Games Radar has a video of a presentation from Activision showing off the new, improved  controllers for the upcoming Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. We knew about the new look and some other features (like the removable face plates), but this video uncovers a couple more surprises Activision had in store.

There are some control and performance improvements to fret buttons, and the strum bar is now longer and easier to strum. It also looks like triggering "star power" will be a bit easier, as they have replaced the original's "roll-able" switch with an accelerometer, much like what is in the Wii's Remote.

Improvements have also been made to the controller's portability. The neck of the guitar can be removed from the body, which makes moving and storage easier. They also hint at "future possiblities" that have something to do with this feature.

Lastly, I've never heard a company down their original product more. While pitching the new controllers, this Activision rep said that the old controllers looked like "Fisher-Price toys," and called the previously included stickers "cheap" looking.

Oh, and the presenter used the word "sexy" one too many times. Creepy.

[Thanks, Justin]

Is it me or does that guitar controller look really really small.

It's shit compared to the Rock Band guitar. This thing still fucking clicks. Rock band strum doesn't click, and has a rod on the end to really make it easier to use. The frets are obviously superior on the Rock Band controller too, it's got 10 after all (seriously though, I've used it, it's way fucking better with the flush frets).

I just hope the Rock Band one works with GH III fine.

Wow. This guy is a horrible public speaker. It was painful to watch that and find out how crappy the new GH controller will be (too damn small!). And those were some low blows to the Red Octane near the beginning of the vid. Anything to try and turn people away from RO (unsuccessfully), I guess.

That controller did look insanely small o.O; I just hope it feels like the SD controller and not the xplorer. The explorer edge made it shitty to play on, cuz you had to strum over the edge and the strum bar was so small. Not to mention the whammy bar kept drooping down instead of staying in place so when you wanted to whammy you had to pull it up. I really hope the guitar is good, because the xplorer really just made the 360 version horrible for me.

I swear I was promised a bigger, heavier guitar. That thing looks like it's going to break and crush under my medium physique. And it probably will since you can snap the neck off with ease now.

My original plan was to get one Rock Band Guitar and one Guitar Hero III guitar. But after seeing this...ick.

I wish they'd move away from this Gibson only mantra they have for their guitars. As a guitar player I'd like a little more variety. Both in game and controller-wise.

I could care less for the brand of guitar, as long as it is playable and comfortable to play. Like I said, the Xplorer was a horrible design, it completely sucked ass. Fret wise, strum wise, overall shape wise. This one looks promising. I have high hopes for it. I'd use the SD controller I have now if I could, that thing is fucking perfect.

So did he say the 360 version will be bundled with wireless? Or not... I can't sit through that again to find out.

That IS Red Octane. It's Harmonix that is making Rock Band separately. RO is criticizing their own work, which is perfectly fine.

Or is that Neversoft? Did they say in it that he was from RedOctane?

If they can integrate the Wii-mote that well, and use Microsoft’s proprietary 2.4 GHz RF wireless technology, it just doesn’t make any sense to have those ugly-ass USB dongles for the PS3. Otherwise, though, it looks like the new guitars will be much better than the old ones, but since I’m really leaning toward picking up Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, so I’ll just use this for the bass on the latter game (I’m pretty sure that this guitar will work with Rock Band, but I’m not sure if the Rock Band strat will work with Guitar Hero III). Can anyone verify that?

Is it just me, or is Red Octane/Neversoft taking a lot of shots at Harmonix and Rock Band? Not only did they insult them here, but in another interview they said that people were stupid for buying full albums, because no one wants to hear songs from just one band. (Am I the only one who thinks that's a bit ridiculous? I have no problem listening to an album from start to finish.)

@falinter: "Or is that Neversoft? Did they say in it that he was from RedOctane?"

They made a couple references to the work they did, so I'm inferring that it's Red Octane. If it was Neversoft, they would have based their comments on an admittance from Red Octane about their earlier work, as Red Octane is still making the controllers for Guitar Hero III.

@tricoden: "Is it just me, or is Red Octane/Neversoft taking a lot of shots at Harmonix and Rock Band? Not only did they insult them here"

They ONLY commented on the make of the earlier guitars, which Red Octane made themselves.
