A fourth Gears of War book is on the way photo

Yes, yes -- I am a fangirl for Gears of War.

I love the games, but above all, I adore the books. Three books in the series are currently on sale, with the third -- Anvil Gate -- hitting our shelves only a few weeks ago on August 31. The books, written by Karen Traviss, are amazing. They take what the game provides in the way of history, characters, and story to a much richer and deeper place.

The fourth book, Gears of War: Coalitions End, is apparently set between the third book, Anvil Gate, and the soon to be released Gears of War 3. No specific details on the story have been released; Gears of War: Coalitions End is due for release on March 1st, 2011.

I may or may not have read the third book twice already.

Talking Gears of War, I played the Gears of Quantum Theory demo off of the PSN recently.

Wow, how shit can a game be?

Despite me being the Sony fanboy yall know and love, I do enjoy a little bit of Gears of War, well, I like to blast through the co-op campaign with a buddy of mine.

Books, nah i only read screens.

If it features ham-fisted dialogue like GoW2 (No! Not Again! I've lost her again! *tantrum), count me out. Is it a writer different from the game series?

@timtheterrible.

I believe they have the author of the novels writing the story this round. Karen Whatsherface (damn my memory)
If the novels are anything to go by it will have a more personal feel with less GIANT WORM!!!!!

That's good to hear. I actually found the story/ universe of the first game very interesting in that they seemed to compliment what was going on with the gameplay very well. The second one just seemed like the new writer was trying WAAAY too hard in focusing on the one big plot twist when, speaking for myself anyway, by the time the it arrived I felt little to no emotional attachment to either of the characters that it happened to.

Honestly, when I heard Karen was involved with writing the third game I was so happy, she has done something amazing with these books.

Are they mature books? I don't mean like classic literature but are the themes mature? I read an alien book as a kid and it had a sex scene in it and I was like OMG!

@Nero

I would say they are mature. They certainly don't just focus on headshots and breasts.

The novels shed a lot more light on the characters and their motivations. If you are a fan of the games and like the worry they are well worth a read.

Not mature from the sex stand point but it does have ALOT of military and fighting scenes, something which Karen is known for doing very, VERY well.

Did I just see Hollie Bennett's profile at the top of 3 stories in a row, or am I just so in love with her that I'm seeing her face everywhere???
Ah well....

I haven't read a book that came to life out of a video game universe in years. I can't shake the feeling that I'll start reading it, and it will seem so detatched from the world and characters developed in the game that I'll just hate it. I wouldn't want to read a book that did a poor job of representing the kind of awesome story created in a game like Gears.

The 3rd book was, IMO, her best Gears book to date. But, then again, it had a lot of focus on Baird. :D I would have read it a a2nd time myself, but I loaned it out. Can't wait to see what KT does with Gears 3.

Oh, is this the same author that does the Star Wars books? (I heard her name on a Podcast recently.)

@ LittleBigD

That's perfectly acceptable because Hollie is HAWT! I had a dream that Hollie caught me playing MAG naked after a fictional NARP in a Sweeny Todd type olde London.

Only downer was that Anthony Burch was there too.

Muderously Hot!!!! I can't say I've ever had a dream where she has walked in on me playing MAG in the nude, but I wish I had that kind of imagination.

*sigh* You might have sold me on reading these now. The only video game tie-in book I've read is the first Mass Effect novel, which surprised me with how enjoyable it was. I love Gears, but reading tie-in novels seems like a slippery slope and I already have enough geeky interests/obsessions. Just glad I have a girlfriend... :-P

@Nero: Yes. All those themes and ideas that been lingering in the back of the games come full force in the novels.

Honestly, it still bugs me why developers put their mythos and depth to tie-in novels only. It makes them look lazy when they know or know people that can make their games be more then toys.

The books are fantastic reading, Karen Traviss is an excellent writer.

And yes, more Baird is definitely warranted.

Baird rocks. He's smart enough to be cynical but has enough character to do the right thing (most of the time). Him and Cole are cool foils for one another.
