What if VHS-style tip guides still existed?

There was something about the VHS days that brought out the goofiest tips and promotional videos from game makers. Especially Nintendo. The most memorable one that comes to mind is their Star Fox SNES promo that had Sony and...

Review: Yoshi's New Island photo
Review: Yoshi's New Island
by Chris Carter

The original Yoshi's Island is one of my favorite Mario games of all time. I don't know if it's the numerous and remarkably unique boss battles or the whimsical charm of throwing strategically bounced eggs, but it really resonated with me. I've gone back to it time and time again, and the DS remake was great for when I was on the go in its own way.

Yoshi's New Island for the 3DS seeks to bring back those good times, and the good news is Yoshi fans will mostly enjoy it. The bad news is it's not all that special.

Meet Yoshi's New Island, same as the old island

Do you know what's fun? Making Yoshi noises. Come on. Do it. The tongue grab. The flutter jump. The ground pound. Such an animated dinosaur. Hamza and Dale are really good at making Yoshi noises.

Yoshi's New Island is also fun.

This old Chinese instrument was made for Mario music

The instrument you're about to hear is called a sheng. This weird looking Chinese cluster of bamboo flutes has an unexpected sound, and in this video it's used for an unexpected purpose: to play the Super Mario Bros. music. ...

This lowest-score run of Super Mario Bros. is impressive

It may not be a flawless run, but YouTube user NotEntirelySure's playthrough of Super Mario Bros. is a riot all the same. He cleared the game with the lowest possible score, 500 points, without the aid of save states or slow...

Ken and Ryu make out: Videogames turned romance novels

In Valentine's Day spirit Shutterstock tasked an artist with turning some of its stock photos into mock up paintings for videogame romance novels, full of Austen-tatious fonts and a creepy Princess Peach. I'm not sure why, but I guess it's a novel idea. The Duck Hunt one was out of left field, too. Power Couples : Classic Video Games Reimagined as Romance Novels [Shutterstock]

This week, Nintendo updated their Club Nintendo digital offerings to add Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Although it's technically been a part of the Wii Virtual Console since 2008, many people wanted to know how it held up, and if it really was worth of the hype it's gotten from fans.

There's no two ways about it -- it's absolutely worth it. Legend of the Seven Stars is one of the most entertaining and innovative role-playing games ever made.

Why Mario leaves Yoshi outside of Bowser's castle

Have a little levity to end your week from the gang at Dorkly, as they depict a scenario in which Yoshi takes offense at being left outside of Bowser's castle by Mario.  This is why I like cats. You'd never have this co...

'Edge-hogging' mechanics of new Smash Bros. are different

In both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl, there's a popular mechanic commonly referred to as "edge-hogging." Since only one character can be on an edge at a time, when a character is knocked off of the stage, their oppo...

The Year of Luigi 2013: A Retrospective photo
The Year of Luigi 2013: A Retrospective
by Chris Carter

In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, Nintendo has been running a fun promotion throughout 2013: the Year of Luigi. The goal is simple -- to celebrate the part of the Mario duo that is often described as "The Lesser Brother," and to honor his contribution to Nintendo history.

The concept is largely supported by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who constantly delivered Luigi-centric news throughout the year and had some fond things to say about him. To make things even more interesting, Iwata officially extended the Year of Luigi into 2014 on December 18th, 2013. Let us remember this, our first year of Luigi.

Very Quick Tips: Dr. Luigi
by Chris Carter

Dr. Luigi is out today, and it not only signals the end of 2013, but the end of the first Year of Luigi as well. While most of it is pretty straightforward for Dr. Mario fans (the game even has a classic Dr. Mario mode), there are some new concepts that might make things a bit tricky.

Here are a few basic tips to help you get started.
