"I want a BioShock where we have the OPTION to resolve confrontation without the use of guns," said one gamer to me today.

As I consider his comment, I can't help but think more and more it's like saying you want a Metal Gear game with the OPTION of not fighting ridiculous terrorists and super soldiers, or a Kingdom Hearts game where you can turn all the Disney references off. BioShock, as a series, has always been about violence. Its narrative core is steeped in the stuff, moreso than many other -- potentially more violent -- videogames. 

The idea of violence and BioShock Infinite has come up a lot lately, with many pundits lamenting the need to perform bloody murder in the game -- as if it were some brand new introduction to the series, shocking in its sudden appearance. But why? Why is the violence in Infinite being regarded as a "shame," and why are we demanding a game give us options that run contrary to its central themes? 

Why does BioShock Infinite need to be non-violent? Of course, it doesn't. And I can't help feeling those demanding non-violence are missing the entire point, expecting things from a game that never led anybody to expect them.

A Washington state teen has been charged with murder, the 14-year-old having shot his mother and father in the head after he was grounded from electronic devices. Nathon Brooks may be tried as an adult for the crime, though reports suggest he might be suffering from mental illness of some kind. 

Brooks, for his part, has decided to shift the blame to violent videogames, in what looks like a cynical exploitation of ludicrous stereotypes to avoid accountability. 

"He said he quit playing violent videogames because he thought they were making him more violent," said Moses Lake police Sgt. Mike Williamst. "I asked him how much he played video games, and he told me '24/7,' up until he got his electronics taken away."

Brooks added a voice in his head was telling him to murder his parents, Jonathan and Elizabeth, and he had in fact considered murdering them since the age of eight. You can expect news sources to not focus so much on the "murderous head voice" thing and find the "GTA definitely did it" part far more salacious.

Hotline Miami fan film is full of murder, and kids

You monster.

Outside of the casual and educational spheres, violence abounds in games. Even Mario is violent, albeit not gratuitous. Combative, at least. Much of the game is purely avoiding obstacles, but eventually some form of cartoon, innocuous violence will be necessary for progression, be it dumping turtles in lava or tossing a mustachioed bomb on his royal, explosive tuches. And that's fine. Cartoon violence is one of the ways we handle it, render it inert -- unless a childhood full of Loony Tunes, Tom and Jerry, et al did a number on me -- but that idea is complicated in the realm of purportedly "serious" games in which violence is more....violent.

In his Tomb Raider review, Jim mentions how after the first few hours of the game it sets out to make your adversaries seem as abominable as possible, “to make us hate the antagonists.” He also mentions how the viciously skilled Lara and generally fun gameplay “undermines the whole narrative about the impact of taking human life,” which was the concern that came over me when I played through the Tomb Raider’s first three hours late last year. The killing is too good. Now they have to justify it.
