A Grand Theft Auto movie almost happened photo

A Grand Theft Auto flick might have happened had Ron Howard not inadvertently put the brakes on the budding project.

Speaking to Game Culture, writer and director of "Gamer," Mark Neveldine, talked up his involvement with a Grand Theft Auto movie, saying he was set to script it and put in a marathon session to get familiar. But a rights collision with Ron Howard's 1977 flick "Grand Theft Auto," and plot disagreement brought it to a halt.

"There is a rights issue," he said. It was a movie originally directed by Ron Howard. And because Rockstar games made a videogame, there is some battle of who can use the title.

"You can't make it about the game," he added. "It got to be a headache and we said we would rather not get involved in it. I think someone ended up writing some version of it to re-make the movie, but that isn't our interest, ours was bringing a videogame to life."

Aw, nuts -- we were this close, guys.

They should just call the movie GTA: Vice City or GTA: Liberty City or something like that.

Thank god. What a piece of crap that would have been.

Like Metal Gear Solid and countless other games, this is the sort of thing that doesn't need a movie. GTA is one of those games that borderlines on movie fan tribute anyway. What saves it from being a series of movie rip-offs is its cheeky social commentary and the fact that its a video game.

But make a movie of it and you end up misrepresenting those other two facets. You'd just have a Scarface tribute after that. Well except that in this case Tony Montana actually wins.

Yup. I remember this. I do believe it was based off of Vice City. Did people seriously not know about this?

In my opinion there is already a Grand Theft Auto movie, 'Heat' by Michael Mann.

A lot of the fun of GTA is that it is a big mashup of crime movie cliche's. I think making that back into a movie would result in something pretty unimpressive, kind of like trying to glue a bunch vomit together to make a hamburger. There isn't anything in GTA thats not already in tons of movies already, and "bringing a videogame to life" only works when it is a game that is significantly apart from elements that have already been exhausted by film(Tron).

I'm glad this didn't happen. Games should never be made into movies. They always suck.

I find this paradox hilarious. Games made into movies suck, but movies made into games suck just as bad.

Protip: keep games far far away from movies. Also, keep movies far far away from games.
