Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops II: Uprising
by Chris Carter

So far in Call of Duty: Black Ops II's lifecycle, we've had one map pack, which wasn't quite the revolution that was promised to augment that expensive $50 Season Pass. But of course, in true Activision fashion, we have three more to go before we call the Pass a wash, and next on the hot plate is Uprising.

I'll cut to the chase: provided you're already a fan, it's one of the best Call of Duty map packs yet.

Did Call of Duty ruin a generation of gamers? photo
Did Call of Duty ruin a generation of gamers?
by Jim Sterling

Tripwire Interactive president John Gibson is disappointed in this generation of gamers, and the Red Orchestra developer lays the blame at the feet of Call of Duty. According to Gibson, who focus tested some hardcore CoD fans, Activision's shooter series has ruined their brains.

"I'm really discouraged by the current state of multiplayer shooters," he complained to PC Gamer. "I think that, and I hate to mention names, because it sounds like 'I'm just jealous of their success,' but I’m really, I feel like Call of Duty has almost ruined a generation of FPS players. I know that’s a bold statement, but I won’t just throw stones without backing it up.

"When I was developing Action Mode [for RO2], I got a group of people that I know that are pretty hardcore Call of Duty players. And my goal was to create something that was accessible enough for them to enjoy the game -- not turn it into Call of Duty, but try to make something that I thought was casual enough but with the Red Orchestra gameplay style that they would enjoy. And we iterated on it a lot. And just listening to all the niggling, pedantic things that they would complain about, that made them not want to play the game, I just thought, 'I give up. Call of Duty has ruined this whole generation of gamers.'"

So Gibson tried to make Red Orchestra 2 appeal to CoD fans in particular, then got frustrated when those CoD fans wanted things from CoD in it? What? Huh? That ... doesn't make sense.

Microtransactions coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops II photo
Microtransactions coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops II
by Jim Sterling

If you were worried fee-to-pay microtransactions were going to become the norm ... prepare to be justified. Activision has announced it'll be jumping aboard the bandwagon tomorrow, introducing incremental buy-me-ups for Call of Duty: Black Ops II

The publisher promises its "Micro Items" won't affect gameplay and, in fairness, this appears to be true for the most part. Here are the three things players will be able to purchase as of tomorrow:

  • Personalization Pack: Each pack as a unique weapon camo, three targeting reticles, custom calling card. $2.00/160 MS Points.
  • Extra Slots Pack: 10 extra Create-a-Class loadout slots, plus room for 20 more emblems, 32 films, and 40 screenshots. $2.00/160 MS Points.
  • Flags of the World Calling Card Pack: National flag themed calling cards. $1.00/80 MS Points.

The "Micro Items" will be coming to the Xbox 360, with a release on other systems unconfirmed.
