The ecstacy of Smooth McGroove's VG a cappellas

I've tried my very best to avoid sharing too much of Smooth McGroove's kickass a cappella arrangements. Not because I think he's lost his Midas touch, but because I didn't want to be held responsible for making heads explode...

Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams photo
Chiptunes = WTFLOL!? Non-chip covers of chip jams
by Tony Ponce

[Update: The album is live! Hit up the Bandcamp page to get your free jams!]

If you are a big chiptune nut, you've probably heard me make mention of "Chiptunes = WIN," a chip appreciation group that has released three free collections of original chiptune music over the past year: the original Chiptunes = WIN, ChipWIN Expansion Pack, and chipWINter. Many artists were assembled to make these projects a reality, and fearless ChipWIN leader Brandon Hood couldn't be more pleased with the reception. I mean, it's literally hours of awesome bleeps and bloops. Who wouldn't be excited by this stuff?

The next little treat in the pipeline is Chiptunes = WTFLOL, a six-track EP set to be released after the listening party on 8bitX's "8 Bit Power Hour," starting right now at 8:00 PM EST which is now over. In a wild twist, this album does not feature any chiptunes. Rather, six popular videogame music arrangers have selected six tracks from the past three ChipWIN releases to cover in their own signature styles.

The arrangers include Final Fantasy cover band The World Is Square, The OneUps' Tim Yarbrough, Jameson Sutton, VikingGuitar, Metroid Metal's Stemage, and post-rock Zelda album performer Cory Johnson. Nice spread there, no? Go cop it at the link below!

A Regular Show game is happening! Yeah-yuh! photo
A Regular Show game is happening! Yeah-yuh!
by Tony Ponce

In what may very well be the greatest news of 2013 thus far, D3Publisher has announced a partnership with Cartoon Network to publish games based on the greatest television program about a pair of retro-gaming slackers who still live like it's the 80s. D3 most recently handled the distribution of the WayForward-developed Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!, and all parties are hoping that some of that same magic will carry over to Cartoon Network's other prime time giant.

I've been waiting for this announcement ever since I was fortunate enough to interview series creator J.G. Quintel almost exactly one year ago. Regular Show is a vehicle for J.G. to incorporate all his favorite old-school pastimes, from cheesy 80s action movies to SEGA Master System gaming. A videogame -- and I don't mean those quick-and-dirty Flash games that flood the CN site -- in the spirit of his childhood favorites is the next logical frontier.

J.G. told me that if there ever was a Regular Show game, he would love for it to be either a classic brawler or a funky rougelike similar to ToeJam & Earl. Both styles sound like they could offer a wealth of possibilities, so I hope that D3 strongly considers those options when it shops around for a developer.

Castlevania and Zelda get Mega Ran's nerdcore treatment photo
Castlevania and Zelda get Mega Ran's nerdcore treatment
by Tony Ponce

Mega Ran, everyone's favorite Philly rapper not named Will Smith, started a new project earlier this year called Time and Space. On the second Tuesday of each month, he will release a short EP of hip hop arrangements that sample music from games fans have specifically requested. Someone asks for Gitaroo Man? Gosh darnit, they're gonna get a Gitaroo Man song!

Though the full albums complete with instrumental bonuses cost a few bucks, Ran has been gracious enough to provide Dtoid with site-exclusive versions for free. First there was January's release led by the Battletoads pause beat, then there was last month's set featuring the rarely covered Beyond Good & Evil. Now we bring you Time and Space: Mach's Principle, which spreads the Castlevania love and invites A Link to the Past to join in the festivities as well.

As usual, you can download this album (along with many other Dtoid-exclusive releases) from our SoundCloud page. And if you want Ran to cover a game of your choosing, drop him a line at megaranfans@gmail.com or a modest donation on his FundRazr.

More free fan-requested VG raps by Mega Ran photo
More free fan-requested VG raps by Mega Ran
by Tony Ponce

Just after MAGFest ended last month, nerdcore rapper Mega Ran unloaded a new EP on the Destructoid doorsteps. A collection of tunes from games like Battletoads and Earthworm Jim with original lyrics added, Time and Space was the first installment of an initiative to release an EP every month in 2013 with material that fans suggested.

Every second Tuesday in the month, a fresh album will appear. But because you guys are so special, you'll be able to download them for free the day before on Dtoid's SoundCloud page. Second on deck is Time and Space: Eternalism, a four-track roundup that sources Super Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia, and Beyond Good & Evil.

If you'd like to suggest a game for Ran to cover next, hit him up at megaranfans@gmail.com. If you want to donate, slide on down to his FundRazr page and fork over a couple of bucks. Bigger donations will obviously hold more weight when it comes time to picking new songs for the following month, but that shouldn't discourage you from making any ol' wild request.

Man, videogame remixer Dj CUTMAN is a showman indeed. Look at that sick armor he wears to his shows! Never seen him perform live? Check out this recording of his MAGFest 11 set -- nothing like being there in the room, but you take what you can get!

How would you like to rock those jams on your mp3 player whenever you want? CUTMAN has just uploaded Game Music Record Label, a best-of compilation of various tracks produced in 2012 and released through his GameChops net label. You can buy a physical version for $10, but just until Sunday, you can download the 20-track album for FREE.

The album contains not just tracks produced by CUTMAN himself but also by other GameChop artists like Ben Briggs, bLiNd, halc, Doni, and Mykah. Additionally, there are cuts from the Zelda project Triforce of Bass, the Halo 4 tribute featuring nerdcore rapper Mega Ran, some love for the Powerglove (It's so bad!), and bless me bagpipes, Gravity Falls again! Truly outrageous!
