Microsoft cuts price of Xbox Live down to $40

[Update: it appears as if the promotion is temporary through Microsoft.com, as expected.] Microsoft is continuing its aggressive "let's undercut Sony" scheme, following up its Xbox One console price cuts. One year of Xbox Liv...

March's Games with Gold are some of the best games photo
March's Games with Gold are some of the best games
by Brett Makedonski

In the recent past, Xbox Live's Games with Gold program has had mostly the same cadence every month: a standout title, an indie game, and a bit of filler. March breaks that mold with three superb games from 2013.

March's Xbox One title is Rayman Legends, which just happened to be my game of the year in 2013. Seriously, it's amazing. When informed of the selection, Destructoid editor Jordan Devore couldn't control his outbursts, exclaiming "So dang good!" and "Those games are masterful."

Legacy console Xbox 360's titles aren't slouches either. Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider kicks off the first half of March, and BioShock Infinite holds down the back-end. All three games here are certainly worth downloading and playing.

And, as an added bonus, Microsoft has announced that April will double down on Games with Gold. That means two games on Xbox One, and four on Xbox 360. Microsoft claims that this is to celebrate the program crossing 100 million game downloads across its lifetime. Whatever the reasoning, Xbox Live subscribers will certainly welcome the freebies.

Xbox has another Ultimate Game Sale up its sleeve

There's a tiny niche audience of consumers that love both buying things and doing it at a discount. Seriously, just the smallest sliver on a Venn diagram. Still, Microsoft's doing its best to cater to that sub-section with an...

February's Xbox One Games with Gold is already out photo
February's Xbox One Games with Gold is already out
by Brett Makedonski

February's the shortest month of the year, but Xbox is artificially lengthening it by spilling it over into January. That's the only way to explain this month's Xbox One Games with Gold already popping up for free on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

#IDARB is available and free right now on Xbox One for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. It was supposed to go up on February 1, but you can have it more than two days early.

Why did #IDARB go up so soon? My best guess is that Xbox Live's servers just couldn't contain its wild, insane party ways. Try it out; you'll see what I mean. If not, we'll have a live look for you soon if all goes according to plan.

Brothers and #IDARB headline February's Games with Gold photo
Brothers and #IDARB headline February's Games with Gold
by Brett Makedonski

February's a tricky proposition if you're the procrastinating type when it comes to gobbling up your free videogames. A meager 28 days means that you need to get in gear and download the new Xbox Live Games with Gold early. No depending on a 31st to bail your lazy ass out.

Xbox has unveiled next month's Games with Gold, and they're mostly what we've come to expect -- a really good game, an indie title we don't know much about, and some filler. They are Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons, #IDARB, and Sniper Elite V2.

Brothers is the clear standout here, which can be downloaded from February 1-15. I gave it an excellent score a few years ago and managed to still be on the low end of most outlets. I've also got your back if you need help cleaning up the Achievements.

#IDARB is the lone Xbox One game. It's supposed to be zany and fun. Guess you'll have to find out for yourself. Then, there's Sniper Elite V2 bringing up the second half of the month on Xbox 360. By then, you'll probably just be looking forward to March's games.

Xbox Live Gold free month rolling out for Master Chief Collection owners

As an apology for some of the issues with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Microsoft announced that it was gifting players a free month of Xbox Live. That free month is happening right now, and a message should be in yo...

The next generation of Xbox Live avatars may be upon us

Miis were introduced in 2006, but Microsoft cleverly got on the bandwagon in 2008 with Xbox Live avatars. Although they weren't as cute, they were far more customizable -- and of course more profitable as the publisher sold t...

Go download your free D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die and MX vs. ATV Alive photo
Go download your free D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die and MX vs. ATV Alive
by Jordan Devore

I'm downloading Swery's Dark Dreams Don't Die right now. You should do the same, assuming you have an Xbox One and an Xbox Live Gold membership. The quirky adventure game is free throughout January as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold program. Queue her up!

On the Xbox 360 front, MX vs. ATV Alive is available for free now through January 15, followed by The Witcher 2 from January 16 through the end of the month. I'd consider grabbing the former out of curiosity but I don't have the hard drive space to spare. Blasted thing.

Xbox Live deals: Game of Thrones, Revengeance, Rock Band Blitz

I never know quite which deals to highlight: do I talk up mostly newer games that haven't been on sale time and time again, or do I stand my ground by highlighting old favorites that most (but not all!) of us already own? Hmm...

Tough but fun roguelike FPS Tower of Guns coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox One

Tower of Guns was in a recent Humble Indie Bundle, which means I played a little of it but didn't stick around quiiite long enough for it to take hold of me. It's good, though! Hard, too. The roguelike first-person shooter o...

I don't know WTF #IDARB is but I want it

I've heard that title before, #IDARB. I know it's coming to Xbox One. But other than that, I'm clueless. Brett came into chat today wondering about it, and Nic said the game looked "amazingly silly" on Giant Bomb months ago....

There are a ton of games on sale for Xbox Live's deals of the week

Gold subscribers can play Sunset Overdrive for free tomorrow
by Jordan Devore

So here's a cool thing: Microsoft and Insomniac are opening up Sunset Overdrive for Xbox Live Gold subscribers for 24 hours. The punk-rock shooter will be free to play -- the whole game, including co-op -- from 12:01am Eastern tomorrow to 12:01am Eastern on Sunday, November 23.

Should you decide to buy Sunset after the trial ends, you can pick up where you left off. Also, Achievements can be earned during this extended demo if you're still into earning those.

Great offer and I hope there are more to come.
