I ran into Jonathan Holmes on the PAX Prime 2013 show floor and not a minute later he had me trying out the 2DS with Jim Sterling hugging me dearly. Attempting to play a game and talk coherently with a camera watching your every move is a challenge on its own, but this was a new experience for me. And no, we don't have an HR department.
The system's shoulder buttons aside, there wasn't much to complain about -- especially at the lower, $129.99 price point. Nintendo is targeting a younger demographic with the 2DS and I think the device will serve them well. You may just end up liking it, too.
Jonathan and Tony were able to play some Aban Hawkins & the 1001 Spikes at PAX Prime 2013, including testing out guest characters in the new cooperative mode. The original release on Xbox 360 was tremendously fun in that familiar masochistic way, and based on how this video went, I'm utterly convinced co-op will be the way to go.
There's fun to be had, even in death. Nicalis' Tyrone Rodriguez was there to tell us about the new characters -- there are going to be more than a dozen in the final version, with varying abilities -- and offer a bit of moral support. Eventually, they brought Tyrone (and PlayStation's Shane Bettenhausen) on to show us all how 1001 Spikes is done. Dibs on Nyx of NyxQuest fame, is all I can say. Or maybe President Thompson -- I adore Tempura of the Dead.
The game's coming to Wii U, 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and PS4, so no excuses. We need to play this.

I feel comfortable going out on a limb to venture that PixelJunk Inc. will be the best game about intergalactic soup empires for a long while. I'd have felt fine with that declaration before my hands-on time with the game at PAX Prime 2013 -- the basis is a bit out there, after all. After being given a demo, I'd like to further suggest that PixelJunk Inc. will be a damn fine game regardless of its premise.
PixelJunk Inc. is the next installment in a long line of PixelJunk titles, but it's poised to be the best of the franchise. It's completely centered around the manufacturing and exportation of soup, but it's so much deeper than that. It'd be impossible to shoehorn Inc. into a particular genre of games, because it has serious elements of sandbox, real-time strategy, and tower defense.
At the beginning of the game, the objective is simple: make some soup. To do this, you might need to start building different facilities to streamline the process. As you gather more materials, it becomes simultaneously easier and more difficult. The operation has expanded, and you're now expected to manage the robot crew that's carrying out your tasks. You probably need to do some of the legwork on your own too.
We came, we sang, we conquered. Our PAX Prime 2013 karaoke party was a huge success, and easily one of the best parties we've ever thrown at a PAX. We're going to do it up even bigger for future PAXs. Until then, here's a couple of videos to see what you missed.

It was getting late in our PAX Prime 2013 journey when Hamza and Jim recorded their thoughts on the new Platinum Games title, as you can probably tell, which is why their attempts to talk about the game resulted in strange words being uttered. The subject matter of Bayonetta 2 certainly wasn't making their job any easier.
So, I'm a jerk for having not played The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to completion. That much became clear after my hands-on time with the upcoming HD re-release for Wii U at PAX Prime 2013. The lines may have been ridiculous, but much of that insanity was due to the sweet t-shirts Nintendo was giving out, I'm pretty sure.
While this seems like an obvious buy for me, our Wind Waker veteran Spencer wasn't so sure. In addition to the visual polish, there are tweaks to Hero Mode, your sailing speed, the Triforce shards, and other appreciated but not exactly substantial additions -- a tougher sell for someone who has played through the original GameCube release many times.
We both agree that there are other titles in the Zelda franchise we would've preferred get the HD treatment before Wind Waker, which still holds up quite well to this day and can be emulated and further prettied up on PC if you're into such things.
Hamza and resident Killzone fanatic Jim played a bit of Killzone: Shadow Fallmultiplayer at PAX Prime 2013. This is one of those series that represents a huge gap in my gaming library and, considering this will be a launch title, I can see it being a starting point for some of you who are in a similar place and intend to pick up a PlayStation 4 in November.
Good on Guerrilla for its plans to put out free post-release DLC maps. That's swell.
