A few more details about Bravely Default: Flying Fairy photo

As painfully silly as its name may be, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy was one of my personal 3DS highlights to come out of Tokyo Game Show. On top of looking gorgeous, it's also experimenting with augmented reality. Speaking with Square Enix's Tomoya Asano, Inside Games was able to learn a little more about the game.

  • No-pants girl is just one of the story's four main characters
  • Gameplay is turn-based with random encounters; both jobs and abilities come into play
  • Apparently there is a light (the "flying fairy") above your character
  • The sound staff are "interesting people" who have not previously worked with Square Enix

Perhaps if I keep typing out Bravely Default, the name won't sound so alien. Worked for Bionic Commando and a number of other NES titles.

As it should be, it's obvious this game is meant for those who gave up on Final Fantasy post-IX.

The words "Bravely Default" make no sense, but I like the way they sound together and I think it's a cool name for a JRPG. I don't get why people keep moaning about it.

I don't know, this game doesn't really sound all that interesting to me. I think I've got a bad taste in my mouth from the original Persona and not enjoying Persona 2 so much, so maybe I'm just not in an RPG mood lately.

turn based and random encounters seem to hold games back for me. Even golden sun i loved the first time around but i can't stand random battles and with turn based combat. The turn based combat in golden sun isn't actually bad, but why do rpg's rely on combat for progression and dont have very good combat? The entire genre seems sick to me.

turn base is my favorite rpg battle variety and I like random encounters more than seeing them on the battle field if the encounter rate is right. I like being suprised.

I liked everything about golden sun 1-3

They said they have some guest composer who is a famous musician. They're not going to reveal who it is until 2012.

I think the one thing that lets me down about this game is its being posed as a new IP but it looks so much like your standard FF game that if they had called it FF(insert roman numeral) no one would question it being a FF game.

Where as something like DragonQuest is a great example of a game from the same company with a unique art style that no one would mistake for anything other than DragonQuest.

@Scuffles.

This art style has more in relation to chrono trigger and 4 heroes of light than any FF.

I agree with you stealth for once. Turn-based rpgs are the fucking bomb! Love being able to just chill out and relax while playing them, compared to always having to be alert and having to give my full attention.

Basically this is the sequel to Final Fantasy : The Four Heroes of Light aka one of the best games on the original DS. So yeah, I'm excited for this.

I'm not a big fan of random encounters, when down poorly they can become really frustrating. This game seems to be doing everything right so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Lets just call it BDFF for short. This is the first game which has made me interested in buying a 3DS...and not because of the 3D...i hate 3d.

I do love me some good turn based random encounter rpg's too.

A turn-based RPG with random encounters?

Some people may think that sucks... I think that's the best news I've heard in YEARS for the genre. Seriously, since when have random battles with turn-based combat hurt RPGs like Final Fantasy 7, Skies of Arcadia, Pokemon White & Black, Lost Odyssey, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Dragon Quest IX, or so many other timeless RPGs?

This is what I WANT and I was worried turn-based battles with random encounters were going to disappear. This is beyond great news to hear.

The fact that the game is a by the roots RPG is the best news possible. All the people demanding retarded enemies roaming around some map walking in circles because they think that's "progess" instead of the idea that you can be RANDOMLY ATTACKED by wolves and monsters and stuff in the wild that you wouldn't see coming can go to hell.

Let it rock.

I seriously don't understand all this turn based hate. There's a market for both real time and turn based games, and the turn based crowd (including me) has had a rough time as of late thanks to Final Fantasy turning into a huge black hole of suck.

@stealth The art style is way more Final Fantasy Tactics and FF3 and 4 DS than Chrono Trigger (which was more Dragon Quest).

And 4 Heroes of Light *is* a FF game.

Its nothing like tactics, Its not pure sprites, and its not like ff 3 or 4, 3d models

Its a combo of the chrono trigger backgrounds and 4 warriors of light.

And yes 4 warriors of light is an ff gaiden but this isnt
