Going all in: Defiance is Syfy and Trion's biggest gamble photo
Going all in: Defiance is Syfy and Trion's biggest gamble

[For a glimpse at Defiance (the game) and its new PvP modes, check out our recent preview and return here for a look at the TV series. Also, MEBTWK]

“Four years ago, both we and Syfy knew we were going to do this, but we were like, ‘How the hell are we going to do this?’”

Rob Hill, senior producer at Trion Worlds, is standing on the terrace of the Park Hyatt hotel in Toronto, Ontario. The sky is overcast and the air is freezing. This was supposed to be Defiance’s big coming out party, but it’s starting to feel like a reminder that winter is coming. That time of year when TV productions in Toronto come to a halt and game designers work more than sleep to make a spring release happen. One can say, Defiance is getting it from both ends.

Depending on who you ask, Defiance is a desperate grasp at keeping science-fiction relevant or a glimpse at the future of the genre. One thing that can’t be argued is that Defiance is the most ambitious project that both Syfy and Trion Worlds have undertaken.

Metal Gear Solid Hollywood film adaptation is a thing photo
Metal Gear Solid Hollywood film adaptation is a thing
by Allistair Pinsof

One of the most cinematic games is finally reaching cinemas through a partnership between Columbia Pictures and Kojima Productions. At the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Japan, series creator Hideo Kojima was joined by Hollywood producer Avi Arad, who has worked on The Amazing Spider-Man and many other recent Marvel films. Now, he'll take his hand at producing a Metal Gear Solid film.

"For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters -- and video games are the comics of today," Arad said. "We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed."

Hideo mentioned Christopher Nolan, Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck among people he would like to cast for the film. For now though, it all seems like a pipe dream with no director or screenwriter attached. The ball is rolling though. Hopefully it's going in the right direction.
