A glut of gridiron goodies: Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition photo

Here’s a bit of history for you folks: John Madden has had his name on EA-developed football games since the Reagan era. The first was John Madden Football, which came out for the C64 and Apple II on June 1, 1988 (it was also later released for the Genesis). The most recent was Madden NFL 08, which was released on August 14, 2007. Now, EA has come full-circle: they’ll be putting out a 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Madden NFL 09. And why not? Premium-priced special editions have become all the rage these days.

The Collector’s Edition will be available alongside the no-frills version of Madden NFL 09; both will launch on the same day, August 12th. But for your $89.99, you’ll actually be getting two full games: the Collector’s Edition will include full versions of Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09, in addition to “exclusive classic Madden NFL gameplay, and an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content”.

There’s some rather curious phrasing in the press release that caught my eye (see for yourself after the jump). Towards the end, it says the following:

NFL Head Coach 09 is scheduled to ship only as a part of the Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition, which, at a suggested retail price of $89.99 for the complete package of Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09 plus additional exclusive bonus content, will ship on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION®3.

So if I’m interpreting that correctly, you won’t be able to buy NFL Head Coach 09 by itself? That seemed a bit strange — until I realized that it’s genius on EA’s part. Think about it: NFL Head Coach 09 isn’t likely to sell all that well by itself, especially when you consider the first effort on the PS2, NFL Head Coach. But bundling it with the Collector’s Edition ensures that the total package will easily sell a few hundred thousand copies. Will you be picking it up?

EA ANNOUNCES MADDEN NFL 09 OFFICIAL SHIP DATE AND SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., - March 27, 2008 - Electronic Arts Inc. Whether you prefer to make your moves on the field, from the sidelines or in the front office, the Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition has something for every football fan. Madden NFL 09 will feature the most immersive gameplay, the richest online offerings and the most comprehensive feature depth in the history of the franchise, while NFL Head Coach 09 has been reinvented to provide a unique new NFL experience by allowing fans to be in total control of their favorite franchises. "Both Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09 are deep and unique gaming experiences that will truly immerse sports fans of all ages, skill levels and playing styles," says Chris Erb, EA SPORTS director of marketing. NFL Head Coach 09 provides the complete NFL coaching experience, offering a variety of different ways to control an NFL franchise, on and off the field, in-season and off-season. Madden NFL 09 will be available for the Xbox 360 video game system from Microsoft, PlayStation®2 and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment systems, Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP (PlayStation®Portable) handheld entertainment system and is rated RP by the ESRB. Ick, no thank you. I liked the game better when the football experience was unrealistic. Now they try their best to make it as close to football and the game still doesn't play like it.

Yeah, how about taking the time to develop a playable version that doesn't make me want to hurl babies into The Pit from MK.

So I get to pay 20 more bucks for a game that should be just a feature on Madden anyway? Nice!

I've never bought a Madden game in my life, and NFL2K5 is still doing it for me

but if they do something revolutionary with this (which they probably won't) then I might get it (which I probably won't)

I'm hopeful though.

The only thing that really sounds interesting is being able to write up my own playbooks, & actually using them in Madden. BUT, it's not worth an extra $30.
I'm hoping for a 2K9. I bought 2K8 for $10, & it pretty much plays the same as 2K5. I think the gameplay for Madden needs to be completely re-done for me to be interested again, let alone dropping $60 each year. I'm actually more into playing it on the Wii.

I haven't purchased a Madden title in about 5 years, but I sure miss the '92 Genesis version. The injuries, ambulances, and the fun....God I miss Madden being fun.

Ohh, and I miss the blood, and fun, in NHL '93 as well. God I loved those games!

I'll be passing. If they were smart, they'd throw in a few of the earlier versions of Madden for retro's sake.

Im sure you'll be able to pick up copies of Head Coach by themselves about 10 minutes after the release of the collectors edition.

If thats what floats your boat.

Unless they do something with this franchise to peak my interest, doubt it, I'll be passing for yet another year. As much as I did love my football games of years past, it has stagnated to the point where I'm not interested at all in it. Thank God I didn't buy it last year for the PS3 and that whole frame rate debacle.

I would have wanted to buy Head Coach 09 by itself.

I might get the whole package though, since I was thinking about getting a Madden this year anyway.

I will not buy another footbal game, Madden hasn't been good for years.

2K5 was still the best football game since the Tecmo football series.

I want fantasy draft dammit. I'm a huge football fan, and thats incredibly important to me, as I want to play with guys on other teams, but I will only use the Jacksonville Jaguars. I bought Madden 00-05 or 06, found out that it didn't have fantasy draft, sold it(but kept the AWESOME hall of fame DVD which had actual clips of Hall Of Fame players(which you can barely get on youtube, etc due to the NFL being Nazis about it) and didnt even bother with the last few. I would like to get this bundle though, as I wanted to try Head Coach but didn't really want to waste money on it alone.
