The quick-time event to end all others

This feel-good moment of the day is brought to you by Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, which features one of the best QTEs I've had the pleasure of seeing. Spider-Man arguably still holds the top spot, but this is some damn fine interactive entertainment. If only all of life's problems could be fixed with a raise of the fist. This Is It. This Is The Greatest QTE. [GameSetWatch]

Review: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon photo
Review: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
by Maurice Tan

The combat flight sim genre is in a pretty good state these days. While PC owners can enjoy the IL-2 Sturmovik games for that excellent full sim experience, console owners have still seen a slow but steady flow of arcade air combat games in recent years.

Yet most games of the arcade console variety -- Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation included -- tend to focus on just locking onto enemy targets at range and letting loose a volley of missiles. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has been said to attempt to Call of Duty-fy the genre in order to revitalize it, which has left a fair share of fans with giant question marks floating around their heads.

Whether this form of change to the genre was needed or not, Assault Horizon does breathe some new life into the genre with fuel fumes that can set your brain on fire.

Here's some screens for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

A new batch of screenshots for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon recently came out and, as you might expect, they contain some jet planes that you can expect to take for a spin yourself. They are not just any jet planes though, as ...

TGS: I'm not sold on Ace Combat: Assault Horizon photo
TGS: I'm not sold on Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Namco Bandai invited us out to their offices in Japan to see the Tokyo Game Show line-up before the show opens today. There was a lot to see, so we didn't have too much time with all the titles, which sucks since I really want to play Ace Combat: Assault Horizon again. Not because I enjoyed it, but because I have no idea what happened in my hands-on. We were dropped into the newly revealed Capitol Conquest mode where it was basically a domination-like multiplayer gametype. The eight-player battle saw us attacking the opposing team while attempting to take over points and gain stronger weapons.

After each death, we were able to get different jets or helicopters before jumping back into the match. The airships' controls were pretty standard, and you have a new control feature that assists in dog fights when needed. My problem with the game was that the action was too fast-paced. I've played past Ace Combat titles before and never could get fully into them because of how slow they were.

So you would think I'd enjoy Assault Horizon. Nope. The action was so fast and so hectic that I really don't even know how to feel about what I played. I want to give the new Ace Combat another whirl as I'm not happy that my first hands-on experience was so jarring. Plus, I want to check out the standard deathmatch and co-op focused missions before completely writing this one off.

Some more screens for Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble have come out of the Nintendo 3DS Conference 2011. They involve planes, a radar, a weapon loadout, some Japanese text here and there, and yep, that looks like an Ace Combat gam...

Impressions: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon photo
Impressions: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
by Maurice Tan

The new Ace Combat is not titled Ace Combat 7 for good reason; it's a big departure from the previous games in the franchise. Perhaps because the audience for these kind of games has dwindled on the consoles, Project Aces has adapted its formula to fit a more shooter-oriented audience with Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.

The new cinematic Close Range Assault system gives dogfights a more visceral feel, but don't we play these games to shoot four AMRAAMs at long range followed by a couple of AIM-9X missiles when we've closed the distance to enemy planes?

As part of Namco Bandai's gamescom showings, a helicopter gunner section and a new multiplayer mode were elaborated upon. After seeing it, I honestly don't know how to feel about this new title.

Ace Combat 3D is lookin' pretty 3D

At least, I'll have to take Nintendo and Namco Bandai's word for it, given that the screenshots they've released for their upcoming 3DS jet fighter game are not in 3D. That said, there's a lot of stuff flying at your fac...

E3: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon takes my breath away

When it comes to arcade combat flight sim console action with an over-the-top dramatic story, it doesn't get much better than the Ace Combat series. Sure, it's no IL-2 Sturmovik but it's not supposed to be. Ace Combat: Assaul...

E3: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon turns men into girls

Namco Bandai's Level Up event over, here's what to expect photo
Namco Bandai's Level Up event over, here's what to expect
by Hollie Bennett

Well I have returned from Dubai and Namco Bandai's Level Up event and what an event it was; we saw some exciting news, some welcome news and some stuff that was just a bit odd. While I no longer have my privet villa, my butler, wild parties and unlimited drinks I can still say that there is plenty of exciting stuff to come your way throughout the week. You can see my interviews for the shock announcement of Tekken Blood Vengeance and I try to get as much information about Soul Calibur V as humanly possible. I also talk gravity with Inversion, we chat about the all new take on Ridge Racer, discuss the new Ace Combat game and of course I ask just how hard Dark Souls is going to be.

For those who miss out we have a nice round up of all the news that dropped, you can check out the gallery below or go to the Flickr for some amazing photos and the above video to show off the opulence of the event.

A big thanks to Daniel Carneiro, a Dtoid member and my amazing cameraman for all of his work.
