. Japanator's own Desutoid
  6. FFIV SFC
  7. Man breast sweat

I bet they also broke the record for "Most people who haven't showered in over a week in one place."

@Aerox
when you have that much going on and all that fun to be had, who has time so do unimportant things like shower? (I say that with all the sarcasm in the world)

I want to get a bunch of people and dress up like the jocks in Revenge of the Nerds, and drive by in a school bus chanting, "NERDS NERDS NERDS"
That would make me happy.

I always make fun of cosplayers, but there has to be something said for people comfortable enough to dress in some ridiculous outfits. The people that do it right look freaking amazing.

One of my friends dressed as Ike from Smash. It was a well make costume, but he did wear girl's pants.

That Altair costume was right about on par with the one Ubisoft had parading around last year at events.

Bloody hell, i was looking at the group pic with toon link in the center and thought the dude/chick near the top right (next to some blue ears) was totally naked. Turns out it's a combination of naked back and the arm of the person in front.

Creepy.

Manfred Von Karma, Psycho Mantis and Laharl cosplays were very good. The Laharl cosplayer even got the hair right. O_O

But the most disgusting picture has to be of the RE4 Weapons Seller. He's got nothing to sell except sweat! :OP

Damn, that dude went all out on the sword as Nightmare from Soul Calibur. It's just too bad that he had to spray paint a catcher's chest protector for the armor. lol

Also, thank you for starting my day off right with some sideboob. It's part of a complete breakfast.

Chicken, the Ronald McDonald was actually pretty fail. Not only did he give a half ass ran ran ruu, but the second time we saw and asked him, he used the excuse that "not enough people know about it" for him to want to do it.

Heh. Snake in a box. I'd lift it up and give him a high-five. He should've teamed up with Companion Cube. That would've been epic. XD

I'll have to agree about the Resident Evil 4 merchant. Instead of concealed weapons for purchase, BO takes its places. Ew.

Otherwise, there's some pretty good costumes amongst the rest that are kinda 'meh' or just outright bad.
