Alien: Isolation is more than just you and a Xenomorph photo
Alien: Isolation is more than just you and a Xenomorph
by Brett Makedonski

At the reveal event for Alien: Isolation, we were shown a lengthy demo that got right to the heart of the conflict at-hand: Amanda Ripley trying to navigate a space station as a very aggressive Xenomorph hunted her. In our first look at the game, those were the only two entities present. We were told at the time that there'd be some human survivors, but the developers were fairly tight-lipped as to what their roles would be.

Now that we've had a second chance at Alien: Isolation with a new build developed specifically for a pre-E3 event, the picture's significantly clearer as to how these interactions will go. This demo, which was about as long as the first one we saw, did more to highlight what some of the game's shortcomings might be. That said, it also reinforced our initial impression that Isolation is poised to be a tense, heart-pounding affair.

Sonic Boom on 3DS seems like a pleasantly surprising platformer photo
Sonic Boom on 3DS seems like a pleasantly surprising platformer
by Brett Makedonski

Just last week, Sega announced that the two upcoming Nintendo-exclusive Sonic games were given subtitles. The Wii U title is now Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and the 3DS version is Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. Despite sharing the Boom moniker, these two games are headed in opposite directions.

While I'm not sure that Lyric shows a ton of promise, Shattered Crystal certainly does. The handheld platformer draws from some of the most beloved Sonic games of all-time, while injecting inspiration from the best parts of Lyric to keep gameplay varied.

By and large, Shattered Crystal looks to be a 2D-platformer that's paced similarly to the original Sonic The Hedgehog. That is to say, it doesn't play as fast as the series would eventually ramp it up to. But, what it lacks in speed, it makes up for in other areas.

I wanna be all alone with Alien: Isolation and more with Sega's E3 2014 offerings

Once your heart's broken, what do you do? I only want some pieces of you, Sega. And I won't be making it out to E3 to check out your lineup. There are a few games coming down the pipeline over at Sega that I'm more than a lit...

Sonic Boom plays pretty much exactly as I expected photo
Sonic Boom plays pretty much exactly as I expected
by Brett Makedonski

[Update: Apparently, just this morning, Sega decided to subtitle both Sonic Boom for Wii U and the upcoming Sonic 3DS game. Sonic Boom on Wii U is now Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and the 3DS title is Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. This preview only looks at Rise of Lyric.]

Heading into a recent play session with Sega's Sonic Boom, I was filled with odd, conflicting senses of hesitation and anticipation. Would this be an all-out trainwreck that I had to cringe my way through? If I set my internal bar low enough, would I be strangely surprised? Heaven forbid, might it actually be good?

The Sonic name has sat in an uncomfortable place for years now --  past failures in the franchise simultaneously meriting both more lenient expectations and a more critical eye to future installments. Sonic Boom looks to be no exception. Its faults stick out like poorly bandaged sore thumbs, but some of them are sort of acceptable because it's Sonic. Sort of.

The demo that we were shown was broken up into a few different sections that could be selected. There was a level from the campaign, a boss fight against Doctor Eggman, and a fast-paced, on-rails level to zoom through. They all played very differently from one another, and gave good indication as to what Sonic Boom's strengths and weakness truly are.

Dumb Idiot Ideas: Sonic Boom's Sticks vs Mario Kart's Mercedes

Gateway drug: Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies photo
Gateway drug: Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies
by Dale North

Standalone multiplayer release for Company of Heroes 2, The Western Front Armies, can serve as a gateway, bringing players over to the full Company of Heroes 2 experience. Its pricing is low enough ($12.99 for one army, or $19.99 for both) that even the curious can jump in and try their hand at WWII strategy from either the U.S. or German Oberkommando West viewpoints.

I know that Company of Heroes 2 is a great game, but I haven't given it the time its worth. But sitting down to play a bit of The Western Front Armies for our first hands-on report turned into an hour-long session that I had to break myself away from. Well, actually, the game did that for me.
