About a month ago, Nintendo announced the Nintendo Short Cuts Showcase competition. Nintendo wanted their fans to create a 5 minute film based around the Nintendo universe. The top 3 winners will have their films premiered at the New York Rockefeller Center next week during the summer film showcase. Among the prizes of various Nintendo products, the first place winner will receive a Wii, DS, and trip to New York. Oh, and $10,000.
After scrounging around the Internets for the last few hours, I've come up with a collection of the best entries to the competition. The best of the bunch (and the one I think is going to win the ten grand) is the first video above simply called Punch-Out!! Trailer. The quality and production value of it is quite remarkable.
Do you agree with me that the Punch-Out video is going to win? Or do you think one of the other videos in the bunch will win the top prize?
The Pitch. A company is trying to combat the ever growing threat of Nintendo by coming up with some unique videogame ideas.
Nintendo News Network. All the big news from around the Nintendo universe. The bit at the end with the winning lottery numbers was hiliarious.
The Blue-Light Zone: Eye of the Mii-Holder. It's like that episode of the Twighlight Zone.
Nintendo Love. The chronicle of a man and a Nintendo as they go through life, love, marriage, birth and heartbreak.
Pretendo. Mario and Link have to save Princess Peach. Some funny moments. Also, hot chicks.
Wii-Napped! A kid has his Wii stolen and the Elite Beat Agents come to help.
Jack Thompson goes on a killing spree! Apparantly, it was banned for being too violent.
Crazy Nintendo fanboy shows off his Nintendo collection. Hey, if you can't come up with a witty movie idea, then showing off your crazy collection works just as fine I suppose.
Return of the Champ. Sure, the other Punch-Out video is way better, but the music on this is amazing.
Super Smash Brothers Medley. Making up lyrics to Smash Bros songs? Total win. Not to mention the real life Smash battle that takes place.
Nintendo Gamebusters. It's like Ghostbusters. IS THAT DESCRIPTIVE ENOUGH?!
I Am Error. Nintendo invades real life. (Is the Mother Brain theme from Super Metroid just one of the best boss songs ever or what?) Made by Matthew from The Tanooki.
[Thanks to pierrerodriguez, Geoff, Irving, Tristan, Snaileb, Matthew, and especially Jon for all of the tips!]
The Punch Out trailer is a shoe-in to win. It's just so well made. Sadly however, I bet it loses due to some bullshit and something undeserving gets the top prize. I watched the Jack Thompson one the other day, and it might be barred from the contest, but it wins my heart.
I wish the EBA one wasn't such a piece of crap, since it would be great if one was done right. Also the Smash one was pretty solid, and decent use of Nintendo music, unlike the crap from most other ones.
Yeah, Punch Out's been my winner since the weekend. You can't fail with that soundtrack, but it's just so incredibly well made on top of that that it has to win.
The Nintendo News one also gets big bonus points for the news scroll at the bottom. 'Christmas Kid: "Nintendo 64!!!"'
The Punch Out Trailer, though well made, is too long to be seriously considered a trailer. It could have been a much more solid entry if they treated it like a real trailer instead of a pseudo short film.
The little German trainer guy is hilarious!! "C'mon Mic! The Uppercut! THE UPPERCUT!!" Dunno if thats from another game, but the line is an instant classic in my mind!
I would hope that the Nintendo and Tribeca judges don't allow things like production values get in the way of judging. As entertaining as the Punch-Out!! trailer is, there's more videos out there that haven't been selected by Destructoid here that are equally as imaginative or more-so. Seeing something like Punch-Out!! win would somewhat be disheartening to all of us who put something together, but don't nearly have the resources to make something as technically impressive; the juggernaut would win in a three week long contest aimed at amateurs who probably don't yet have green screens or film crews or a legion of actors at their disposal.
I suggest anyone interested in production check out the videos at digitaljuice.com. Aside from advertising their stuff they have some decent informational vids in their djtv section.
Thanks for the props on the Jack Thompson video. I knew it was going to get banned when i submitted it. The rules state no excessive violence but if it wins your hearts thats all that matters!
