It's not all shooting in Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of those games that sort of just exists. While there are neat aspects to the game -- I'm a sucker for alternate realities and mechs, to be clear -- it's hard not to be largely uninterested e...

Wolfenstein: The New Order is as middling as I feared photo
Wolfenstein: The New Order is as middling as I feared
by Abel Girmay

Wolfenstein: The New Order is a videogame that has guns in it, and you use these guns to kill people. That's about as remarkable a statement as I could rack my brain for after spending three hours with game.

As much as some Wolfenstein fans may want to greet The New Order with fanfare and anticipation, I have to say folks, there just doesn't seem anything noteworthy to this newest title. With the exception of a few moments, Wolfenstein: The New Order feels like a phoned-in, by the numbers first-person shooter.

DOOM 4 beta, Yokai Watch & Final Fantasy on PC photo
DOOM 4 beta, Yokai Watch & Final Fantasy on PC
by Max Scoville

Hey everybody, I’m back from Japan! And here’s your quasi-timely news update for the first two thirds of this week. Irrational Games closed, pre-ordering Wolfenstein: The New Order gets you a beta for the new and technically unannounced DOOM game. Square Enix has trademarked “Shinra Company,” there’s a possibility of new Final Fantasy games on PC in the future, and in the meantime, Final Fantasies VII, VIII, and XIV are currently on sale.

Level 5 is getting me all hot and bothered by teasing a western release of Yokai Watch, which is selling like adorable ghostcakes in Japan. PC and PS4 owners will get Zombie Studios’ Daylight in April, and next month sees the release of Towerfall Ascension, the expanded version of the former Ouya exclusive.

Pre-order Wolfenstein, get access to the next Doom game photo
Pre-order Wolfenstein, get access to the next Doom game
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

You'll get to shoot Nazi faces off in Wolfenstein: The New Order starting on May 20, 2014 in North America, and May 23, 2014 in Europe.

Typically release date confirmations would be a story on its own, but Bethesda has sweetened the pot here as pre-ordering the new shooter will also get you access into the beta for Doom 4. Note that Bethesda is referring to it as the "next Doom game" instead of as Doom 4. A reboot, perhaps? The Wolfenstein site has a little more info regarding the beta.

Along with that the release date and the next Doom game beta is this new trailer that starts off with a bang. Literally, look at those President heads explode. Bethesda sure knows how to make killer trailers.

Wolfenstein: The New Order has the greatest moral choice

While Wolfenstein: The New Order didn't do much for me back at E3, the levels shown during MachineGames' PAX Prime 2013 build felt right. This game isn't going to revolutionize the genre, but it's got snappy gunplay and cree...

Nazis take over the world in this new Wolfenstein trailer photo
Nazis take over the world in this new Wolfenstein trailer
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Wolfenstein is coming back! The latest take on the classic story once again stars BJ, who has woken up from a coma to discover the Nazis won the war, and taken over the planet. Not just Nazis, but bigass Nazi robots too.

We've only seen a teaser and some screens up until now, so it's nice to see a trailer depicting next-gen gameplay. Yes, that's all in-game footage near the end, even the scene with Frau Engel laughing like the crazy psycho that she is. Bravo to the editor for this E3 trailer, as it sent a serious shiver down my spine.

Normally something like this would have also hyped me up, but I've already seen the game in action and while it's going to be a good one, I'm not dying of anticipation for it either. But that's just me.

Wolfenstein: The New Order should be out by the end of this year for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Wolfenstein: The New Order just isn't doing it for me photo
Wolfenstein: The New Order just isn't doing it for me
by Hamza CTZ Aziz

Bethesda is bringing back Wolfenstein, the first-person shooter that lets you kill countless Nazi bastards. The New Order takes place during the 1960s in an alternate history Earth where the Nazis have taken over the entire planet with their highly advance robot fighting force. It all looks hopeless, that is, until William "B.J." Blazkowicz finally awakens from his coma.

I got to see a good chunk of the game at a recent preview showing, and story wise, Wolfenstein has this very campy, almost Quentin Tarantino style going for it. Gameplay wise, well, it's looking like the standard FPS experience that I'm quite frankly just getting tired of.
