Summer is here (for folks in temperate regions anyway), and even in the far future of the 25th century, that's time to party. At least, that's the kind of future Star Trek Online will be debuting, with the free-to-p...

Review: Star Trek: The Video Game photo
Review: Star Trek: The Video Game
by Ian Bonds

As a life-long Star Trek fan, I was skeptical about the reboot. However, my worries were unfounded as the 2009 film quickly became one of my favorites in the series, and it's attention to what came before while paving a new pathway for these familiar characters was a welcome change.

When I learned that before the sequel was to hit theaters there was to be a movie tie-in, my skepticism returned. Licensed games tend to not fare well and are often rush jobs made to quickly cash-in on the franchise's new film, but the promise of two-player co-op got me excited for the game.

I should have realized that this was truly a "kobayashi maru": a no-win scenario.

Riptide and Star Trek co-op problems related to Steam

You've just picked up a game to play with your mates, and you're appropriately excited. Maybe it's Dead Island: Riptide, and you're preparing to slaughter a million zombies all in the name of good fun, or perhaps you're getti...

New releases: Don't Starve will be the end of you photo
New releases: Don't Starve will be the end of you
by Fraser Brown

I'm a bit late with this week's new releases, as I'm still recovering from my wee sister's wedding, where I wracked up an ungodly bar bill. Your sympathy and donations will be greatly appreciated.

It's a busy week, and I had a hard time deciding which upcoming title made me tingle the most. In the end, however, it's got to be Don't Starve. I've been playing the beta for months, and it's stolen my heart (and sanity). I've turned pig-men into slaves, built towns only for them to be destroyed by hellish monsters, and been driven to the brink of insanity by hunger and fear. I love it.

Also launching this week is StarDrive, a rather lovely 4X space strategy game, the beta of which has already swallowed up a good chunk of my time; zombies continue to be a menace to people living in paradise in Dead Island: Riptide; Star Trek is boldly going where lots of Star Trek games have gone before by not looking like it's very good; Monaco has chums performing heists together, which I can totally get behind; and Dragon's Dogma gets some DLC/ a re-release in the form of Dark Arisen.

Splashing out on anything this week?

Star Trek on PC is broken as f*ck! photo
Star Trek on PC is broken as f*ck!
by Jim Sterling

The latest Star Trek release has its fair share of problems -- chief among them being that it's kind of boring -- but PC users are in for an altogether more shocking problem. The online co-op, arguably the entire point of the game, simply does not work.

Our own Rick Foom was unable to play the game last night, despite having bought it specifically for our Dtoid.tv live stream. He is one of many customers who obtained the game and found it useless for the one thing it was designed for. You had one job, Star Trek! You blew it.

As you can see in our Super Best Guide for the game, going into a lobby wastes a few seconds of your time before it fails. This has been the story for many customers unfortunate enough to drop $60 on this game -- a game that's now been broken for three days.

GDC: Digital Extremes' Star Trek isn't looking too hot photo
GDC: Digital Extremes' Star Trek isn't looking too hot
by Abel Girmay

Take a beloved franchise like Star Trek, influences from the heavier hitters in a genre, and you can't go too wrong, right? Well that final verdict of course remains to be seen, but I can't say Digital Extremes' Star Trek makes a good case for itself.
