Our top ten games of gamescom 2013

gamescom is a huge show for both the press and consumers alike. It's at least four times the size of E3, and you'll be breathless by the time you've explored every inch of the show floor. There's just so much to see and do!

We've been bringing you non-stop coverage of gamescom from Cologne, Germany all week long. After checking out everything we could, we've picked our top ten games of gamescom 2013:

No particular order here, just ten exceptional games we were super impressed with. Of course there were a ton of great games, and it's always hard to narrow down games like this. Check out all our coverage from gamescom 2013 to see what else we liked.

Rare's kicking around ideas for its classic properties

It doesn't seem to matter what Rare is working on these days. (For the record, currently, it's Kinect Sports Rivals.) If it's not one of the studio's beloved properties, there's going to be pushback from fans who have been wa...

David Cage will put you to sleep

Jetlag can be a total bitch, especially when traveling overseas. Combine that with having to hear David Cage talk and it's totally understandable that the head of Sony's Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, would fall asleep during a panel. Sweet dreams, Mr. Yoshida. [Via NeoGAF]

Battlefield 4's 'Levolution' is such a horrible buzzword

Levolution. It sounds like someone with a lisp trying to say revolution. Well anyway, that's the marketing buzzword Electronic Arts is pushing like crazy, and while the name is stupid the tech behind it looks cool. The newes...

Destiny looks so goddamn gorgeous

I still have a hard time believing Destiny is actually possible given the scope of the entire project. You're going to have multiple worlds to explore, so many guns to play with, tons of enemies to kill, and it all looks gor...

Resogun is a blast, lets you throw humans photo
Resogun is a blast, lets you throw humans
by Dale North

Housemarque's latest, announced at this week's PlayStation press conference at gamescom, is PS4 title Resogun. Any fan of Super Stardust HD or Super Stardust Delta would be glad to hear that this game is a spiritual successor, though it adds some new ideas and some next-gen shine to the formula.

It's a shooter at heart, reminding of Defender, though it's not as space-y as you're fending off alien invaders in an attempt to save the last humans. Resogun plays cylindrically, with free back-and-forth movement. It's fast, but it's not so fast that you're overwhelmed. The left analog stick controls movement while the right one fires either forward or back. And aside from a few buttons for special attacks, that's all you really need to know to jump in and have fun.

gamescom: Forbidden Hotline Miami 2 interview questions

Between appointments I popped in to play Hotline Miami 2 again. And it's still awesome. After finishing (losing) I turned around to find a list of forbidden interview questions written on the wall behind me. The banned questi...

Murasaki Baby is strange and wonderful photo
Murasaki Baby is strange and wonderful
by Dale North

PlayStation Vita title Murasaki Baby looked to be pretty dark and twisted in its debut trailer at Sony's gamescom press conference earlier this week. Now that I've played it, I'd say that it isn't quite as dark as it first came off to be. There's actually a cute side to it.

Kind of.

The cuteness starts with the premise: the player uses the Vita's touchscreen to hold the hand of a baby carrying a balloon. You're to guide her on her journey to bring this balloon to her mother, as she is lost. This baby is kind of cute in an upside down head with huge eyes kind of way. Scary cute, if you will.

EVE Valkyrie was the best thing I saw at gamescom photo
EVE Valkyrie was the best thing I saw at gamescom
by Dale North

I saw a prototype of what was to be EVE Valkyrie at E3 this year. Along with Respawn's Titanfall, it was the talk of the show. CCP knew they had something special, so they created a full game from this demo.

Here at gamescom, CCP are showing a build so new that they just wrapped it up five days ago. Work started on what was to be Valkyrie in Reykjavik, but now they've moved to Newcastle, where a studio of 20 are working on it full time.

While exciting, what I saw at E3 was still rough around the edges, and running on standard definition Oculus Rift headsets. They've been working on it ever since, talking the experience and turning it up as far as they could. It's now running on Rift HD prototype sets, packed full of improvements.

Will you get DriveClub for free? Or on Blu-ray?

I love the fashion in Lightning Returns: FF XIII

So I really like fashion. It's not to the extent that I can tell what label you're wearing. In fact I don't care about that aspect of fashion. I just care about what looks good. And Lightning looks so good in all of her outf...
